1 Shreveport Society for Nature Study BIRD STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER Volume 22, Number 10 June 3, 2008 Next Meeting June 9, 2008 PANAMA S CANOPY TOWER & CANOPY LODGE MR. CLYDE MASSEY JUNE PROGRAM When: Tuesday, June 9, 2008, 6:00 p.m. Where: LSU in Shreveport Museum of Life Sciences In October 2007, I traveled to Panama with VENT in search of tropical birds. Our base of operations during the first week was the fabulous Canopy Tower, a renovated radar station in the heart of the rainforest in Soberania National Park near Panama City. Looking out from the top of the canopy tower offers a unique view of the surrounding rainforest and its birds. Many of the canopy species can be observed at eye level and the views of the surrounding mountains and the Panama Canal are breathtaking. The second week we traveled about 60 miles west of Panama City to a town called El Valle, where the Canopy Lodge is located. This new lodge was built from the ground up by Raul Arias de Para, who also renovated the Canopy Tower. Its location is higher in elevation than the canopy tower and offers a different group of birds. The Canopy Lodge has feeders that allow close views of many tropical birds. Panama has over 900 species of birds in a compact geographic area which makes finding birds rather easy. Central Panama, along the Canal Zone, boasts a high number of species with a mix of Central and South American birds. Its modern infrastructure combined with a growing interest in ecotourism make birding a pleasure. Please join us at the June meeting as we explore the forests and birds of Central Panama. Membership in the BSG is encouraged but is not required for participation in field trips. Field trips will LEAVE the designated meeting place at the time posted for each field trip. Plan to arrive early for field trip orientation and carpooling/caravanning arrangements. What to bring on field trips: binoculars, two-way radios, scope, if you have one, snacks, and drinks. In case of bad weather, contact the designated leader to see if the field trip will take place. NABA BUTTERFLY COUNT Sunday, June 15, 2008 Compiler Jeff Trahan, , jftrahan@bellsouth.net This is the eighth annual North American Butterfly Association (NABA) count for Shreveport. Butterfly counts are very similar to bird counts. The 15-mile diameter count circle for the Shreveport count is centered on the intersection of Norris Ferry Road and Overton Brooks Road. This area includes much of southeastern Shreveport, Wallace Lake, Keithville, and a small portion of Bossier Parish. If you live within the circle, you may participate by counting butterflies in your yard or you may count in a designated portion of the circle. Contact Jeff for forms and instructions. Participants will gather at the home of Jeff and Jean Trahan at 505 Americana in Shreveport at 6:00 p.m. for the count tally. 2 WILD BIRD CENTER EVENTS Beginner Bird Walks Saturday, June 7 and 21, July 5 and 19, 2008, 8:00-10:00 a.m. The Wild Bird Center conducts field trips the first and third Saturday of every month, weather permitting. Meet at the store in the University Place Shopping Center (also known as the Target Shopping Center) at the corner of Youree Drive and East 70 th Street. Destinations vary according to local sightings and may include local parks, country roads, or a great backyard. Loaner binoculars are available. For more information on any Wild Bird Center event, call Dennis or Janice Forshee at the Wild Bird Center, BIRD (2473). NORTH AMERICAN MIGRATION COUNT COMPILES 16 YEARS by Hubert Hervey It is hard to believe the BSG has been participating in the NAMC for sixteen years. Time flies when you are having fun. It began in 1993 when I agreed to head up the NAMC effort for Caddo Parish, and has since expanded to a count encompassing most of northwestern Louisiana. We usually have six parishes to report. I believe it was in 1994 that the LOS had the leader of the NAMC as a speaker and he told us that he always wanted to be a ruler, so from now on we could consider him as King Stalsz. He said we could expect a book on the results in about ten years. I am fully aware that we who expect books about birds to be published in a timely fashion in Louisiana are doomed to be disappointed. I have written my book, not much about birds, in a period of three months and it is now at the publishers. I have tried to Google up NAMC and have met with defeat; it is located there but defies my efforts to update any real data related reports from national headquarters. So I keep on reporting our NAMC data to Marty Floyd and wondering when we can have some published results to our efforts. The first two years I received published hints at some of the new findings that were being unveiled by the NAMC, such as circum-gulf migrating species and trans-gulf species, but those reports dried up. I have decided that we have enough data for our area that I will compile what I can and give you some meaningful findings. You are free to draw your own conclusions, but I may add a few thoughts as we go along. Warning:
3 this is a more detailed report than I have given to BSG in the past. Table 1 Species Counted in Northwestern Louisiana on NAMC day each Year: Year No. Species Year No. Species No. Individuals , , , ,942 We can tell that the first two or even three years we were getting to know our areas and how to get the best areas covered most thoroughly was second (162 species) only to 1999 with 164 species. What is amazing about this year is that we had nobody on Red River, which always gives us several exclusive birds. We were fortunate to have birds grounded by weather that was followed by north winds so the migrant birds remained in greater numbers than usual. The table above can be our guide for how well we are doing in future years. Although I can t prove it statistically I am also convinced that we have better numbers if our count is scheduled during the first half of the possible time frame. The next table shows our fourteen highest count species. We have more colonial nesting birds now than in 1993, and this clearly shows up in the tremendous increase in Cattle Egret, and Cliff Swallow. I am always encouraged to see resident nesting species such as Northern Cardinal, Northern Mockingbird, Carolina Chickadee, and Mourning Dove holding a fairly steady count over this length of time. I see our species of concern as being Purple Martin, Eastern Kingbird, and perhaps Indigo Bunting. Heron rookeries are located at Mibermel (near Powhatan), Lock and Dam 4 entry road, and Cross Lake Dam. We did not count rookeries at Long Lake in Red River Parish nor the Bayou Pierre Wildlife Management Area DeSoto Parish unit. The Mibermel rookery is now host to six pairs of Great-tailed Grackles nesting among the herons and egrets, and two pairs of Tree Swallows nesting in cavities on the south end of the lake. These rookeries add to numbers of Little Blue Heron, Anhinga, and even White Ibis. The decline in Great Egrets is due to deterioration of the rookery at Buzzard Island on Cross Lake. Dickcissel numbers vary with the progress of haying operations, as they require tall grass for nesting. When conditions allow the number is high. The Cliff Swallow story is most amazing, with colonies located at LA 2 Bridge, Lock and Dam 5 and 4, Jimmy Davis Bridge, Coushatta Bridge (not counted) and I-220 at Red River and Cross Lake. The decline in 2004 occurred because of illegal shooting at Cattle Island that caused desertion of the nesting area with a reluctance to return evident also in The five year averages in the last two columns are interesting to study as trends can be readily seen. Note: 2004 was used in both averages because it was abnormal enough to skew either set if not included in both. Table 2 can be found on the page 4. MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING May 6, 2008 Museum of Life Sciences at LSUS Board members participating in the meeting were Mac Hardy, Jeff Trahan, Jean Trahan, Nancy Menasco, Amanda Lewis, Jim Ingold, Jerry Bertrand, Hubert Hervey, John Dillon, Bill Hall, and Silviera Hunt. Treasurer s Report Jean Trahan reported that for the month ending April 30, 2008, the club had $6, in the bank. In addition, we had $ and $ in prepaid expenses at the post office and LSUS printing, respectively. The fund balance is $$6, The bank balance is higher than in the past because of one large donation to the club. Donations After some discussion, a motion was made and approved to donate $ to each of the following organizations: Baton Rouge Audubon Society (for use at Peveto Woods), Walter B. Jacobs Nature Park, Minden High School Nature Club, Caroline Dorman Nature Preserve, and the Ouachita Mountain Biological Station. (Note: minutes are continued on page 5) 3

Meet at the Wild Bird Center in the University Place Shopping Center. NAMC Report Hubert Hervey said that observers at the recent North American Migration Count reported 162 species. This was the second highest number of species reported at this event for northwestern Louisiana. The best bird was Cassin s Sparrow found by Terry Davis. Other noteworthy species were Purple Gallinule (3), White-winged Dove, Swainson s Hawk, Yellowheaded Blackbird, and Bobolink. Bird Talk Amanda Lewis reported that the Cassin s Sparrow was still present the morning of this meeting. Ron Martin said that there may be a Mississippi Kite nest in one of the tall trees at the A. C. Steere School grounds. Linda Adrion at first thought she saw a bear in Claiborne Parish, but it turned out to be two Wild Turkeys. Silviera Hunt spotted a Baltimore Oriole nectaring at her hummingbird feeder. This was a new species for her yard. Observers are abbreviated by the first and last initials. Dates and localities of observations are summarized under the observer s initials. Sightings are arranged by species. Following each species is a line of data in the following format: date, initials of the observer, number of birds observed, initials of another observer, number of birds they observed, etc. For the number of birds observed, a 1 is used for both 1 bird and for numbers not reported by the observer. For example: 01/12/99 BB 2 means that on January 12, 1999, BB saw two birds. Then by looking on the observer list, located after the sightings, you can determine that BB is Bob Birder and on 1/12/99 he was birding C. Bickham Dickson Park. Report bird records for the newsletter to Mac Hardy by the 15 th of each month. All bird records reported here are observations of the observers and are therefore the responsibility of the observer.
