2 A 3-digit number is bigger than a 2-digit number. For example, 39 is bigger than 39. We use any three digits from 0 to 9 to write a 3-digit number. hese digits are written under (undreds), (ens) and (nes) as shown. Remember 3 9 hundred n an abacus, 39 is shown as: Rod reads in hundreds. Rod reads in tens. Rod reads in. 7 PLACE VALUE AND FACE VALUE We know that digits make numbers. For example,, 3 and 7 are digits. ogether they make the number 37. Every digit in a number has a face value and a place value. he face value of a digit is the digit itself. It remains the same at all places in a number. he place value of a digit depends on its face value and its place or position in a number. It changes according to the change in place. For example, 2 is greater than 9 (2 > 9) and 09 is greater than 99 (09 > 99). When the number of digits is the same in any two given numbers, we check their place value first and then the face value to compare them. 5

11 Look at the given examples.. Compare 25 and 200. In 25, the digit in the hundreds place is. In 200, the digit in the hundreds place is 2. Since 2 is greater than (2 > ), 200 is greater than 25 (200 > 25). 2. Compare 57 and 25. he digit in the hundreds is the same in both the numbers. hus, we compare the digits in the tens place. In 57, the digit in the tens place is 5. In 25, the digit in the tens place is 2. Since 5 > 2, 57 > Compare 43 and 49. Since the digits in the hundreds and tens places are the same in both the numbers, compare the digits in the place. Since, 3 < 9, 43 < 49. If the place values and face values of two given numbers are the same, the numbers are equal. For example, 27 is equal to 27 (27 27). 2 Write greater or smaller in the blanks.
