1 Bedford RSPB Local Group Quarterly Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2016 ================================================== Local Group News We hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter keeping you up-to-date with what s happening in the Group. If you have anything you d like to share news, photos, a holiday report, or just an observation it can be given to any member of the committee at indoor meetings. 2 Result of ballot for Bedford RSPB Local Group Logo Voting took place at our May meeting and a total of 45 votes were cast, with an overwhelming majority favouring the Bullfinch as our chosen logo. In order not to infringe copyright regulation a unique photograph must be used, the one below, taken by a club member during a visit to the Scottish Highlands last May, is proposed unless anybody else has a photo taken by them they wish to be considered. The logo will be used on our new Facebook page, newsletters and new membership cards and any other documents related to our local group. BEDFORD RSPB LOCAL GROUP

(Prepared by John Tomlin) FRANCESCO CETTI ( ) When listening to an explosion of Cetti s Warbler song I became intrigued by why it carried Cetti s name. Francesco Cetti was born in Germany and educated in Italy. He was a zoologist, mathematician and Jesuit priest. From 1765 he worked in Sardinia where he produced a 4-volume Natural History of Sardinia. Later soldier and naturalist Alberto della Marmora ( ) went to Sardinia and extended Cetti s work. Here he collected Cetti s Warbler and named it Cettia cetti. Another warbler found on Sardinia by Marmora was named Marmora s Warbler (Sylvia sarda). Marion Hession
