3 Hanukkah Message for 5778 A Winter Dilemma? This year, Hanukkah falls on December 12-20, just a week before Christmas. Perhaps this will make it a bit easier for those Jews who annually complain that it is hard to be Jewish at Christmas time. But I think most of us came to terms a long time ago with our Christmas dilemma. Christmas is a lovely holiday, but we do not feel any special yearning to join in the festivities. When the holiday atmosphere becomes overwhelming, we slip into our role as tourists, visitors to a foreign culture. We wonder: how did the original meaning of Christmas the miraculous birth of the Messiah, saving humanity from the oppressive darkness of sin get submerged by trees, Santa Claus and conspicuous consumption? Do we face the same sort of danger when Hanukkah becomes nothing more than latkes and gifts, without the slightest hint of a spiritual message? Or when the Pesah seder is no longer rooted in the traditional story, and becomes nothing more than a big family meal? When we look at the meaning of our neighbors holiday, most Jews know instinctively that they have to make a choice, and the choice is not hard. The choice is not merely Do I put up a tree? or Do I let my child sit on Santa s lap? The real choice is: which world do I choose to live in? We have chosen to live in a Jewish world meaning, for us, this is not A.D. (anno domini, the year of the Lord). For us, the Messiah has not come. We seek to bring light, one candle at a time, to an unredeemed world. We do not bring an end to the darkness, but soften its effects. 6 Hanukkah Blessings for 5778 Each winter we light the Hanukkiah for eight nights, remembering the miracle of the oil in the ancient Temple and the miracle of the Maccabees victories. Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev (the night of Dec. 12 this year); we light the shamash first, recite the three blessings below, then use the shamash to light one candle on the far right of the Hanukkiah. Each night we add one additional candle, corresponding to the day of Hanukkah. While candles are placed on the right side, they are customarily lit left to right, giving that day s candle the honor of being lit first. After the first night we recite only the first two blessings. The Hanukkah Blessings The first is a blessing over the candles themselves: Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Hanukkah. Praised are You, Adonai, Our God, Sovereign of the universe, who makes us holy through mitzvot and commands us to light the Hanukkah candles. The second blessing expresses thanks for the "miracle" of deliverance: Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu melekh ha-olam, she'asah nissim la'avoteinu ba-yamim ha-hem ba-z'man ha-zeh. Praised are You, Adonai, Our God, Sovereign of the universe, who did wondrous things for our ancestors in former times at this season. The third blessing is chanted only on the first night: Barukh atah Adonai, Elohenu melekh ha'olam, she-heheheyanu, v'kiy'manu, v'higiyanu la-z'man ha-zeh. Praised are You, Adonai, Our God, Sovereign of the universe, who keeps us alive, sustains us, and brought us to this occasion Hanukkah Guide P a g e 6

Some are old favorites and others are new additions, but all are delicious! Books are available for $10 each through the synagogue office, in the Judaica Store or by calling Laura Zoller at Try this Hanukkah favorite: Sufganiyot (Dairy) 2 T dry yeast Pinch of cinnamon 3 ½ T sugar 1 ½ T margarine, softened ¾ C lukewarm milk Strawberry preserves 2 ½ C flour Oil for frying 2 egg yolks Granulated sugar Pinch of salt Dissolve the yeast and 2 T of the sugar in milk. Sift the flour. Place the flour on a board and make a well in the center. Add the yeast mixture, egg yolks, salt, cinnamon and the remaining sugar. Knead well. Add margarine. Knead until the dough is elastic. Cover. Let rise for 2 hours. Sprinkle flour on the board. Roll out the dough thin. Cut into rounds, about 2 inches in diameter. Cover. Let rise for 15 minutes more. In a pot or deep fryer, heat the oil to 375. Drop the doughnuts in the oil, 4-5 at a time, turning when brown. Drain on paper towels. With a tiny spoon, take some preserves and fill the doughnut by inserting the spoon in the top of the doughnut and revolve it inside. Remove it from the same hole. Roll in granulated sugar.
