1 Marine Notice No. 32 of 2005 Last updated 18/11/2013 To all Owners, Agents, Operators, Masters, Fishing Skippers, National Maritime College, National Fishery Training Centres, Approved Training Providers and to all Fishermen and Seafarers Changes in procedures in relation to eyesight testing of candidates for examination for a Fishing Vessel Deck Officer Certificate of Competency Following a review of the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examinations) Regulations, all eyesight testing to fulfil the requirements for the above examinations will be conducted by a panel of Approved Doctors rather than by Departmental officials. These arrangements will become effective from 12 th December Fishermen who sit for a Fishing Vessel Deck Officer Certificate of Competency are required to successfully pass an eyesight test. The eyesight standards required are equitable to that of Masters, Deck Officers and Ratings required to undertake lookout duties. The eyesight test must be carried out by an Approved Doctor (details of which are provided in Annex A of this Notice) and the appropriate certificate should be issued. There is a maximum fee of for each eyesight test and an additional if confirmatory colour vision testing is required. The Approved Doctor will advise on the procedure required should colour vision confirmatory testing be needed (details are provided in Annex B of this Notice). The Department s publication Examinations for Certificate of Competency for Fishing Vessels, Deck Officer Requirements is amended by Marine Notice No. 33 of 2005, to take account of the changes in procedures.
