1 Harold Blakey Harold Blakey was a long-time member of The Northern Ceramic Society. A serious and generous researcher he will be remembered not only as a ceramic scholar but as someone whose positive outlook and dry sense of humour made him many friends in the ceramic world. Harold and his wife attended their first Northern Ceramic Summer School in 1977 and it wasn t long before they began to share their interests with members of the Society. Published in the NCS Newsletter No.30, 1978, Lakin s drab coloured earthenware and Drab Porcelain was full of new information presented with a degree of caution and modesty that typified Harold s work as he sought to establish sound foundations for ceramic history during the next 30 years. His research into Lakin culminated in a major paper published in The NCS Journal, volume 5, 1984; it remains the standard work of reference on the subject. Although many of his Lakin study pieces remained in his collection throughout his life, it is obvious from this auction catalogue that Harold s interest expanded into many aspects of pottery. He wrote more than 50 articles for the NCS Newsletter; some were short, amusing and quirky like Monkey Business in Newsletter 69 which discussed monkeys in ceramic decoration, other articles tackled more complex issues like the life and work of Ralph Wedgwood. He combined his research and writing with editing the Newsletter from When his work wasparticularly extensive or detailed, he published papers in the NCS Journal. As well as his early work on Thomas Lakin, he wrote about the pottery trade of his native north-east England and introduced us to the Bacchus family of London and Staffordshire. In addition Harold s painstaking examination ofthe Sun Fire Insurance Policiesrevealed a wealth of material about many18th and early 19th century potters which he collated for editions of the Newsletter and Journal. His legacy of publications is a solid core of information about the ceramic industry and it remains a vital resource for all of us interested in British pottery and porcelain. Harold s passion for ceramics carried him to seminars, meetings, and antique fairs for over 40 years. He attended his last fair only days before his death in Although obviously frail, he was still enthusiastic about pottery and eager to meet with fellow collectors. Harold left his collection to The Northern Ceramic Society. A small number of pieces have been donated to museums in his memory, the remainder is sold with the purpose of raising funds to continue the educational mission of The Northern Ceramic Society. Just as the current generation of collectors and scholars is indebted to Harold Blakey for his generosity, so the next generation will also have many reasons to remember him and give him their thanks.
