Description: The site consists of the buried remains of a historic city block in Stockton. The block was bisected from the east to the west by the tidal Miner Channel. This waterway was piped underground in the 20th century. The block was settled by at least the 1860s with residential and commercial buildings. By 1895 enterprises on the block included hotels, working-class houses, Chinese-operated laundries, a brewery, and a livery stable. Archaeological testing in 2000 prior to the commercial redevelopment of the block found evidence of buried archaeological deposits dating from the 1860s to the 1930s. *P3b. Resource Attributes: AH4. Features: Archaeological testing of lots along Miner Avenue and Channel, and Hunter streets found intact historic ground surfaces and sheet refuse/ refuse dumps of materials dating from the 1860s to the 1930s. Shoring piles, and retaining walls along the bank of Miner Channel were also uncovered. The historical context for some of these features is shown in a ca photograph of the and 122 Miner Avenue lots, City Center Cinemas Block (see Continuation Sheet, p. 5) *A5. Cultural Constituents: Artifacts representing various activities, food preparation and consumption, food and food storage, furnishings, heating and lighting, commercial laundry activities, health and grooming and social drugs were uncovered dating from ca to 1930s. *A6. Were Specimens Collected? No Yes The collection is curated at the Anthropological Studies Center, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, CA, under accession number *A7. Site Condition: Good Fair Poor: Site had been disturbed by episodes of construction for buildings in the 20th century. *A8. Environmental Setting: The site is an urban city block built approximately two blocks from the Stockton Channel. A11. Historical Information: Two potentially significant deposits of sheet refuse were uncovered. Sheet refuse was uncovered in the rear of Lot 5, Miner Ave. that is thought to have been related to episodes of slough reclamation of Miner Channel, dating from ca ca A very rich concentration of sheet refuse relating to a Chinese laundry was uncovered in the rear of Lot 6, Channel Street, dating from ca s. *A12.
