Information on Important Bird Areas in China was compiled with the support of the World Bank using consultant trust funds from the Government of Japan. Surveys of IBAs in western China were funded by Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund (Japan) and the Sekisui Chemical Co. Ltd. (Japan). An IBA Workshop in Fuzhou was funded by the Darwin Initiative of the UK Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The Tolkien Trust, Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust and the BirdLife Asia Bird Fund provided additional support for the inventory compilation. The World Bank's Sustainable Development Office in Beijing provided significant financial support for the publication of the inventory.

3 Important Bird Areas in Tianjin City IBAs are represented on the map as circles proportional to their areas. Key: = Protected; = Partially protected; = Unprotected. All of the IBAs in Tianjin are coastal wetlands, including Beidagang Wetland Nature Reserve (CN319). Some migratory birds spend the winter in this part of China, but most of them continue their journey to visit the Yellow River and Yangtze River basins to the south. (PHOTO: WANG RUIQING)
4 IBA CODE: CN317 NAME: Qilihai Nature Reserve CRITERIA: A1 A4iii AREA: 99,000 ha COORDINATES: 39 20'N 'E ALTITUDE: 3-5 m CONSERVATION STATUS: The IBA was established as Tianjin Paleocoastal and Wetland National Nature Reserve (99,000 ha) in GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Qilihai wetland is located in Ninghe County. It used to be on the coast, but it has gradually been turned into an inland wetland by industrialization and urbanization. Qilihai Nature Reserve mainly comprises a 2,000 ha reservoir, reedbeds and scattered fishponds. THREATENED SPECIES: Grus japonensis (EN), Otis tarda (VU) IBA CODE: CN318 NAME: Tuanbowa Nature Reserve CRITERIA: A1 A4i,A4iii AREA: About 6,000 ha COORDINATES: 38 54'N 117 6'E ALTITUDE: 3-5 m CONSERVATION STATUS: Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Tuanbowa is located in Jinghai County, 24 km from downtown Tianjin. The nature reserve mainly comprises a 6,000 ha reservoir, of which 5,100 ha is open water, with agricultural land, ponds and channels at the edge of the reservoir. THREATENED SPECIES: Ciconia boyciana (EN), Anser cygnoides (EN), Grus japonensis (EN, over 40 birds in 1998), Aythya baeri (VU), Otis tarda (VU) CONGREGATORY WATERBIRDS: Grus japonensis IBA CODE: CN319 NAME: Beidagang Wetland Nature Reserve CRITERIA: A1 A4i AREA: 43,495 ha COORDINATES: 38 45'N 'E ALTITUDE: 0-3 m CONSERVATION STATUS: Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Beidagang Reservoir is located in the Dagang Area of Tianjin City, on the west coast of Bohai Bay. The circumference of the reservoir is 53.6 km, and it has an area of about 44,000 ha. The IBA also includes seasonal marshes and cultivated land near the reservoir. THREATENED SPECIES: Ciconia boyciana (EN, over 800 birds in 1999), Anser cygnoides (EN), Grus japonensis (EN) CONGREGATORY WATERBIRDS: Ciconia boyciana, Grus japonensis
5 IBA CODE: CN320 NAME: Coastal mudflat of Tianjin CRITERIA: A1 A4i AREA: 200 ha COORDINATES: 38 50'N 'E ALTITUDE: Sea-level CONSERVATION STATUS: Unprotected GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The main habitat in the IBA is coastal inter-tidal wetlands. THREATENED SPECIES: Larus relictus (VU) CONGREGATORY WATERBIRDS: Larus relictus (3,362 birds in January 2004), Limosa limosa (c.18,000 birds in April 2005), Tringa stagnatilis (count of 12,000 birds in 2005)
