1 COUNT ON US MATHS CLUB ACTIVITIES SESSION 06 Mathematical Talk Key Stage 1 and 2 Club Quiz Resources Splat instructions. 20 questions each on separate cards Enough answer sheets one per pair A whistle or bell A stop watch Clip boards and pencils Hints and Tips You will need 20 stations; try to keep them as separate as possible. Start the children off so that there is at least one problem free between each pair this reduces the temptation to look at what other people are doing and offers some flexibility in the event that children do not move immediately when asked because they are finishing off a problem. MATHEMATICAL FOCUS Reasoning Logical thinking Being systematic SESSION OUTLINE To Start Play a game of splat using times tables, number bonds or anything else the children need to work on (see resources for instructions). Main Activity Explain that they will be doing a Club Quiz. They will be getting points for each station. Get the children into pairs and spread them out amongst the stations. They will work together to go round each quiz station. When appropriate, move the children on to the next task. Round-up As a group get the children to swap answer sheets and go over the questions awarding answers. Encourage the children to explain their answers.

2 Number of players: No maximum Aim: To be the last player standing Splat! Instructions: Choose a topic, e.g. number bonds or times tables. Children stand in a circle. Choose a leader (or the teacher can lead if you are working with a younger year group). The leader stands in the middle of the circle and splats (points) at a player in the circle and asks a question. For example, if you have chosen times tables, they might say: 3x4. The player who is pointed at should duck. The two players either side should turn to face each other and shout the answer as quickly as possible. o If they shout the wrong answer they are out and should sit down. o If they are slowest, they are out. *The leader can replay if they can t decide who won. The player who was pointed at should stand back up. When a player is out, the other players have to look round the circle as they may not be immediately next to the person who is splatted. Continue this process until you are left with 2 players. To finish: The two final players should stand back to back. The leader will say step or splat. The players should take one step each time the leader says step. When the leader shouts splat, they should turn and shout splat while holding their hand up at the other player. The winner is the person who shouts splat first.

3 Club Quiz Problems Problem 1 How many triangles can you see? Problem Rearrange the five digits above to make the smallest odd number possible.

4 Problem 3 It takes Leon an hour and a half to clean his bedroom. His mother can do it in half the time and his dad says that, although it is Leon s job to clean his room, he (Leon s dad) could do it in 15 minutes more time than Leon s mum. Leon s sister, Sharon, tells her mum off for cleaning the room and says that Leon is old enough to do it himself. Their mum agrees. Craftily, Sharon offers Leon a deal - she will clean his room for 6, which is what she would charge for one hour s work normally. Sharon cleans the room in 5 minute less time than his dad said he would take. Leon hands over the 6. Did Sharon strike a good deal? That is, she spent less than an hour cleaning? Problem 4 A pack of nuts costs 80p and a fruit drink costs 45p. How much would it cost altogether for three packs of nuts and three drinks?

5 Problem 5 The bar chart shows the number of bottles of milk a local café used last week. How many bottles of milk did they use all together? Problem 6 How many right angles can you see?

6 Problem 7 Roxana always sits at the lunch table with two of her friends. On Thursday there are already three pupils sitting at the table when Roxana and her friends sit down. A few minutes later, two more friends come along to join them as one pupil leaves. Just before Roxane gets ready to go out to the playground two more pupils leave the table. How many people are left as Roxana gets up? Problem 8 What are the missing numbers? 1, 4,, 10, 13, 1, 3, 9,, 81, 12, 6, 3,,

7 Problem 9 Which shapes have rotational symmetry? Problem Rearrange the five digits above to make the largest even number possible.

9 Problem 12 List all the numbers greater than 23 and less than 48 that are divisible by 4 and also by 3. Problem 13 At 3.30pm Asha leaves school and starts to walk home. It normally takes her 20 minutes to walk straight home. Today Asha stops at the sweet shop and buys herself some chocolate. This took an extra10 minutes. Then she stopped to talk to her friend Josh and this took another 15 minutes. What time did Asha get home? Problem 14 Muhammad has 5 to spend at the school fair. As he goes around he sees the following items: A model bulldozer 1.20 A set of magic markers 90p Bag of mixed sweets 50p A model plane making kit 1.70 A book about cars 75p How much money does he need if he is to buy all the items he has seen?
