2 Accessory to NOVAG'S Chess Computers It is assumed that you are fully familiar with your NOV AG Computer before you start reading se instructions, as concerning se computers are not repeated. Chess details The NOV AG CHESS ER is a valuable aid for every chess player to record games automatically. Check List: 1 printer, 1 adaptor, 2 rolls Connecting NOVAG CHESS ER to your NOV AG CHESS COMPUTER The CHESS ER has a connector socket at left hand side which is temporarily closed with a plastic cover. Remove it and slide CHESS ER and your NOV AG CHESS COMPUTER toger. EXCEPTION: For New CONSTELLATION EXPERT a cable is supplied. Please refer to its instruction manual. Now connect adaptor of CHESS ER by inserting plug into socket marked ER... at back panel of chess computer. Insert a roll of rmal printing paper as described below and your CHESS ER is operational. NOTE: If printer is properly connected it will make a sound when main computer is powered on. Warning: Make certain that you insert 2 adaptor plugs into ir designated sockets. Damage caused by operating mistakes are not covered by warranty. Before moving or lifting units, remove CHESS ER from computer

3 ER PAPER REPLACEMENT Use ONLY rmal printing paper - Olivetti specification No or one that is compatible. The CMOS Memory also allows for a complete print-out of all moves during game or after it is finished, by pressing LIST. This is particularly convenient as printer noise may disturb you or you simply forgot to switch it on! Installing paper roll: As CMOS Memory of SAVANT /ROBOT ADVERSARY also stores last 10 moves for each side, CMOS Memory of SUPER SENSOR IV last 8 moves for each side of an interrupted game, you can also get those printed out by pressing LIST, once you switch computer on again. (i) Release paper lever (1) (ii) Trim paper roll to a clean edge (iii) Insert paper edge into slot (2) (iv) Push until paper comes right through top (v) Lock paper lever (1) (vi) Place paper roll in holder (3), and turn till tight OPERATING THE ER The opening positron (NEW GAME) or a board position during game can be printed out by pressing BOARD before you enter your (next) move. It will always print first move with correct move number according to course of game From this opening position you can familiarize yourself with piece symbols as printed by CHESS ER. The white squares are blank, while black squares are indicated by two brackets '

4 The printer can print in two different formats. In short format white and black squares are indicated by two brackets. White and black move is printed on each line under respective headings (s. Fig. 4). For models SUPER SENSOR IV, ROBOT and SUPER CONSTELLATION in long format, each half move is printed in one line toger with symbol of piece moved (s. Fig. 5). In short format promoted/underpromoted piece is printed as follows: '- '-=: "' "', '-!'::"::"!._!-.!._,,1 'Eri" ~:i'::' t.! ii:;4 L: _' oo;uu,c~ UU,UU,S2 The printer will also print following information during course of game: Conventions used in printout WHITE BLACK 00:00:00 0-0, X EP, Q,B,N, or R + STALEMATE 112 DRAW 112 Headings Accumulated time in hrs, mins and sees Castling Kingside or Queenside Capture En passant pawn capture Pawn Check Stalemate Draw promotion/underpromotion draw " ~ Q = Queen B = Bishop N = Knight R = Rook In case you change promoted piece to anor one (with PROMOTED Key or SET-UP Mode), CHESS ER prints re-calculated counter-move automatically, but not your change of promoted piece. If connected to ROBOT ADVERSARY or SA VANT printer will not print a move suggested via HINT and accepted by you. However, it wil be printed if LIST is pressed. To bring paper forward, just pull it aad tear if off, as required. \ Note: The printer is automatically switched off when you go into Trace, Review, Take-Back, Hint, Verify, or Set-Up Mode and will restart printing as soon as you enter a move or call off a move from computer. The printer will also accommodate a change of colour and will print accordingly "

5 PLAYER vs PLAYER Mode of NOVAG CHESS COMPUTER Pressing NEW GAME also terminates PLAYER vs PLA YER Mode. However, in this case CHESS ER does not print out HUMAN vs COMPUTER. NOV AG CHESS COMPUTERS offer 2 human players opportunity to play on computer's chessboard, while computer checks legality of ir moves arid prints game as it progresses. The Adaptor All vital control functions, e.g. verification of positions (VERIFY), move suggestions or display of all legal moves in a board positron (HINT), take-back of moves for each side (TAKE BACK), setting-up of board positions (SET-UP), and CMOS Memory which stores an interrupted game, will be retained. While in PLAYER vs Player Mode computer will also show illegal moves by flashing row and column lights, indicate errors, check, draw/stalemate, checkmate as well as which colour is to move. In order to go into PLAYER vs PLAYER Mode, proceed as follows: 1. Connect CHESS ER to Chess Computer as described before 2. Switch on Chess Computer and press NEW GAME 3. Press BOARD 4. Press GO while printer prints opening position 5. As soon as printer has finished printing opening position, it will print HUMAN vs HUMAN and white can make its opening move on chessboard after which black will make its counter-move. Both players execute ir moves like any ordinary move on Chessboard. Care of NOV AG CHESS ER Dirt or dust can be removed with a soft cloth. Do not use any chemical solvents or water on printer. Any damage caused by ir use in validates warranty. Always keep computer in a dry and cool place (normal room 'temperature). Avoid exposing computer to heat, e.g. spot lights, radiators, sunshine etc. as this may lead to permanent damage caused by overheating, which is not covered by warranty.
