3 Bird control tips for best results bird control tips Use a range of different products: Different bird control products work together in synergy to create an effect on birds that is far greater than the effect of individual products used on their own. Use products that attack different senses of birds i.e. sight, sound, taste & smell. Using a combination of products that effect 3 or more different senses will have the best results. Bird control methods: Sound Deterrents: includes sonic and ultrasonic sound deterrents, gas guns and pyrotechnics. These products target birds by creating a frightening sound environment, creating an area they want to keep away from. Ultrasonic deterrents are most commonly used inside buildings, sonic deterrents and gas guns are great for wide area bird control. Pyrotechnics are ideal for quickly moving flocks of birds away from outdoor areas. Visual Scares: includes laser deterrents, predator kites and visual deterrent products. These products are seen by the birds to be threatening, causing them to leave the area. Visual deterrent are often used to add effect to other products. For example, the combination of predator kites with a BirdX sound repeller is very effective, as birds associate the predator cries from the sound unit with the visual presence of the kites. Smell Deterrents: includes Fog Force, Curb, and Birdzout Gel repellents. Fog force is one of the best bird deterrents available as its effect on birds is such, that it is impossible for them to become used to it. Used with a thermal fogger it is a valuable tool for shifting large flocks of birds. Also ideal for keeping birds out of shelter belts and other similar areas. Curb and Birdzout repellents are both good for keeping birds away from specific perch areas and nesting spots. Taste Deterrents: includes Migrate as well as Curb repellent. Migrate is an excellent food grade bird repellent, suitable for spraying on a wide range of different crops to prevent bird damage Migrate has a similar chemical base to fog force so the two products work well when used together. Roost Deterrents: includes bird spikes and bird proof gel repellent. These are often the most effective way of keeping birds off specific perch areas both inside and outside buildings. Resident birds: Birds will often become emotionally attached to a particular area. These resident birds can be the hardest to deter as they will keep coming back to the same area time and again. Removing resident birds can make a large difference in any bird problem situation, particularly where birds have been living or nesting inside buildings. The narcotic bird baits are excellent products for anaesthetising and removing large numbers of birds. Mist net or bird traps can be used to capture and remove pest birds. 3

4 sonic sound deterrents Sonic sound deterrents play audible bird distress, predator and harassment sounds. Use of natural bird sounds have been used for many years as an effective way to deter birds. A simple and cost effective way to deter birds from large areas. Different size units are available depending on the coverage required. 5 Bird Buster Tractor Alarm This alarm is designed to help eliminate birds nesting around the warm areas of tractors and machinery. It operates on 12 volts and can be powered by connecting direct to the battery. There are two settings available: Automatic setting: When the engine is started the alarm turns itself off and when the ignition is switched off and the voltage to the battery drops the alarm will turn back on. Manual setting: The alarm remains on as long as it has power. Operates with a dual blast of special sounds and within a 6 minute random cycle. 9 pyrotechnics Pyrotechnics are banger or screamer cartridges fired from a hand held launcher pistol. Our cartridges are imported from a specialist manufacturer in Germany, for reliable and consistent quality. Pyrotechnics are an effective way to add to any bird control program in outdoor areas. Bird Bangers Single Shot Launcher The Single-Shot Launcher is the standard launcher for projecting Bird Bangers and Screamers. A single cartridge and a 6mm blank are loaded in the Launcher when firing. The blank automatically ejects during firing. A firearms license is not required in NZ to use these. Users must be 18+ years old. Proof of age is required on purchase. Always aim launcher at least 45 degrees upwards so that the spent cartridges cool before hitting the ground. Explode with a very loud BANG that scares pest birds and wildlife. Will travel 25 to 30 metres before exploding. Range varies depending on firing angle & wind factor. 10 predator kites Predator kites are a life-like bird of prey, commonly flown on a short 2 metre line from a telescopic pole where they fly like a real bird. These are our most popular and successful visual bird deterrent. An effective way to protect outdoor areas from pest birds. Single Kites Available as either a Osprey Hawk or Peregrine Falcon. While neither bird is native to NZ, both have proved an effective bird deterrent - NZ wide. If using more than one kite, it is recommended to have each type, for variation. 11 visual deterrents Visual bird deterrents are one of the oldest and most common methods of deterring birds. Using frightening objects, along with the combination of flashing light and movement, scares birds away from the areas covered. Although, not necessarily 100% effective when used on their own, visual deterrents are a great option for adding effect to other bird deterrent systems. Multiple birds deterrents work together in synergy to create an affect on birds, that is far greater than the affect of the individual deterrents used on their own. Flash Tape Flash tape uses light, movement and sound to create an environment that is very annoying to birds. The holographic tape is highly reflective with multi-coloured flashes of light, the red & silver tape creates a flashing effect which is also an effective bird deterrent. In 150m rolls. 13 Bird Proof Gel bird repellents This gel creates a very sticky and uncomfortable surface that is unbearable to most birds, and tastes awful when they try to peck it off. 14 Fog Force Bird Repellent bird repellents Fog Force is a bird repellent that is applied to the air space with a thermal fogger. Birds flying through the fog, breathe this in. Although harmless to birds, the fog affects their nerves around their beak area, causing them to feel pain. After repeat exposure to the fog, birds are trained to avoid the areas covered. Fog force is best applied earlier in the morning or later in the evening as birds are flying to or from the area. The fog has the most affect, as birds fly through this. Fog Force liquid is supplied in 3.78 litre (1 gallon) bottles. The chemical is formulated from a food grade ingredient, Methyl Anthranilate (MA), which is a naturally occurring compound with reduced risk to the environment. Contains an oil based fogging solution for use in thermal foggers. MS Mini Thermal Fogger The MS-5000 Mini Fogger is a very compact and lightweight tool, and is virtually silent. This makes it ideal for using with Fog Force applications in smaller areas to keep birds away. Butane cartridges are used to heat the element and will last approximately 2 hours. The fog is produced when the hand pump is activated. Very quick and easy to use. Piezo ignition. Tank 2.8 litres. Dimensions (LxWxH) 456 x 166 x 368mm. Uses 220 gram Butane gas cartridges (sold separately). H100 Thermal Fogger This portable thermal fogger is ideal for a wide range of uses. 15 Migrate Bird Repellent Spray bird repellents Migrate is a food grade repellent spray for agriculture. It makes treated crops unpalatable to birds. It works as a sensory repellent and irritates the mouth and stomach of birds who try to ingest the treated crops, without causing adverse physiological reactions in the birds. Migrate affects the behaviour while causing no actual harm to the bird. As a result, birds will avoid feeding in places where Migrate is present, diverting them to other feeding areas. So far, no bird species has been found, that is not affected by this bird repellent. Use on high value seed crops, sweet corn, sunflowers, cherries, blueberries, stone fruit, seedlings, vegetables etc. Also repels unwanted water-birds like Canadian geese from grass areas near lakes. Recommended mix rate with water for most crops 1:20 Migrate has been formulated from food grade ingredients with an active ingredient, methyl anthranilate (MA), and is exempt from maximum residues on food crops in NZ and USA. Migrate is a micro-encapsulated product that is mixable with water in any ratio. If wet weather is imminent, apply Migrate with a sticking agent like Nu-Film 17 or Bond Xtra for best results. Do not use a spreader. COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER PESTICIDES: The active ingredient in Migrate is micro-encapsulated so it is generally safe to mix with other chemicals being applied to a crop. The compatibility with every other spray chemical has not been tested so it is recommended to mix a small amount and test for compatibility before mixing a large volume. RESIDUAL EFFECT: 5 to 14 days depending on weather conditions. To increase residual use a sticker adjuvant. WITHHOLDING PERIOD: The ERMA registration does not include any withholding period so the Migrate can be applied right up to the day of harvest. This practice is not normally recommended on fruit. It is best to apply the repellent 6 days prior to harvest, to reduce the possibility of any taste taint issues. DILUTION DIRECTIONS: Shake or stir Migrate container well prior to diluting. For ground application, mix Migrate with water at a ratio of 1 part product to parts water. A mix rate of 1 to 20 is suitable for most boom sprayer applications in Agriculture. A bottle of Migrate (9.46 litre) will make up a total of 200 litres of spray mixture when mixed 1:20. For aerial application, mix Migrate with water at a ratio of 1 part product to 1-3 parts water. APPLICATION RATES: This will vary greatly according to the type of crop being protected. A radish seed crop may use 140 litres of spray mix per hectare. (6.6 litres of Migrate) Canola may use 200 litres of spray mix per hectare. (9.46 litres of Migrate) Kiwifruit may use 900 litres of spray mix per hectare. (42.5 litres of Migrate) To repel Geese from turf areas, it is recommended to use 490 litres of spray mix per hectare. (23.5 litres of Migrate) Do not mow the treated area for several days after application. APPLICATION DIRECTIONS: Apply spray mixture so that crop receives thorough coverage. Repeat treatment after 7 days if significant bird damage begins to occur. It is best practice to spray early in the day, or late in the day when UV radiation is less harmful to the active ingredient. 15

A range of different bird spikes are available for many different applications and bird species. The most suitable spikes to use depend on the width of the area that needs to be covered, the target bird species and the bird pressure in the area. It is not recommended to use spikes, where birds are nesting. 18 Bird Poison Alphachloralose Bird Bait An easy way to get rid of resident birds. Contains alphachloralose which is a narcotic that acts by anesthetizing birds rather than killing them. This allows birds to be captured and destroyed while other non-target birds can be revived. Alphachloralose Peas Alphachloralose Wheat Treated wheat for sparrows and other grain eating birds. Recommended to pre-feed birds with untreated wheat for 2-3 days before using the treated product. Treated peas for pigeons and other larger birds. Recommended to pre-feed birds with untreated dried peas for 2-3 days before using the treated product. Alphachloralose Paste Spread on bread to target starlings and sparrows or mix with mince or fat to target mynas and mynas. Mist Net - for live bird capture Set this up in bird flight paths to catch pest birds. How this works? The net is made of a very fine 0.08mm diameter cord, spaced at 28mm apart which is almost invisible when set up. Birds do not see it, and fly straight into it and cannot get free. Available in 15m and 30m lengths. 15m is easier to use inside buildings, while 30m is often best for use in crops and orchards.
