2 Trip Diary Tour leader: Zoltán Baczó with Harry Baillie, and Derek & Liz Hardy The Danube Delta, and its varied habitats along the western coast of the Black Sea, showed our small and select group of participants what a wonderful place it is to visit in spring. This nine day trip is designed to visit the most important birding spots of this bird-rich coastal belt of Romania, to leisurely explore the available bird species characteristic of its varied habitats, and to focus on local breeders and late spring migrants. As usual, we had a very successful trip, with 177 bird species observed and some extremely good views of many! Straight from the beginning, after the group had arrived, we soon enjoyed masses of birds around Calarasi`s first-class wetland sites, with the perfect afternoon light behind us! We had our first Little Bitterns, Spoonbills, Glossy Ibises, Purple Herons, all four grebe species, and all the marsh terns were here. The show continued with 100+ Ferruginous Ducks, mixed colonies of 300 Whiskered Terns with Black-necked Grebes and two separate colonies of Black-headed Gulls and Black-winged Stilts. What a good start! Early evening we arrived at our accommodation in the Bulgarian city of Silistra. The next morning, we had a pre-breakfast walk, birding in the nearby park along the Danube, watching flocks of 40 Goldfinches eating seeds of Dandelion flowers; the highlight was a Syrian Woodpecker perched in the open over our head. After breakfast, we continued our journey to the Black Sea coast and some excellent morning birding mainly along the Danube Valley. New birds immediately appeared around Ostrov`s vineyard, such as newly arrived Red-backed Shrikes, Beeeaters, territorial Ortolan Buntings, two male Barred Warblers, a pair of Wrynecks and a Black Kite. Our next stop was in the vicinity of Buceag village, where flooded fishponds along the Danube were full with birds. Here we saw 50+ Ruddy Shelducks, Garganeys, Whiskered Terns, a distant Whitetailed Eagle and a feeding flock of Glossy Ibises. We had lunch in the Canaraua Fetei woodland, where Red-rumped Swallows breed together with hundreds of Barn Swallows and House Martins. At this site we had our best view of a pale morph Booted Eagle that glided right over our heads. Early afternoon we reached Mamaia, where we had time to check in to our rooms, then took a short visit around Navodari before the evening dinner. The first day had given us a flavour of what was to come. During the next three days we mostly birdwatched around the Sinoe lagoons and steppe grasslands - agricultural fields of coastal Dobrudja. Highlights here were numerous and included: hundreds of soaring White and seven Dalmatian Pelicans; three fine Marsh Sandpipers and 80 Collared Pratincoles: six dainty Little Terns; a single Red-breasted Flycatcher and brick-red breeding-plumaged Red-throated Pipits on migration; speciality male Pied Wheatears on the rocky areas and Paddyfield Warblers amongst the reeds; Calandra and Short-toed Larks; and a male Levant Sparrowhawk hunting then eating a lizard 100 metres away from us. However, more raptors came in the shape of 80+ Redfooted Falcons, two immature Pallid Harriers, an immature (3 rd calendar-year) Eastern Imperial Eagle and (almost best of all) a close, perched Saker Falcon! Above Babadag forest, Short-toed Eagles, Honey Buzzards and Long-legged Buzzards glided in a northerly direction. Whilst in the woodland, Icterine and Wood Warblers, and Blackcaps sang without intermission. Near Enisala fortress, Short-toed Eagles, Long-legged Buzzards and more White Pelicans were the main attractions; then just after lunch, we arrived at Tulcea and started discovering the Delta`s birdlife from our small boat. Due to the size of the group, accommodation in the Danube Delta this time was in a four-star pension in Mila 23 village, but this necessary change had no negative effect on our birding or sense of comfort! 2 Limosa Holidays & Travelling Naturalist

3 We had mostly sunny and warm days here, and these excellent conditions were conducive to finding our target species. Every morning we would start our daily program from Mila 23, then return to our accommodation for lunch and dinner. The main destinations visited during these four days were: the seashore near Sulina; a nice oak woodland near Letea village; and lots of different lakes and channels north to the Sulina branch. Higlights in the Delta were: six Great Black-headed Gulls, hundreds of White Pelicans, Black, Lesser Spotted and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, singing Little Crake, Collared Flycatchers, singing Thrush Nightingales, White-winged Black Terns, a close Little Bittern, Redrumped Swallows, Red-necked Grebes, Hobbies, Eastern Olivaceous Warbler and, of course, our evening dinners on the terrace, in the light of the setting sun! All in all, this spring was a very productive and enjoyable birding trip to south-eastern Romania. Thank you for visiting.
