4 The Commutative Property The word 'commutative' comes from 'commute' or 'move around', so the commutative property refers to being able to move numbers around within number sentences. For example: x gives the answer 1, and if we move the numbers around to make x we still get the answer 1. x = x (Both give the answer ) The Associative Property The associative property says that when we add or multiply numbers it doesn't matter which order we calculate them. For example if I was calculating x x I could approach it in a number of different ways. I could calculate x and get 1 and then multiply that by to get or I could do x and get 0 and then multiply that by to get or finally x to get and the multiply that by to get. Children need to be able to identify the quickest and easiest route to get to the answer. x x = x x = x x The Distributive Property If children find particular times tables difficult, they can distribute the numbers they are calculating. For example, if they don t know that x = they need to be able to understand that they could do x twice to find out what x is. x = = ( x = 1) + ( x = 1) = = This is an extremely useful strategy as children move on to more advanced multiplications. For example if they wanted to calculate 1 x mentally, they could do x = 0 then x = and then add the two answers together 0 + = therefore 1 x = 1 x = = ( x = 0) + ( x = ) = 0 + =
5 Games to support the learning of times tables Snap (this uses one times table at a time) You will need: a pack of playing cards, players Split the pack of cards in half and take half each. Agree on a times table you are going to focus on (e.g. x table) Player 1 turns over the card to reveal a number. Each player has to multiply that number by and shout out the answer as quickly as possible. The fastest player gets to keep that card. The aim is to have the most cards at the end. You must agree on values for the picture cards. For example Jack could be, Queen could be and King could be 0. How to make it easier: slow down the pace of the turning of the cards. Give each player longer to think. How to make it harder: when you turn over a card instead of saying a times table you say a related fact. For example instead of saying x = you say x 0 = 0. Or even a decimal fact such as 0. x =.. Fastest wins (this uses all the times tables) You will need: a pack of playing cards, players Split the pack of cards in half and take half each. Each player turns over a card at the same time to reveal a number. Each player has to multiply those two numbers together and shout out the answer as quickly as possible. 6 Pairs You will need: a piece of paper or card, a pen and some scissors. A game for many players. On a piece of paper write down the times table questions such as x =. On other pieces of paper write down the answers. Turn them all over and mix them up. Player 1 turns over two cards. Do they match? If they do they get to keep them, if they don't then they have to turn them back over. Players continue till all the cards are matched. Bingo You will need: some pieces of paper and a pen. A game for many players. Divide the piece of paper into squares. In each square write the answer to a times table question for a certain times table. The adult then calls out a question, for example what is x? If the child has the answer they can cross it off their board. The aim is to get in a row to win.
