Trip Report: ALL CHILE 2018 Guide: Eduardo Navarro Dates: October 29th to November 16th

All Chile: From north to south. This trip report covers 18 spectacular birding days throughout Chile, from Arica on the Peruvian border in north of the country to the capital Santiago and surroundings in the central area finishing in Punta Arenas in fascinating Patagonia. The trip was conveniently available in three parts so you could do any one of 3 segments. We managed one of the most spectacular bird list for the west coast of southern South America. Day 1: Arica We took an early flight from Santiago to Chacalluta Airport, located to the north of the city of Arica. We went straight to the Lluta estuary, one of the largest in the north of Chile, where numerous birds congregate, both resident and migratory, every year. At our first stop we got: Gray, Kelp, Belchers and the scarce Grey-headed Gull. In addition, a juvenile James s Flamingo, Peruvian Pipit and Puna Plover were registered. We decided to move quickly towards the south to Camarones Valley. Much better preserved than the other two Valley s (Lluta and Azapa), it was the place where we looked for one of the most threatened birds in the world, the tiny endemic Chilean Woodstar. The latest studies on this species show a clear decrease in population numbers, with less than 300 individuals registered during the last survey. We had an excellent view of one female sitting on her nest and also a male, giving a little hope for the survival for this beautiful species. In the same place we got the Pied-crested Tit-tyrant, which is very local in Chile. Along the same valley we reached the alfalfa fields searching for a species only described from Chile two years ago, the Raimondi`s Yellow Finch. We observed a small flock. We ended up looking for Tamarugo Conebill, after which we returned to our hotel. Day 2: Arica Pelagic Trip and drive to Putre. The quiet sea off Arica gave us a pleasant trip in its warm waters. After departing early from the Arica dock, several common species of the Humboldt current began to appear: Peruvian Pelican and Booby and Inca Terns went out to feed at sea. Soon after sailing, several hundred Sooty Shearwater began to fly near us, and the small fluttering s of Peruvian Diving-Petrel and Elliot s

storm petrel were noticeable just in front of our boat. As we moved slowly out to sea, we added to our list: Long-tailed Jaeger, Parasitic Jaeger and the endangered Peruvian Tern. When we started to return to the port, a group of Risso's Dolphin marked the end of a calm pelagic trip in the northern waters of Chile. After lunch in the port of Arica, we started to drive slowly aalong the road that would take us to the Chilean altiplano, looking for the specialties at high altitude. Day 3: Putre Putre is a small village located at 3500 meters altitude and a hotspot for birdwatchers. With our final destination being Lake Chungará, we decided to start early on Putre`s old road. At our first stop on the way for some specialties of the area: a small group of five Ornate Tinamou, Plainbreasted Earthcreeper, Ash-breasted Sierra Finch and White-browed Chat-Tyrant were observed. Then we drove to Las Cuevas, inside the Lauca National Park, where large flocks of Vicuñas and groups of Mountain Vizcachas were resting in the sunshine provided a scenic backdrop to the landscape. We found the widely distributed White-throated Sierra-finch, Puna Ground-tyrant, Cordilleran Canastero, Andean Flicker Grey-breasted Seedsnipe and a family group of the spectacular Diademed Sandpiper-plover. Finally, we arrived at Lake Chungará at 4500 meters, at the base of the Pomerapy and Parinacota volcanoes, which dominated the background. After lunch we found: Giant Coot, Puna Teal, White-fronted Ground-tyrant, D'Orbigny Chat-tyrant and White-winged Cinclodes. During the afternoon we birding around Parinacota village, where a fertile wetland housed Giant and Slate- colored Coot, Puna Ibis, Andean Lapwing and White-winged Diuca-Finch. We also enjoyed a huge mixed flock of Black and Hooded Siskin. Before going back to Putre, we stopped to check a big flock of Flamingos. With the scope, we identified the 3 Andean species: Chilean, Andean and Puna (James s) Flamingo, Andean Avocet and Puna Rhea. After dinner we went to see Band-winged Nightjar before going to rest after an excellent birding day. Day 4: Putre The next day we started observing birds walking from our hotel toward the bottom of a creek bed. We completed the specialties for the Putre area: Cayon Canastero, Andean Hillstar, Whitethroated Earthcreeper, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Band tailed Seedeater and the migratory White-throated Hawk. We moved down, to visit the Hummingbird Sanctuary, with good views and photographs of Bran-colored Flycatcher, Oasis Hummingbird and the beautiful Peruvian Sheartail.

Day 5: Final day at north We used the last morning to get some shorebirds on the rocks close to our hotel, big flocks of Willet, Ruddy Turnstone and Surfbird were found. During the morning we decided to go to see the recently discovered colony of Markham's Storm- Petrel. In the middle of the desert more than 35,000 arrive during the night to reproduce in small natural cavities in saltpeter crust. Currently, efforts are being made to try to protect the colony and reduce mortality, which according to estimations, could reach 20,000 individuals that die in each season due to light pollution. Central Zone The central zone of Chile is one of the high points of the trip. A change of landscape, new passengers that joined the group, and a journey that goes through valleys, mountains, wetlands and that finally reaches the first Patagonian forests, and are the scenes to look for the rest of the endemic birds, like tapaculos and other specialties for the area. Day 6: Highlands. We drove early into the Andes to Farellones, looking for our first endemics. One by one they appeared for us: Chilean Tinamou, White-throated Tapaculo, and the almost endemic Chilean Mockingbird was the beginning during the morning. Also, in a small stream we got very good views of a couple of Torrent Duck. A short stop in Yerba Loca Reserve gave us Giant Hummingbird and White-sided Hillstar and another endemic bird, Dusky Tapaculo. On the road we spotted Magellanic Horned Owl, roosting on a tree at the side, so we stopped for a look a few minutes before lunch. During the afternoon we stopped in a small wetland to get: Black-chinned Siskin, Sharp-billed Canastero and Grey-flanked and Buff-winged Cinclodes. Then, we kept moving and loctaed: Scale-throated Eearthcreeper, Rufous-banded Miner and White-browed and Rufous-naped ground-tyrant. Our last stop was at Valle Nevado Ski Resort, where 10 Andean Condors were perched on the roof of a building and soaring around. The last bird we looked at was Black-fronted Ground tyrant.

Day 7: Yeso Valley Our second day in the mountains took us to El Yeso Valley. We did a short stop to see, for the second time, a couple of Torrent Ducks on the Maipo River. Our second stop to look for the endemic Crag Chilia who were nesting on the rocky cliff and showed well for us. We continued our ascent into this colorful valley to a wetland where we spotted some Yellowrumped Siskin, Gray-hooded, Mourning and Plumbeous Sierra-Finch. Moving a little higher we found Andean Goose, and then it was time for the hunt for our main target of the day, the Diademed Sandpiper-Plover. Here in a large bog at 2500 meters we found a nesting pair which gave us excellent views. This was probably the only couple nesting in the wetland. Also, at this site we found at least 10 Gray-breasted Seedsnipe and different Ground Tyrants: Ochre-naped and White-browed. After a very successful day we set off back down the rocky valley amid spectacular mountain scenery, and onto Santiago to overnight. Day 8: Birding the pacific coast. After two days in the mountains, it was time to visit the coast of central Chile. We decided to change our regular tour on the coast to look for the elusive Stripe-backed Bittern. We drove early in the morning to Algarrobo, were we had the chance to enjoy the Bittern peeking at us between the reeds of the lagoon. Maipo estuary always offers large flocks of birds, and this time was not an exception. Big flocks of Black skimmer and Sanderling were observed on the beach. On the estuary we saw a good group of aquatic birds: Chiloe Wigeon, Yellow-billed Pintail, Coscoroba and Black-necked Swan and some coots were obtained. In the reeds we obtained excellent sightings of Austral Wren and Wren-like Rushbird. At lunch time at a coastal restaurant we looked for another endemic bird: Seaside Cinclodes but we could not find it on this opportunity. We decided to drive to Viña del Mar, where on a large rock, there was a huge colony of Inca Tern, Red-legged and Guanay cormorant. This is where we would find the Seaside Cinclodes, another endemic bird to finish the day. Day 9: Pelagic trip in Valparaiso. Valparaiso always offers excellent pelagic trips and the Humboldt Current generates the ideal conditions to amke each trip into a unique experience. We shared the boat with another group of birders; so many eyes were on the horizon.

We started with the first Sooty and Pink-footed Shearwater s, which were seen over the sea, some Peruvian Diving-Petrels were also observed while we were moving off shore. One by one the albatross began to appear on the trip: Black-browed, Salvin s and Northern Royal Albatross. But some less frequent ones were also observed: Buller`s and Chatham Albatross, We recorded 5 different species. Of the Petrels we recorded: Northern Giant-Petrel, Wilson's Storm-petrel, White-chinned Petrel and the unusual Masatierra Petrel to complete this excellent pelagic trip. Day 10: Colbun Early in the morning we decided to start at the Batuco Wetlands, to get excellent views of most of the Ducks in the central area of Chile, which included: Yellow-billed Teal, White-cheeked Pintail, Cinnamon Teal, Red Shoveler, Lake Duck, and two less frequently seen species : Rosybilled Pochard and strange Black-headed Duck. In the same wetland, we got excellent views of Burrowing Owl, Collared Plover and the last Andean Geese who use this area in the winter time. After this wonderful morning we started to drive south heading for the Patagonian Nothofagus Forest and all its specialties. We drove south to reach Colbun Lake, where we got the last of the ducks for the central area: Spectacled Duck and also the southernmost Parrot in the world - Burrowing Parrot. After this long day we spent the afternoon around our accommodations, enjoying the Greenbacked Firecrown s that were flying around us, and also: Chilean Pigeon, Thorn-tailed Rayadito and White-throated Treerunner After dinner, we walked around our cabins and we heard: Band-winged Nightjar, Barn Owl, Magellanic Horned Owl and Rufous-legged Owl, but unfortunately no one wanted to come close to us. Day 11 : Altos de Lircay We went early in to Altos de Lircay National Reserve, looking for the shy tapaculos and also some specialties for the area. The endemic Chestnut-throated Huet-huet was timid, but its characteristic song accompanied us throughout the day. Then we walked through the Patagonian Forest, and at the lookout, it was possible to see Chucao Tapaculo walking inside the Chilean Bamboo.

During the afternoon, in another area of the National Park, we got another the tiny Magellanic Tapaculo. At night after dinner, we went out to look for Owls. The Rufous-legged Owl came literally, over our heads, giving us a great view of this wonderful bird. Day 12: Cerro Ñielol We went back to the forest, looking for better views of Chestnut-throated Huet-huet. This time it we managed to get a little bit more of this beautiful endemic bird. Then we drove to Temuco city, where we went straight to Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument. There we got good views of: Des Murs's wiretail, Chilean Pigeon and, when the rain started, the shy Ochre-flanked Tapaculo showed up in the bamboo. Day 13: Villarrica NP Very early in the morning we went back to Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument, here we got an excellent view of Black-throated Huet-huet crossing the path in front of us. This was the last tapaculo on our list, getting the Grand Slam! Then we completed our endemic Chilean bird list with terrific views of a large flock of Slenderbilled Parakeet. After our second breakfast, we decided to walk around the Natural Monument, looking for the place where the Rufous-tailed Hawk nests. After a few minutes, we got some excellent views of the most threatened raptor in southern South America Then we drove to the Villarrica National Park looking, unsuccessfully, for Patagonian Forest Earthcreeper, on a cold day, but we enjoyed a beautiful landscape between the lake and the volcano. Patagonia Patagonia is a huge territory and wildlife comes from everywhere with wind, steppes, sheep, penguins and many special birds for the area This would mark the beginning of an incredible final segment of the All Chile Tour Day 14: Punta Arenas Some birders stayed in Santiago, others joined us again for the final part of the trip, Patagonia. We flew early in order to use the morning for birding. At our first stop, at a wetland close to Punta Arenas, we started in the best way. Three species of geese that included: Ashy-headed, Upland and Ruddy-headed goose. The last one seriously threatened.

In the same wetland, we also saw: Flying Steamer Duck, South American Snipe, Magellanic Oystercatcher, White-rumped Sandpiper and Two-banded Plover We then visited the esplanade, to see: Imperial and Magellanic Cormorant, Dolphin Gull and unusually close to the coastline: Southern Giant Petrel, Black-browed Albatross and Southern Fulmar. After lunch at a local restaurant where we enjoyed Patagonian lamb, king crab and even guanaco, we drove south to get beautiful pictures of: Flightless Steamer-Duck and Kelp Goose Day 15: Tierra del Fuego With the uncertainty of not knowing if the ferry would sail or not, we arrived at the port. We enjoyed an entertaining crossing in which we saw: Magellanic Penguin, Southern Giant Petrel, Black-browed Albatross, Southern Fulmar and Magellanic Diving-petrel. Once in Tierra del Fuego, we went to one of the few lagoons in which, in very low population numbers, we managed to find a pair of very local Magellanic Plovers. In the same area we saw: Patagonian Yellow-Finch, Cinnamon-bellied Ground-Tyrant and Short-billed Miner. During the afternoon we drove to Bahia Inútil, where we enjoyed a colony of King Penguin, the third Penguin for our trip! The word penguin first appears in the 16th century as a synonym for great auk. When European explorers discovered what are today known as penguins in the Southern Hemisphere, they noticed their similar appearance to the great auk of the Northern Hemisphere, and named them after this bird, although they are not closely related. Some dictionaries suggest a derivation from Welsh pen, "head" and gwyn, "white", on the basis that the name was originally applied to the great auk, either because it was found on White Head Island (Welsh Pen Gwyn) in Newfoundland, or because it had white circles around its eyes (though the head was black). Day 16: Puerto Natales We woke up at the north-eastern end of Tierra del Fuego, and on the way to our ferry we had: Chocolate-vented Tyrant and two Dotterel: Rufous-chested and Tawny-throated. On the ferry some Commerson s Dolphin and South American Tern took us back to the mainland. Once on the mainland, we drove along the pampas, where we had the very unusual and wonderful record of 3 Patagonian Tinamou, a very rare species in Chile and certainly one of the high points of the trip. The Pampa Larga, has a very well-earned name, hundreds of kilometers of gravel and many hours in the middle of the pampa, with Guanacos, Darwin's Rhea, Patagonian Hog-nosed Skunk and Patagonian Hairy Armadillo. We saw a yellow flash and when we stopped, we got very good looks at White-bridled Finch. Finally, we arrived into Puerto Natales for a well-deserved rest.

Day 17: Sierra Baguales We left early towards Torres del Paine National Park, an icon of tourism in Chile. Entering via the imposing Sarmiento Lake, we stopped at a small lagoon in search of Austral Rail, a silent, cryptic bird that was rediscovered in Chile recently. After some hard work all of us got good views. After this, we drove towards Sierra Baguales, looking for high altitude birds for the region. Here we saw: Gray-bellied Shrike-Tyrant After a fulfilling day we returned to Puerto Natales to enjoy an exquisite Patagonian barbecued lamb prepared in traditional style. A feast to say goodbye to the most complete birdwatching trip in Chile. Day 18: Final Day This day we had programmed only to drive to the airport, but decided to wake up early and visit Laguna Sofia. Here we got the last birds of the trip: Chilean Flicker, Great Shrike-Tyrant, Patagonian Sierra-Finch, Fire-eyed Diucon and Rufous-tailed Plantcutter. To complete more than 285 species in 18 wonderful birding days.
