Blue-winged Pitta Pitta moluccensis At Taman Negara we did extraordinary well for this species getting crippling views of three birds and hearing another two. The Tahan Hide was perhaps the best stake out with at least two birds present here (probably a pair. The calls of the birds were distinctly different with the females (?) call being somewhat weaker and less abrupt). Taped in here on the 17 th and 18 th with stunning views on the 17 th when a bird flew below us and perched on a nearby branch not 15 yards away from the upper storey of the hide. Also on the 18 th one was seen before dusk before the big tree before you get to the Bukit Teresek Trail. Perhaps most stunning of all was on the 22 nd when we were birding from Lubok Simpon and a bird flew across the river and perched for about a minute out in the open (in full sunlight) on an over-hanging branch before disappearing into the forest at a range of no more than 30 meters. Hooded Pitta Pitta surdida At Taman Negara a small Pitta seen in silhouette very briefly just beyond the Big Tree on the Tembeling River Trail before you get to the Bukit Teresek Trail on the 17 th had almost certainly to have been this species especially as it responded to tape (the Swedish birder s had one here the day before). Unfortunately NTV s. One gave crippling views from the Jenut Muda Trail on the 19 th. This bird was just before the top of the first hill on the trail from Lubok Simpon. About five minutes later after the top of the first hill in a small hollow (about 30 meters from the first Hooded sighting) this species or Garnet was seen all too briefly in silhouette. Matters were made worse when a few minutes later Garnet was heard to call. ( A mad few minutes..). Banded Pitta Pitta guajana Two were heard on the River Trail between Lubok Simpon and the first stream before the Tabing Hide Trail, Taman Negara on the 18 th. An attempt to tape these birds in resulted in the birds going further into the forest. One was seen cripplingly well, though briefly, from near the Tabing Hide on the 21 st.
