Plots on a Platter...And More! I ve been so excited about showing everyone this for a while that I can hardly contain myself! One of my favorite things in this business is the creation of stories...fiction is a love of mine, as is the creation of systems to build fiction effortlessly. I will admit, I m an ideas guy. I see the big picture...and the connection points between the ideas in the big picture. It s a strength I have (in fact, the strengthsfinder test I took in college had my #1 strength as connectedness, the ability to see connections and my #2 strength as communication). This means coming up with ideas and plots and product ideas and promotional ideas is fairly easy. But that s not the case for everyone and that s who this product is intended for. If you struggle to come up with ideas for short stories...or novel length stories for that matter, then this is for you!
Inside, we are going to cover three things: 1. The resources you can use to grab endless ideas, plots, characters, and whole stories if you want! 2. The conversion process - from original source to short story format that you can sell on Kindle, Kobo, Nook, etc. (Some stories won t require hardly ANY conversion) 3. How to spice up these stories to make them especially unique, moving or special to you. (This is optional but recommended) With that said, let s dive in!
Short Story Resources There are 4 primary short story resources that I m going to show you, plus a quick method to finding more resources if you need. (However, I d be super shocked if you these weren t enough!) These resources contain virtually every genre you could think of: Adventure Childrens Crime Horror Fantasy Sci Fi Superhereo Humor Military Drama Non-Fiction Fiction (Fiction based off real life events) Religious Romance
Western Mystery And more Note that ALL these stories are public domain. This means they are completely free to use and publish, even exactly as is (though you will be doing something slightly different - you wouldn t want to publish these in the exact same format). This means you can keep virtually everything the same - names, situations, and plot - without changing anything. What you will ultimately do is add to it and you ll see why in just a second. The conversion process, which I will cover in the next chapter, is super duper easy. It s a simple, step-by-step process. The key to making this work is the ability to describe what you are seeing and I ll cover that as well. So, let s take a look at these three resources. Two of these three resources are comic book resources. Old comics (not Marvel or DC) that their copyright was never renewed.
Some of them were released to the public without any copyright. Regardless, all of the stories from these locations are completely free to steal, from name to characters to plot. All of it. Here they are: Comic Book Plus (Category Section): Fury Comics (Category Section): I ve linked to the category sections to make it easier for you to get to the category you want. The third resource is dedicated to full, written books. Here is the short stories section, listed by most popular: 0 As you can see - there are 88 pages of TWENTY books per page...over seventeen hundred short story books!
Comic Book Plus has over 35,000 books while fury only has 300. However Fury Books has a sister site which is absolute GOLD for authors like us: With over 800 public domain films you can cleanly rip off for your stories, you won t have any problems gathering story ideas. It s What Disney Does Before I go on, you might be scoffing at this. But let me stop you there...ever heard of Disney? Of course you have. Disney built it s mega, money making empire on really old stuff being recycled into new stuff. Walt Disney s very first animated idea, Alice s Wonderland, was based on the 1865 novel, Alice IN Wonderland.
Granted, Walt changed much of it. His Alice was a human in a cartoon world who witnessed the creation of other cartoons. But the idea was definitely from the novel. Since then, Disney has ripped off more ideas from other sources than a raccoon steals food from a neighborhood. Most of these has been 100% legal (forgetting about a few legal and lawsuits they ve been involved in). Anyway The point being, Disney is now a mega money sucking media empire, built on the backs of other people s ideas. You can totally duplicate and you should, especially if you struggle coming up with story ideas. The process to finding a story is easy but I would take my time looking for the one you love the best...because you are going to convert that singular story into a series of short books to sell! Some of these comics (and films) will already be built as a series, which will make it easier on you.
Still though, I would look for books that have compelling plots and interesting situations. Let s take a look at a few now. For this example we will be looking at the crime section of Comic Book Plus. This is Authentic Police Cases #1. Now there is some freaking GOLD here. Page 2 and page 25 contains a pulp fiction story you can cleanly RIP OFF. (And add to, unless you want a super short book) There are several crime stories, but on a quick scan, I *really* liked the first one, about a simple robbery that went bad. We are going to convert that comic into a short story in the next section. One great thing about CBP is the outline below the comic. It shows you what each story is about, with characters and
how many pages it is, along with the specific genre. It s a handy little resource to help you along. So, How Did I Pick That Story? To be honest? I just grabbed one and scanned through the comic to see what I liked. I got tons of ideas just from reading through it. I could ve (and probably should ve) spent more time scanning a few other comic series before deciding on my favorite but for times sake I just pick this. However, I highly recommend you: 1. Select a category you like (perhaps in a genre you read with regularity) 2. Scan through the comic options - there will probably be hundreds. Right click and open a few of them in other tabs. 3. Open a doc file and start making notes on each one. Scan through the comic and see what catches your
eye. Place that in your note. 4. Go through your notes and pick your favorite. My biggest question I ask is How can I freshen this up...update it so it s a new story? I put that in the notes as well. (PS. If you want, the easiest way to see this in action is during the live class, click here to join. Or, if you don t want to join live, you can do the replay here.) Now, let s talk about conversion.
Converting Old Works To New For me, I m always looking at a public domain story from the angle of How can I update this? The plots always work, the time and location is what needs updated. (And some of the dialog. Let s face it, old dialog is old, especially from 1940 s or earlier. It can be a bit cheesy) Here is the process I follow: 1. Scan the story and look for similar situations that might take place here and NOW. OR For fantasy, sci-fi, or other works, look and see what needs updated to make it more palpable to modern readers. (Cheesy language, odd plot points) 2. Define the scenes and look at how I might describe them. Comic books skip this...because you are seeing images of the scenes.
Those need to be described in words. 3. Ask myself if I need to expand the work any, or what major changes might need to be made. 4. From there - it s all about FRACTAL scene writing. Since the plot, the concept, the characters are all written for me, I dive in and write a fractal scene for each major scene in the comic, if they are broken into scenes. If not, then I just outline it. If you haven t seen fractal scene writing, here it is! We will also be covering Fractal Scene Writing in the live class here. The best way to cover this process is by showing a quick example. I ll be using the Authentic Police Case #1 from before, starting on page 3, Crime on the Run. The gist of the story: Master thief Hart goes to rob a payroll clerk on the way from the company he works for to the bank, before he makes his deposit. (This was before electronic credit card/debit cards and such were a thing)
However, one of his sidemen gets a little trigger happy and ends up shooting the clerk, who dies. The problem? This is a pretty wealthy and well liked corporation and the payroll clerk was liked in the company. This spurs the police to crack down on hoodlums in order to find the criminals who did this. They plan a getaway, steal a car, while the car owner notices...gets a nearby cop who grabs the license number. They track it into the woods while the Hart gang ditch the car (it ran out of gas). A shootout happens and the gang is caught. Hart ends up escaping to Washington with his wife, who the rest of the gang ends up giving up and telling his location while pinning the murder on him. They get to Hart, who tries to shoot the cops, only for him to be arrested. A trial happens, Hart gets life, tries to escape prison twice before being put in solitary while the rest of his gang get various lower sentences. Let s turn this into something a bit up to date, shall we?
We can keep the names of the gang the same, the situations similar and the plot, more or less, the same. Here are some notes/plot points I came up with: Hart and Gang. Modernize it Today people struggle financially and the crime story above was sloppy. Let s make it about a young guy with a few friends who are desperate...one of his friends ends up shooting someone during the robbery. This is a smaller town, so the person shot is well loved. The police begin scouring the town for clues, which puts pressure on Hart s friends. They steal a car parked by a warehouse. Camera s catch them stealing the car. Hart escapes to another town where his girlfriend is living. The police find the car speeding on the highway. A chase happens, Hart s friends are caught.
Freaking out, they pin the shooting on Hart and tell the police he s probably with his girlfriend. A swat team raids his girlfriend s apartment, finding the both of them. His girlfriend ends up getting shot in the resulting confrontation. He gets life in prison...however. The story doesn t end there - this is a origin story for a master criminal, Hart, who meets another man in prison, a famous heist master. Fueled by revenge for his friends betrayal and the loss of his girlfriend, this begins a new series where Hart becomes an anti-hero of sorts. There were a lot of ideas I could play with. This story is somewhat a tragedy in the sense that it ends on sad note. But it also sets up a short story series - Hart, the master criminal he will become, ends up escaping prison, takes on a new name, and begins to hunt down those who betrayed him, while at the same time begins playing a bit of robin hood, stealing from mega corporations (the same theme from the comic) and donating swaths of it to charities for homeless.
Other ideas: Faking his own death, dying himself during the story (if I wanted it to be a one off story) and him and his girlfriend becoming a modern Bonnie and Clyde. From here, I would outline the full book in Fractal Scene Writing fashion and clean up the dialogue. This entire process would take no more than 30 to 45 minutes for me, then another hour to write the book. It took me closer to two hours because I was also writing this guide at the same time. I wanted to write this and follow along as I did the other work. Here are the scene plot points: - Scene 1: Desperation (Hart and friends plan the robbery) - Scene 2: The robbery and shooting - Scene 3: Cops announce manhunt. - Scene 4: The freak out and stealing of a car - Scene 5: Car chase
- Scene 6: Arrest and interrogation - Scene 7: Raid on Hart - Scene 8: Jail and Meeting a Master Thief, set up next book I imagine this book would be about 4000 to 5000 words, maybe 10 to 30 pages in total, depending on font size. I would aim for 350 to 500 words per chapter. Let s talk about spicing this up a bit more.
Spicing Up The Story I will admit, I did sort of do this already. You will find that as you go through this process, you naturally want to add details or change things to make them unique to you. However, you can take this a bit further by doing a handful of other things that makes the story super unique. Here are a few ideas: Change the genre. In my example, I could set it in space, in the future. A hacker and gang steal a lot of money, space police crack down, they steal a spaceship, get caught...etc. Set up future stories (I did this by changing the ending) Make major changes to the characters. Hart becomes a young adult/teenager in my example. Add side stories: Romance in a crime story, crime in a romance, side stories for other characters, etc.
Combine comic book stories! There is nothing that says you can t combine stories from different series into one. Obviously, the crime stories will work well with other crime stories...but why not try to pull from other sources outside the genre you picked? We will cover all this in detail in the live class coming up. Be sure to join! The live class will cover: - Fractal Scene Writing - Converting Comic Books Into Short Stories - Spicing Up Stories - Mixing and Matching Stories Better - Generating Unlimited Ideas from a SINGLE Story - Changing Dialogue
