Tell em what you re gonna tell em! Blind Counts (AM & PM) IR Camera Driving (Mobile) Helicopter (AM & PM) Spotlight (Traditional & Distance Sampling) Walking (Hahn) These techniques were tested under reasonably controlled conditions over a three year period it didn t go well!
Objectives Reliability (Accuracy and Precision) of Deer Census Techniques For Small Acreages ( 500 acres): Abundance Herd Composition Estimates Simulated common landowner practices Techniques Bait Game Fence Scale Temporal Known number of deer
Herd Establishment Deer captured in Central Texas Translocated to West Pasture Target: 1 Deer to 6.9 acres Buck to doe ratio of 1:2

Conclusions No abundance estimator demonstrated superior accuracy and precision across the 3 years in this study. AM blind surveys were least biased for determining sex ratios. Bait was effective in increasing detectability (Blind, IR- Camera). Cameras were useful in detection of branch-antlered deer (98%). 7 days is sufficient Multiple counts in Blind estimates inflated bias Observer error did not affect reliability on blind surveys
Conclusions Hybrid surveys may be more reliable IR Camera and Blind Surveys Further exploration of these and other data required for reliable estimates of abundance in this context Recognize limitations of these estimators Proceed with caution in this context Management decisions should consult all available resources Reliability of techniques at larger scales (e.g. 1,000 acres) should be investigated.
