1 140 CIGARETTE CARD NEWS card, they certainly deserve their place in the general collection. These packs of cards were issued complete with jokers, and these latter could be used to fill in the gaps of an incomplete pack when sending in for the excellent free gifts which were then offered as part of the scheme. (The gifts themselves form no part of these notes, but it may be mentioned that they were very varied and included single packs, of standard-size cards, patience and bezique sets, dominoes, draughts, and even baize-topped card tables, and, time was well spent in collecting these packs.) From the cartophilist's point of view, however, it may not be generally realized that there were many printings of these miniature cards, most of which were of a standard size, although one trade issue was a " midget " pack. The following notes, whilst not claimed to be complete, are thought to contain most of the known issues. The well-known firm of Messrs. W. D. & H. O. Wills are; believed to have been the pioneers in this novel scheme of free gifts, when about March, 1932, their familiar little blue-backed series made their appearance. There were several different printings of these, and after a somewhat extensive study of these cards made at the time of issue, no fewer than six were discovered. These are tabulated below and should be easily identified from these notes: 1. In the first printing, the cards were unnumbered; the figure " 52" in the text (second.line) on the back of the cards was shown in narrow figures. (To be continued.') C. H. B.
