2 TRIP DIARY Tour Leader: Fernando Enrique with Malcolm Chettleburgh, Richard Daley, John & Hazel Millington, Malcolm & Jemma Wyllie and Ko Yamamoto. There were a number of highlights on the trip: a breeding pair of Spanish Imperial Eagle chasing a Griffon Vulture; an Eagle Owl sitting on the nest; excellent views of displaying male Great Bustard; hundreds of raptors breeding at Peña Falcon; 25+ Montagu s Harrier displaying and calling around the colony; Lesser Kestrel colony from Trujillo s castle; huge flocks of herons and Glossy Ibis breeding at Centro Jose Antonio Valverde; pluss many others. Friday 4th April The group met up at Madrid airport then drove to Extremadura, stopping for a quick lunch at a motorway restaurant, where we enjoyed some nice local food. After this stop and in our way to Arrocampo we saw several raptors, including Griffon and Black Vulture, Montagu's Harrier and Short-toed Eagle. Despite the bad weather, with light rain and strong winds, our stop at Arrocampo was quite productive. We managed to get good views of several Purple Herons and Purple Swamphens on the reedbeds and we picked up some passerines among the vegetation, including Savi's Warbler, Reed Warbler and Penduline Tit. Even with the windy conditions the air was full of Black and Red Kites as well as Lesser Kestrels looking for food. Finally we arrived at our lovely hotel just outside of Torrejón El Rubio, a small village less than five miles away from Monfragüe National Park. An excellent headquarters for our next four days of birdwatching in the area. Saturday 5th April After an excellent breakfast, we left our hotel and we headed towards the plains between Trujillo and Caceres. The weather forecast for the morning wasn't very promising, with very cold temperatures and rain. Although the weather conditions weren't optimal, we managed to find some good birds such as Iberian Grey and Woodchat Shrikes, Sardinian Warbler, Common Cuckoo and Iberian (Azure-winged) Magpie. And we enjoyed great views on several nesting White Storks. However, after a couple of hours the weather improved dramatically, the sun came out and suddenly all the birds became active. There were Corn Buntings, Hoopoes and Zitting Cisticolas singing everywhere, and the air was full of raptors taking advantage of the thermals created by the new sunny conditions. Dozens of Griffon and Black Vultures soared above our heads, along with Egyptian Vultures, Booted Eagles and Red Kites. As we arrived at the steppe areas around Santa Marta de Magasca, one of the best places for grassland birds in Spain, we found several small groups of Great Bustards; we enjoyed excellent views of a male displaying as we viewed from the highest point in the area. Other species in these well-preserved plains were Little Bustard, Montagu's Harrier, Calandra Lark and huge flocks of Spanish Sparrows. 2 Limosa Holidays limosaholidays.co.uk

3 Driving through a beautiful Mediterranean forest, we found a second-year Golden Eagle and a breeding pair of Bonelli's Eagle within five minutes of arriving at the cliffs. On our way to our hotel we saw at least two more flocks of Great Bustards, a nice way to end our first full day in Extremadura. Sunday 6th April After another excellent breakfast and with a much more promising weather forecast ahead of us, we visited Monfragüe National Park, probably the place with the highest density of breeding raptors in Europe. For example, there are more than 600 pairs of Griffon Vulture and this area holds the largest Black Vulture colony on Earth, with over 300 pairs. Our first stop at Peña Falcon produced hundreds of Griffon Vultures, Egyptian Vulture, Black Stork, and Peregrine Falcon, while Rock Bunting, Blue Rock Thrush, Black Redstart, Serin, Crag Martin, Common and Pallid Swifts and Red-rumped Swallows all flew overhead or even below us as we looked down from the viewpoint. Black Kites were watched fishing and mating. We also found a Wren s nest in a crevice close to the car park. The second stop was equally good: at Portilla del Tietar we had one of the highlight of trip, as we watched two Spanish Imperial Eagles attacking a Griffon Vulture in midair. Another great moment were the amazing views we had of a female Eagle Owl sitting on the nest, where we saw at least two small chicks. We picked up some interesting species on the way back to the hotel, like Western Orphean Warbler, Western Subalpine Warbler, flocks of Iberian Magpies and Kingfisher. Other interesting sightings were a very cooperative Red Deer, the endemic Bosca's Newt and several species of dragonflies. Monday 7th April On our last full day in Extremadura, we left the hotel early in the morning and we headed south towards an old road west of Trujillo. Our main targets here were the Stone-curlew and both species of sandgrouse. The first half of this road goes through a very well-preserved Holm Oak forest, where we found interesting species such as Wood Lark, Western Orphean Warbler, Woodchat Shrike and Thekla Lark. After a few miles, the landscape became more and more open and it was here that we heard the first Pin-tailed Sandgrouse of the trip flying above us - a nice flock of five birds that landed a few hundred yards in front of us. From a high point in the area we scanned the plains around us and in less than 20 minutes we picked up Great and Little Bustards, Pin-tailed and Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Stone-curlew and Short-toed Larks among many other steppe birds. It had been an incredible morning! We headed back to Trujillo and had lunch at Plaza Mayor, surrounded by the beautiful church and castle of Trujillo. The views from top of the castle were simply outstanding and the show was even better thanks to the Lesser Kestrel colony, providing excellent photographic opportunities. We spent the last few hours back at Peña Falcón, in the National Park, enjoying again the unbelievable number of Griffon Vultures and other raptors in the area. As the light faded, we took in the evening chorus of passerines like Short-toed Treecreepers, Rock Buntings, Blue Rock Thrush and Black Redstarts. 3 Limosa Holidays limosaholidays.co.uk

4 Tuesday 8th April After a short early morning walk around the hotel, where we found Bee-eaters, Wood Lark, Thekla Lark and Woodchat Shrike, we said farewell to the staff at Hospederia Parque Natural de Monfragüe. We headed south towards Coto de Doñana, with great expectations as it is one of the most important national parks in Spain, and arguably one the best places in Europe for birds. During our drive along the motorway, we stopped at the Alange reservoir, one of the largest reservoirs in Spain, whose dam holds the biggest Alpine Swift colony in Extremadura, with several hundred pairs. In the rocky areas around the dam we found one of our main target species, the Black Wheatear, not an easy species to find anywhere in Spain. This short stop was very productive for other species too, with two Bonelli's Eagles, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting and Gull-billed Tern around or over the reservoir. After a long day on the road, we finally arrived at our destination, where we stopped for an hour at Dehesa de Abajo, a beautiful lagoon surrounded by a wild olive-tree forest that holds the largest White Stork colony in Europe. Here we picked up a few very interesting species such as Red-knobbed Coot, Red-crested Pochard, Black-necked Grebe, Squacco Heron, Spoonbill and Glossy Ibis among many others. Wednesday 9th April Our first full day at Coto Doñana included an early morning visit to Dehesa de Abajo lagoon, where, besides the species that we found the previous day, we picked up several new birds for the trip: Night Heron, Osprey, several species of ducks, lots of waders including Avocet, Black-winged Stilt and Ruff, Whiskered and Black Terns and the noisy Great Reed Warbler. After such a good morning, we took a lovely lunch at Isla Mayor, where we enjoyed some of the local specialties. Everybody agreed that this was the best lunch of the trip. Later, we set off to travel along and explore the dusty tracks that lead to the very distant Jose Antonio Valverde visitor centre (JAV). A dusty, parched and pretty much empty landscape greeted us on the southern edge of the huge Coto Doñana National Park. The lack of winter rains this year has had an enormous impact on the wildlife and it had very few birds, save most of the lark species and some waders along the deepest channels with a little bit of water. JAV is the only place that holds water all-year round. Thus, the heron colony was full of birds with several hundred pairs of Glossy Ibis, Cattle and Little Egrets, plus Squacco, Night and Purple Herons. Along the Corredor Verde we found the only Little Bittern of the trip, while on the way back to our hotel we had great views of a Lesser Short-toed Lark flock feeding on the trail. Thursday 10th April During our last full day out in the field, we visited the wetlands around El Rocío, including La Rocina and El Acebrón, one of the few places with water in this dry year. As soon as we arrived we found flocks of Greater Flamingos, Spoonbills, Glossy Ibis, Pintail, Shoveler and a good selection of waders, including several Wood Sandpipers, Little Stint, Black-tailed Godwit and Greenshank. We spent a couple of hours enjoying the beautiful view from the main hide at the southern corner of the lagoon, before heading towards La Rocina. Although, the wetland birds were less abundant than at El Rocío, we picked up a few small bird species in the mixed woodlands 4 Limosa Holidays limosaholidays.co.uk

5 around the lagoon. These included many new birds for the trip, like Wood Warbler, Iberian Chiffchaff and Pied Flycatcher, along with other hard-to-find species like Savi s and Great Reed Warblers. After another excellent lunch at El Rocío, we moved to the woodland area around El Acebron, looking for some forest species, but on the way there we stopped a couple of times in search of Dartford Warbler. We found a couple of males singing, providing amazing views for some people in the group. Here we found several Northern Wheatears, Common Whitethroat and Iberian Lynx footprints. The walk around El Acebron wasn t as productive as we had hoped, due to the high temperatures. So after a long day in the field we headed back to our hotel for our last sumptuous dinner. Friday 11th April Our last morning walk around the hotel, before heading to Jerez airport, was quite productive, with good bird activity. We added Iberian Green Woodpecker to our list and enjoyed the morning chorus of passerines like Sardinian Warblers, Cetti s Warbler, Nightingale, Serin or Short-toed Treecreeper. After this short walk we packed up everything and we drove to Jerez. Along the motorway we saw several flocks of Collared Pratincole and a few Montagu s Harriers as well. It had been a great tour, with lots of amazing sights and funny moments. I really enjoyed every day of this trip and I hope to meet up with you all on some other tour.
