3 ITINERARY THAILAND NORTH & CENTRAL Day 0: Arrive (17 Feb). Fly to Chiang Rai International Airport (own arrangements), where you will be greeted by our Australian guide and transferred to your hotel (transfer and hotel included in price) to rest and refresh. Should you decide to travel earlier, please make your own way to our hotel. We will meet for introduction, dinner and orientation. Overnight: Chiang Rai (en-suite hotel room; meals included: D). Day 1: Chiang Rai - Thaton (18 Feb). Today the tour starts in earnest. After an early breakfast we ll bird around Chiang Saen lake which provides a nice, easy and birdy open area for the first morning (Rufous-winged Buzzard, Chinese Francolin, Green-billed Malkoha). From there we travel to Thaton (we ll have lunch on the way) where we will spend a couple of hours at the famous Thaton paddy fields. We ll be seeing birds along the way such as White-breasted Kingfisher, various species of Munia and perhaps a raptor or two, as we head to our main destination. Tha Thon is on a river near a lowland area and can produce some rare and uncommon birds and is also a convenient access point to Doi Lang. At the Thaton paddy fields we expect various swamp birds including Bush Warbler, Thick-billed Warbler, Cinnamon Bittern, Little Ringed Plover, Grey-headed Lapwing. We ll then travel to the town of Fang. Overnight Phumanee Hotel, Fang (en-suite hotel room; meals included: B, L, D. Days 2 and 3: Doi Lang (19-20 Feb). We ll spend two full days in well-known Doi Lang National Park. One of the largest parks in Thailand s north, the park covers 1170 square kilometers and is dominated by two north-south mountain ranges, elevations range from 600 m to 1798 m at the peak of Doi Lang. During Feb Mar temperatures range between 27 to 32C. The fertile forests are made up of hill evergreen forest, moist evergreen forest, mixed deciduous forest and dry dipterocarp forest. The park protects a variety of habitats and has been known as a good birding spot for many years but now it s even better thanks to the improved access road and hides the local birders have put up to photograph the birds. Now Doi Lang offers some of the best bird watching and photography in Thailand. These 2 days we ll be birding different parts of the 30km road up the mountain including the top 5km which is the best. Birds including: Blue Whistling Thrush, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Golden Bush-Robin, Whitebellied Redstart, Himalayan Bluetail, Rufous-gorgeted flycatcher, Rusty-naped Pitta, Scarlet-faced Liocichla, Spectacled Barwing, Spot-throated Babbler, Ultramarine Flycatcher, White-gorgeted Flycatcher, Spot-breasted Parrotbill. Overnight Phumanee Hotel, Fang (en-suite hotel room; meals included: B, L, D). Day 4: Doi Ang Khang (21 Feb). Doi Ang Khang, like Doi Lang, is an area on the border with Myanmar consisting of a number of peaks and ridges that, although largely deforested, contain a lot of scrubby vegetation and forest patches which provide enough habitat to house a good number of bird species, many of which are found in few other parts of the country. The scenery is quite beautiful and a number of small hill tribe villages are dotted around the region. The Kings Project Garden is Banded Pitta, Silver-eared Mesia, White-browed Shortwing, Whitebellied Steve Potter, Oriental Pied Hornbill

4 located at the summit, which makes for easy birding and it attracts a few specialties as well. Specialties include Mrs Hume's Pheasant which is seen crossing the road; Giant Nuthatch in the pine trees, and Purple Cochoa in the mountain forest. Other birds we ll look for include White-capped Redstart, White-tailed Robin, Blackbreasted Thrush, Brown-breasted Bulbul, Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush, Grey-sided Thrush, White-headed Bulbul, Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, Blue-winged Minla, Common Rosefinch, Japanese Thrush, Dark-backed Sibia, Japanese Tit, Speckled Piculet and more. The National Park has beautiful natural scenery and waterfalls, while the forest in the park include Moist Evergreen Forest, Pine forest and Mixed Deciduous Forest. There are many beautiful flowers including orchids, phycastylis and rhododendron. Sphagnum Moss and osmanda fern are found at higher levels in the park. Because of its broad altitudinal range and the cool climate of its upper reaches, the park supports the largest number of bird species of any site in Thailand. Species restricted to Doi Inthanon are Ashy-throated Warbler and an endemic race of the Green-tailed Sunbird; the park is the only site where Chestnut-bellied Rock-Thrush and Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker are known to occur.
