2 Scouting the Midshipmen Navy Quickly: Navy enter s the game against Johns Hopkins with a 1-0 record on the year after the Midshipmen topped rival Air Force, 10-6, at home on Saturday. The Mids have now won 15 straight season openers, including all five under head coach Rick Sowell. Finishing Strong: Navy trailed Air Force 2-0 at the end of the first quarter and 5-2 at the half, but the Midshipmen closed the game with an 8-1 run over the final 30 minutes to grab the victory. The second-half stats were all Navy as the Mids won 7-of-11 faceoffs, held a 16-5 advantage in shots, corralled 22-of-35 ground balls and forced 12 Air Force turnovers after halftime. Keena, Torain Post Hat Tricks: It was the old and the new leading the way for Navy offensively against Air Force as senior Patrick Keena, who led the Midshipmen in scoring last season (14g, 22a), and freshman Greyson Torain both netted hat tricks in the win. It was Keena s first career hat trick, while Torain reached that mark in his first career game. Defense As Advertised: Navy has long been known for fielding one of the stingiest defensive units in the nation; if the first game is any indication, that will be the case again this season. Navy allowed just the six goals on 18 shots and caused 12 of the Falcons 18 turnovers. Junior longstick middie Matt Rees was the main disruptive force as he had seven ground balls and six caused turnovers in the victory. Navy held 10-of-14 opponents to less than 10 goals last season and ranked 13th in scoring defense (8.57). Dove Stong at the X: The play of junior Brady Dove against Air Force was a key to the victory for Navy. Dove won 12-of-19 faceoffs and grabbed seven ground balls to give Navy a decided advantage in possession - especially during the second-half run. Dove performing at that level shouldn t come as a surprise as he was 147-of-325 (.626) with 78 ground balls last season Schedule/Results Feb. 6 Air Force W/ #5 Johns Hopkins 7 pm Maryland 1 pm 21 Delaware Noon Boston University * 1 pm Mar. Johns Hopkins is (.770) all-time against current Patriot League schools. Below is a breakdown of JHU s record against Patriot League opponents: Army Boston University 0-0 Bucknell 0-0 Colgate 0-0 Holy Cross 0-0 Lafayette 2-0 Lehigh Loyola 47-5 Navy The 700 Club: With 955 all-time victories, Johns Hopkins ranks as the winningest program in college lacrosse history. Johns Hopkins is the only lacrosse program in the nation - men or women - with its own exclusive national television agreement. Brown Returns to Lead Offense: Senior attackman Ryan Brown returns to lead the way offensively for the Blue Jays after enjoying one of the great seasons in school history. Brown scored a school-record 61 goals and added 16 assists for 77 points last season and went on to earn Second Team USILA All-America and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors. Brown will enter his final season with 118 goals and 34 assists for 152 points. A few notes of interest about Ryan Brown: 118 goals rank seventh in school history and are the second most by any Johns Hopkins player in the first three years of a career (Terry Riordan scored 132 from and is JHU s career leader with 184). Will carry a 34-game goal-scoring streak into the 2016 season. The streak is the longest active streak in the nation and the longest by a Johns Hopkins player since Riordan scored in all 56 games in his career from His 152 points are the most by a Johns Hopkins player prior to their senior year since Riordan and Brian Piccola both had 178 entering the 1995 season. He became the first Johns Hopkins freshman to top the 50-point mark since Brian Piccola (61) and Terry Riordan (54) in Cattoni, Crawley Lead Midfield: The Blue Jay midfield will be led by the dynamic tandem of senior Holden Cattoni and junior John Crawley, who finished sixth and fifth, respectively, on the team in scoring last season. Cattoni enters his final season with career totals of 58 goals and 14 assists for 72 points. He tied for third in the nation with 11 extra-man goals last season and counts 19 career extra-man goals to his credit. Crawley finished fifth on the team in scoring last season despite not starting a game. He punched up 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points and has an even 50 career points (33g, 17a) to his credit. In fact, players who accounted for all 38 Blue Jay extraman goals are back, while 23 of the team s 33 assists accumulated on the extra-man are also back. Hopkins converted 38-of-82 (.463) extra-man chances last season to finish 11th in the nation. The 38 extra-man goals the Blue Jays scored last season were the most for Johns Hopkins since 2003 (40). Below is a breakdown of Johns Hopkins returning extra-man scoring from last year: Name Goals Assists Points Ryan Brown Holden Cattoni John Crawley Patrick Fraser Shack Stanwick Returning Totals Moreland, Madarasz Lead Faceoff Unit: Johns Hopkins will rely on as many as four faceoff specialists during the 2016 season with senior Craig Madarasz, juniors Kevin O Toole and Matt Ledwin and sophomore Hunter Moreland all capable of doing the job at the X. Madarasz missed the entire 2015 season with an injury, but was 22-of-42 (.524) with 18 ground balls and one goal in Moreland quickly established himself as one of the top young faceoff specialists in the nation last season as he was 111-of-202 (.550) with 45 ground balls and one assist on the year. O Toole (16-of-34) and Ledwin (2-of-4) saw less time last season, but handled all the faceoff chores in the fall while Madarasz and Moreland worked their way back from injuries and both were impressive. Fields Headlines Defense: Junior Nick Fields, an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten performer last season, is the lone returning starter on defense for the Blue Jays. Fields has played in 33 games with 19 starts over the last two years and counts 24 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers and two goals to his credit. He routinely drew the opposition s top attackman last season and will likely have the same assignment this year. Three For One: The battle for the starting spot in goal is a three-man race heading into the season with senior Will Ryan, sophomore Brock Turnbaugh and freshman Hunter Sells all in the mix to get the starting nod. Ryan is the most experienced of the three as he has played in 10 games with two starts in his career. He got his first career start and posted nine saves in a double overtime win against Penn State last season that jump-started Hopkins seven-game winning streak.
