Photo by Ben Lascelles Identification of Marine Important Bird Areas in Asia Global Waterbird Flyway Workshp October 20, 2011 Mayumi Sato BirdLife International Asia Division

Important Bird Area (IBA) Birds are a good indicator of environment Choosing areas that are important for conservation Based on scientific and common criteria Establish a network sharing/exchanging information Over 100 countries worldwide Influenced on designation of protected areas in EU

IBA: From Land to Ocean Conservation of Seabirds : Rapid decline in numbers of seabirds Urgent conservation action is needed Establishment of MPA : Degraded marine environment and decreased biodiversity Protected marine areas are less than 1% compared to 10% on land CBD target 10% of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) by 2020 Seabirds, as top predators, can be used as indicators as to the state of the marine environment, and identify key sites for biodiversity conservation, which can provide essential baseline information for the establishment of MPAs also for the conservation of seabirds.

Marine IBA work in 2010

GIS Analysis Seaward boundaries were determined based on reported foraging ranges breeding sites at the candidate marine IBAs. Species Max. foraging radius Roseate Tern Reference BirdLife International, The Seabird Wikispace Black-naped Tern 3 HANZAB, Vol. 3, p645 Foraging radius Rhinoceros Auklet 87 Japanese Murrelet 8 Kato, A., Watanuki, Y. and Naito, Y. (2003) The Auks: Alcidae (Bird Families of the World) Gaston, A. J. and Jones I. L. (1998), p270 Centre of the breeding colony

Other ways for Marine IBA identification Hotspot by boat survey Habitat modeling Hotspot by tracking Marine IBA of species A Species B, C, and D Final Marine IBA

1 st Asian marine IBA workshop International collaboration is required to achieve effective conservation Participating countries: Japan (Wild Bird Society Japan), Russia (Birds Russia), Philippines (Haribon Foundation), Hong Kong (Hong Kong Birdwatching Society), Indonesia (Burung Indonesia), Malaysia (Malaysian Nature Society), Myanmar (BANCA), China (Zhejiang Wild Bird Society) BirdLife Asia, with kind support from Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund (KNCF), convened the first marine IBA workshop for the region in April This resulted in the established of a regional seabird plan for the first time.

Launch of marine IBA identification in Japan Following the workshop BirdLife Partners have begun to establish national marine IBA programmes. In Japan, BirdLife Partner, WBSJ, leads the way for the region with a model project. 167 terrestrial IBA sites have so far been identified by WBSJ 49 of these are identified as candidate marine IBAs as they contain breeding seabirds Need to identify important marine areas around breeding sites Need to identify pelagic marine areas important for foraging and migration routes

Preliminary Results: Black-naped Tern Terrestrial IBAs with breeding seabirds Proposed marine IBAs based on foraging ranges Centre of the breeding colony Photos by M. Yamashiro Ref. Mizutani and Kono (2007)

Preliminary Results: Roseate Tern Terrestrial IBAs Proposed marine IBAs Centre of the breeding colony Photos by M. Yamashiro Ref. Mizutani and Kono (2007)

Preliminary Results: Rhinoceros Auklet Terrestrial IBAs Proposed marine IBAs Centre of the breeding colony Photos by Fukutaro Ref. Watanuki, Aotsuka and Terasawa (1986)

Preliminary Results: Japanese Murrelet Terrestrial IBAs Proposed marine IBAs Centre of the breeding colony Photos by Suzuki Ref. Hasegawa (1987), Carter et al. (2002), WBSJ (2010)

Further Work 1. These foraging radii should be reviewed with expert opinions to establish a consistent method to determine a foraging radius suitable for each species. 2. Should determine final marine IBAs for these four species by analyzing tracking data, modeling distributions and seeking expert opinion and overlaying all information available. 3. Marine IBAs for other seabird species not yet covered should be identified. 4. Need to continue to improve methods for identification and delimitation of marine IBAs. 5. Establishment of MPAs should be promoted by providing information on marine IBAs to relevant stakeholders.

Thank you very much! For further information please contact:
