When John Cleese uttered that immortal phrase, you might say it sparked something in the mind of another cheeky Englishman, puzzle creator Terry Randall. A lover of words, Terry wondered if he could connect the uniqueness of palindromes within the framework of a crossword puzzle. Everyone, I give you PALINDROMIA. It s a puzzle whose answers are all -- you guessed it -- palindromes. As Terry says, its appeal may be aptly described as George Carlin meets Monty Python. How s that? PALINDROMIA is a humorous and irreverent puzzle that engages the player in a completely new way. There is, quite simply, nothing else like it. This is a puzzle for crossword fanatics. And whether you read it front to back or back to front, PALIN- DROMIA couldn t be more straightforward: Whimsical. Playful. Challenging. Fun... Nuf. Gnignellahc. Lufyalp. Lacismihw. 3 What is Palindromia? All the solutions in this aptly named crossword puzzle are palindromic (the word Palindrome comes from the Greek word Palindromos, which means running backward). I ve always been fascinated by palindromes. I find them everywhere and I dream them up. When I create a puzzle, I begin with a blank sheet of graph paper, a nice sharp #2 pencil and a kneadable eraser, then I get to work. As each theme puzzle is finished, I hand my sheet of paper over to my colleague, whose computer skills exceed mine a description that fits just about anybody who knows how to turn one on (she s typing this right now as I dictate the words). I think palindromes appeal to our primal need for balance and harmony. In the world of palindromes, unlike the real world, those which are last shall be first, those which are first shall be last, and whatever goes around will definitely come around. But let s not get too serious. It s just a word puzzle, a minor distraction to amuse us on those increasingly rare occasions when we find ourselves with a little bit of extra time on our hands. A little hint to solving Palindromia: Begin by finding mom and dad. They are both in every puzzle, somewhere. Isn t it interesting that the two most important words in the English language are palindromes. Mom and Dad, where would we be without them? 4 Terry Randall Terry Randall is a writer, artist, cartoonist and puzzle creator. His satirical essays and cartoons have been published in various American and European publications. His artwork can be viewed at RedBubble.com, and a book of essays, titled Simple Solutions, has recently been published for Amazon s Kindle. Terry was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he currently lives with his two cats, Sparky and Victorious. As a young child, he moved to England with his family, where he spent his formative years.
