Acquisition Information: Accession Donation from J. de Navarre Macomb, Jr. Processor and Date: Amber K. King, April-June 2010 Processing Note: The documents were found topsy-turvy in two boxes in a storage area at the Ravenswood facility, with the slide lectures and accompanying materials found in the same room but in better organizational conditions. All documents included with the scripts of the lectures were retained with the lecture materials. All other materials were sorted after reviewing the materials and then given an overarching organization as the original order was lost. All photographic print materials were removed and placed together for permanent storage in film room in storage. 2 in slide trays, but transferred to acid-free slide boxes for long-term storage, maintaining the original order found in the trays. These materials are also housed separately in the film rooms in storage. Biographical Sketch: J. (John) de Navarre Macomb, Jr. ( ) was an amateur naturalist and photographer with a particular love for birds. He studied at the Latin School of Chicago and the Hill School in Pottsdown, Pennsylvania before earning his college degree at Princeton. He served in World War II for five years, one year in the US, two years in the Pacific, and two years on the European front. When he came home from the war he continued his employment with the Inland Steel Company in Chicago ultimately working for them for 43 years, retiring as the assistant to the director of corporate communications. After retirement, he and his wife Marjorie Street Macomb indulged their love of travel and photography by visiting places all over the world. From these travels and the thousands of photographs he took he developed slide lectures that described these trips, including his own impressions, an overview of the various cultures and societies he encountered, and the local flora and fauna. Macomb had a number of interests beyond his work and a love of travel. He was an accomplished musician, spoke five languages, and was an active volunteer for various social groups. His volunteer work mainly focused on groups working to aid abused or neglected children. Scope and Content: The majority of these materials relate to his personal pursuits and enjoyments, with an emphasis on travel and bird watching and not to his career with the Inland Steel Company. The scripts found with his travel lectures contain many phrases that can be considered offensive. Today these statements and/or views are considered politically incorrect or are no longer used. These statements were made by J. de Navarre Macomb, Jr. and in no way reflect the views of the Chicago Academy of Sciences and its Peggy Notebaert Museum nor of any of its staff. Series Description: Series 1: Personal ( , ) This series contains correspondence, including letters and invitations, materials relating to various organizations to which J. de Navarre Macomb was a member or made donations. It also includes information in regards to specific trips he made, including certificates and visas, as well as a few materials relating to his wife Marjorie Street Macomb. In addition there are a few objects in this collection relating to meetings he attended, places he visited, or items he took with him when giving certain lectures. This series is divided into five sub-series: General, Organizations, Trips, Miscellaneous, and Objects. Series 2: General Research ( , ) This series contains materials Macomb collected about locations not directly cited in his slide lectures. The materials include notes, maps, clippings from newspapers and magazines, articles from magazines or other publications, and other printed materials, including reprints, travel brochures, etc. It is organized by continent: Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, North America, South America, and then by county and/or state. 3 Macomb. This series is divided into six sub-series: Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, North America and South America. Series 3: General Research Subjects ( , ) This series contains materials Macomb collected about set subjects, birds, botany, Christopher Columbus, fish, flags, food, geology, herpetology, invertebrates, language, malacology, mammals, marsupials, soil, tobacco, water and waterways, and zoos. Within these headers are notes, clippings from newspapers and magazines, articles from magazines and other publications, maps, prints and drawings, and other printed materials, including reprints, brochures, etc. It is organized alphabetically by subject. Research on birds can also be found in the next series, Lectures, as these materials can be tied directly to those lectures. This series is divided into sixteen sub-series: Birds, Botany, Christopher Columbus, Fish, Flags, Food, Geology, Herpetology, Invertebrates, Language, Malacology, Mammals, Marsupials, Soil, Tobacco, Water and Waterways, and Zoos. Series 4: Lectures ( , ) This series contains materials Macomb gathered as research for his travel slide lectures. All of these lectures, 22 in all, were completed and have slides pulled and organized by Macomb. Each lecture contains notes, scripts, clippings and articles from newspapers, magazines, and other sources, other printed materials, including postcards, brochures, and reprints, maps, and bird research that can be tied to the geographical area discussed in the lectures. The slides are housed separately in the film room in storage and comprise their own series. This series is divided into twenty-one sub-series: Advertising Brochure, Photography, Alaska, Iceland, Polynesia, A Tale of Three Rivers, Brazil, Inca, Maya, Central America, Galapagos, Sonoran Desert, Mauritius and Madagascar, East Africa, South Africa, Egypt, Scotia and the North, Norway and the North, Antarctica, Indian Ocean, East Indies, Australia, and New Zealand. Series 5: Lectures (Incomplete) ( , ) This series contains materials Macomb gathered as research for his travel slide lectures. All of these lectures, 2 in all, were never completed by Macomb. Each lecture contains notes, scripts, clippings and articles from newspapers, magazines, and other sources, other printed materials, including postcards, brochures, and reprints, maps, and bird research that can be tied to the geographical area discussed in the lectures. Any associated slides are housed separately in the film room in storage and comprise their own series. This series is divided into two sub-series: West Indies and Greece and the Near East. Series 6: Photographs ( , ) (stored separately in RVWD.302 Film Room.Unit 1.I) This series contains photographic prints and negatives taken by or used by Macomb. It is divided into four sub-series, Pre-Military Years, Military Years, Lectures, and General Research. When possible, links between these images and corresponding slides in the various lectures were noted with the photographic prints and/or negatives. Series 7: Slides Lectures (stored separately in RVWD.305 Film Room.Unit 14.A) This series contains 35mm slides that make up 22 lectures that correspond to the research and scripts found in Series 4.
