1 2011 Data Report

2 Introduction T he spring of 2011 was the fifth year Citizen Science trained high school students conducted habitat characterization and presence/ absence species surveys on seven Seattle-area beaches: Carkeek Park, Golden Gardens, Discovery Park, South Alki Beach (Richey Viewpoint), Schmitz Memorial (Me- Kwa-Mooks), Lincoln Park and Seahurst Park. Schools included: Ballard, West Seattle, Garfield, Ingraham, Highline, Aviation, and the Puget Sound Skills Center/ Environmental and Marine Program. Added this year were two Mukilteo area beaches, one near the north end of Lighthouse Point and another a half-mile north of the Mukilteo Ferry, as well as the beach at Dumas Bay in Federal Way and Rockaway Beach on Bainbridge Island. The Mukilteo beaches were surveyed by Glacier Peak High School and Archbishop Thomas Murphy High School, and Dumas Bay was monitored by Auburn High School. Bainbridge High School students surveyed Rockaway Beach on Bainbridge Island. In addition to these eleven beaches, two tribal schools participated in the Citizen Science program and monitored their tribal beaches in Suquamish Early College High School students conducted habitat characterization, presence/absence surveys, and oyster sampling at the beach located at the Suquamish High School and Museum. Students also conducted a clam sampling survey at Sigo Beach in Bremerton. Muckleshoot Tribal High School students performed surveys on a beach owned by the tribe near the north end of Vashon Island. Data are included for all new beaches monitored in Habitat characterization included slope, substrate, and habitat features within 3m x 4m plots along a transect line running from the backshore to -2.0ft (MLLW) tidal level. Surveyors recorded presence/ absence of 24 selected species (or groups of species) found within four ¼m2 quadrats randomly placed within the same 3m x 4m plots. The Aquarium intends to continue these surveys with Citizen Science students for another 10 years to identify and document potential trends along the beaches. The Seattle Aquarium wishes to acknowledge the partnership of the following with data sharing and database management: WSU/Island County Beach Watchers, King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, Seattle Public Utilities Science Team, and the University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories. Summary Findings F or ease of graphing, the 24 target species (or groups) were pooled together into 12 categories for each beach. For each category found on each beach each year, a column shows the number of quadrats in which that category was found. The Seattle Aquarium cautions against comparing observations between beaches due to natural variables between sites such as slope, substrate, wave exposure, freshwater runoff, etc. Our intent is to document potential year to year changes within each beach. The most commonly seen category at all seven beaches each year were macroflora (algae and eelgrass). Faunal categories seen in one-quarter to one-third of all quadrats per beach included barnacles, snails and limpets, with crabs and chitons frequently seen as well. Occasionally sea anemones, isopods, sea stars, nudibranchs (sea slugs), blue mussels and fishes were found. The most noticeable year-to year differences include fewer blue mussels at four beaches and fewer snails observed at three sites. The presence of macroflora, anemones, crabs, barnacles, and limpets changed in 2009 at three or more locations. Variations between the years may be due to changes in harvesting, pressure by beachgoers, difference in timing of the surveys, different numbers of sampling plots at some beaches, and natural ecological variability. Further Information F or further information on Citizen Science data and full database access, or to inquire about participating as a high school in the program, contact Citizen Science Project Manager Karen Matsumoto at k.matsumoto@seattleaquarium.org or We are not currently accepting additional schools, but will keep your contact information on a waiting list.
