1 Summary Report On Summer Bird Count (9 th to 16 th April 2017) Under the Common Bird Monitoring Programme of the Bmbay Natural History Society Recommended Citation Dudhe, N., Kasambe, R., and Rane, H. (2017) Report of the Summer bird count April-2017 under the Common Bird Monitoring Programme. Indian Bird Conservation Network and Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai. Pp.28. 1
2 Introduction Common Bird Monitoring is a Citizen Science Programme. Objectives of the programme are to involve more and more people to observe birds which are in their backyard or where they visit regularly. There are several existing good initiatives where people are recording birds. We need to be able to accurately monitor trends in common birds. Consequently, we have starting a Common Bird Monitoring Programme in India. The bird count will be organized three times in a year. Each site should be surveyed thrice a year; it must cover monsoon (September), winter (January) and summer (April). Counts should ideally start around 7 a.m., and not later than 9 a.m. This summer, bird count was held from 9 th - 16 th April Grids were plotted on the map of Maharashtra with the help of GIS software. The grids were distributed amongst all birdwatcher across Maharashtra. The size of each gird was 2X2 km. Area. A checklist was provided on the IBCN website and the participants were requested to download and record their sightings in the checklist. The complete list of all species spotted (ideally observed by individuals) was submitted through by each participant or team. The participants responded very well with the count of birds across Maharashtra. This Common Bird Monitoring is a Citizen Science initiative, which is an association of many organizations and are partners in this programme. It was also suggested to the participants that similar surveys has to be conducted throughout the year in this place/grid for longer durations to make it more meaningful. We also requested that the Counts will be more productive at dawn/during sunrise (7 to 9 am), as birds are generally quiet and inactive during the middle of the day. Citizen Science is the best way to collect data on a nation-wide scale. We requested bird watchers to participate in this Summer Bird Count through media, social networking sites, Google groups and other modes of communications. 2
3 Results The count concluded with a record of birds. Observations were recorded by birdwatchers in 13 districts of Maharashtra. These include Nagpur, Kolhapur, Dhule, Pune, Jalgaon, Mumbai, Yawatmal, Washim, Amravati, Bhandara, Sindhudurg, Latur and Usmanabad. A total of 189 species were recorded through 56 checklists (which were received). Out of the total count Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) was recorded the highest count among all species with 1518 sightings followed by Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) 1510 sightings, House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) 1275 sightings, Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) 1072 sightings, House Crow (Corvus splendens) 689 sightings, Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis ) 637 sightings, and Laughing Dove (Little Brown Dove) Streptopelia senegalensis 636 sightings.
