President s Message 1 Notices 2 January Casa Pictures 3-4 Flora and Fauna Walnut Street San Carlos, California MESSAGE FROM THE PESIDENT A few things you may not know about the world of gardening;...five members of the Paradise Garden Club planted 350 hyacinth bulbs with a sign of hope WATCH US BLOOM...February is the time when we swing into high gear and plant like crazy....want to sponsor a National Garden Club Educational School? Help is available from National Garden Clubs. ( They will send you an instruction book. Which member wants to jump on this?...did you know that the great blue heron is the largest of the North American herons? They can adapt to almost any wetland habitat in their range...fresh water, salt water, grasslands and backyard pools. They have a yellow thick dagger-like bill and long legs. They stand three to four feet tall, have a wing span of almost six feet and weigh four to seven pounds. Their nest is about three feet wide and one foot deep and is located high off the ground. The great blues nest in the same spot year after year....did you know that in 1947 there were 6 million managed honey hives in the US. In 2017, the number declined to just 2.89 million hives. This is a very real threat to more than $15 billion in fruit, vegetable, and nut production that depends on the pollination process. So, you wonder how I came up with this terrific information! This and much more can be found on the following two websites: Happy Reading...all about gardening. Tom

5 Flora and Fauna By Joyce Sanns WINTER BIRDFOOD CHOICES If you are feeding backyard birds, like 40% of U.S. households do, here is a chart from the latest Audobon magazine showing the food that their research shows the different species of birds prefer. Of course, a pesticide-free yard with plants that provide a growing food source is less trouble for you and can still provide a banquet for the birds. A La Carte Birds with different beaks have different dietary needs. Large-billed species are specialized to eat seeds and nuts, while ground feeders go for grains. Use this handy menu, with advice from Audobon s Christmas Bird Count Director, Geoff Lebaron, to match species to their favorite foods. Entrée: Suet Species: Woodpeckers, wrens, titmice Prep: Try a DIY recipe by mixing seeds or grains with animal fats or nut butter. Entrée: Sunflower seeds Species: Chickadees, jays, cardinals Prep: Buy them whole and hulled; it s less messy and every piece gets eaten. Entrée: Cracked corn Species: Pheasants, doves, towhees Entrée: Mixed seeds Species: Most bird species Prep: Choose this if you have a single feeder but want to draw a bevy of birds: Entrée: Millet Species: Sparrows, joncos, blackbirds Prep: Apply generously in squirrel-rife zones; they tend to ignore it. Entrée: Nectar Species: Hummingbirds, orioles, ants Prep tip: Mix four parts water with one part refined white sugar.
