1 Chapter 1 : Essential Golden Age Sub-Mariner Volume 1 (January edition) Open Library Essential Sub-Mariner #1. Essential Sub-MarinerÂ» Essential Sub-Mariner #1 - Essential Sub-Mariner Volume One released by Marvel on September 2, Namor tries to rule Atlantis while fight the surface world and his past. Namor stories always were a bit more interesting because the writers had to find a balance between villain and hero. The book has its weak spots. The Daredevil crossover is odd and it feels like it was included to get the book over pages in length. The villains are probably the biggest one. What works about this book? To start with, there are the characters. Lady Dorma grows throughout the book. He remains utterly unpredictable which makes him fun to read. What I also like about the book is that everything Namor does has an epic nature to it, including his frequent shouts of, "Imperius Rex. The way he fights them is epic and the art really helps here. It has a noble but unpredictable protagonist, some great art, and a great female lead in Lady Dorma. With all that, why was anyone above the age of 10 reading Aquaman rather than this in the s? Marvel fans, antihero fans Recommended to Skjam! The son of Captain Robert McKenzie, an icebreaker commander assigned to the Antarctic area, and Princess Fen of Atlantis, Namor possessed hybrid vigor that made him stronger than any ten humans or Atlanteans, the ability to breathe both water and air, and tiny wings on his ankles that allowed him to fly. Best not to think about that too hard. Despite his mixed heritage, Namor considered himself an Atlantean first and foremost. Namor, the Sub-Mariner, first appeared in Marvel Comics 1 in After the war, superhero comics were on the wane, and Namor stopped being published in, with a brief revival in that did not pan out. Incensed, Namor once again became an enemy to air-breathing humanity, battling the Fantastic Four and the Avengers and accidentally helped bring back Captain America. Eventually, it was discovered that most of the Atlanteans were still alive, if scattered, and Prince Namor brought them together to build a new Atlantis. He also met Lady Dorma, who would be his romantic interest for some years. Which brings us to the volume at hand. Namor decides on a dangerous quest to get proof of his right to rule, assisted at points by senior citizen Vashti who is made vizier in gratitude. Even after regaining the throne, he must deal with crisis after crisis. In, Marvel Comics finally got its own distribution, and it opened up space for the Sub-Mariner to get a full-length book of his own. As a lead-in, there is a plotline in which Namor is banished from Atlantis, and finally decides to pursue the question of just how he came to be an amnesiac derelict for several years. This turns out to have been the work of a powerful villain calling himself Destiny, who also destroyed the first underwater Atlantis. Destiny temporarily defeats Namor, who then spends the first issue of his own title recapping his origin. How my very heart leaps at the sight of its undersea beauty! This is the land I was born to rule, and nothing that lives shall ever rob me of my birthright! Time and again, he leaps to conclusions, or reacts violently to minor slights, which leads to unnecessary battles and mutual distrust with the surface-dwellers. Still, he does not wish to kill unnecessarily, and often goes out of his way to spare or save individuals who may not deserve it. Page 1

2 Chapter 2 : Namor - Wikipedia Ten years after the last issue of the Golden Age's Sub-Mariner Comics, the Avenging Son finally claimed a monthly feature in Tales to Astonish, the entire run of which is presented here! Even though on the cover each book was labeled as "Volume 1", no subsequent volumes were ever published for these trade paperbacks. Marvel did not try trade-paperback versions of the Masterworks again until and Second series â [ edit ] From â, no new Masterworks were published, and existing volumes did not get additional printings. Following this, from to, the Masterworks line was revived, when some of the original 27 went back into print with a new style of dust-jacket designed by Comicraft, and without the chronological numbering on the spine. Like the post remastered hardcovers relaunch, this trade paperback line also had both regular and limited alternate variant covers that used the original marble-look style. This series of trade paperbacks reprinted in order of the original hardback releases from Amazing Spider-Man Vol. It is differentiated from the s Silver Age line by the words "Golden Age" on each title, and with the regular dust-jacket colored gold rather than silver. From Golden Age Captain America: The regular editions of these volumes each have red dustjackets instead of silver. The comics reprinted in these volumes were originally produced during a lull in superhero popularity. More recent volumes have included other genres such as pre-comics Code horror and jungle stories. Marvel started publishing the Atlas Era Masterworks volumes semi-annually, then quarterly before returning to semi-annual. The Namor stories are fun, but standard for the era, though Namor himself frequently comes off as more amoral than other heroes: The backup series, the Angel is much more entertaining than I expected. If you are a snowflake that gets offended by everything you might want to skip this. This was made in a different era by stronger men with thicker skins then exist today. I think this is a great bit of history and look forward to more volumes. Plus, through a continuity implant of recent vintage, he has now been recast as "the first mutant," and indeed the Sub-Mariner prefigures many of the themes of prejudice and marginality explicitly developed later in "The X-Men. There are fabulous goodies in this volume like text stories by Stan Lee a teenager! Plus, there is some early very-underground-style humor strips by Basil Wolverton. This volume is a real shake-up of our sometimes too-settled chronology of comics history. I mean, the dude could not. He messes up hands. His perspective is all off. This is not on purpose. If it were simply framed as outsider art coming out of an asylum, Gustavson might be seen as some crude genius. Now on to the second volume! This book collects Issues of the Golden Age Submariner comic with each comic being 60 pages long. Unlike other books, which were filled with back up features, each issue featured two Submariner stories and one Angel story. The Sub-mariner was an erratic character who would go from being a friend of humanity in one issue to attacking them in the next, to deciding to fight Nazis, and then deciding the whole war thing was kind of stupid. Bill Everett really comes up with a memorable story for Issue 1 as the Nazis attack Atlantis and killing the Emperor later ret-conned to a severe injury that put into a severe coma. The first three issues are packed with Sub-mariner fighting the Nazis with Issue 3 featuring Sub in a great mystery adventure story with Nazis and Irish druids that time forgot. All of them are very well-written and the art is a notch above most golden age stories. Beyond the two stars, there are some interesting text stories including one by a young Stan Lee. Namor has the ability to swim at superhuman speeds, even by Atlantean standards. Namor has greater longevity than a normal human being. He is well over 90 years old as he was born in in the Marvel timeline, but has the appearance of a male in his prime. His identity as a preâ World War II superhero is well-established, making him less subject to the sliding timescale of the Marvel universe. Namor is a natural leader, trained by the royal family of Atlantis as befitting an heir to the throne. He has historically led troops into battle with expert success. His typical interpersonal behavior with both subject and friend borders on the aloof; this is more a sense of regal noblesse oblige rather than snobbishness. Namor was given possession of the Time Gem. It allows time travel, can age and de-age beings, and can be used as a weapon by trapping enemies or entire worlds in unending loops of time. After the Hood attempted to steal the Gems, Namor briefly helped Thor recover the Gem from the bottom of the ocean to prevent the Hood acquiring it, before being entrusted with the Power Gem as the Gems were divided amongst the new Illuminati â Steve Rogers replacing Black Bolt â once again. A number of mutants predate him, including Selene active since at least 10, BC, Apocalypse born in the 30th century BC, Exodus born in the 12th century AD, Wolverine late 19th century AD, Mystique and Destiny dates of birth unknown, but known to have been active at the "Dawn of the 20th century", the demonic mutant Azazel, and a group of mutants known as the Externals.
