2 is a sun protection glass from GUARDIAN which is manufactured using the magnetron technique. The coating is suited for hardening, bending, laminating and may be silkscreen printed or enamelled.

3 The different types, Plus, Silver are available on clear float glass as clear and on tinted float glass as green. Standard sizes are jumbos (3,21 m x 6,00 m) or split sizes. Standard thicknesses are 4, 5, 6 und 8 mm; other thicknesses or laminated on request. The following information will help you to use properly. Identifying the coated side It is important to always be aware of which side of the glass is coated. It is possible to identify the coating with a detector (ohmmeter) because of the electrically conductive functional layer (Fig. 1). Conditions which can affect non-coated glass can also have an adverse effect on SUN-GUARD. Store in an area where the glass is protected from the weather elements. Outdoor storage of any glass product must be avoided. can be handled and transported with the normal tools. If you are using suction cups on the coated side, they should be clean. Lubricants (grease) or oil may lead to residues which are very difficult to remove. In order to prevent damage to the coating as a result of scratches, avoid contact with hard objects (such as glass splinters, glass edges, metallic parts, sand particles, etc.) Always use a separator material between individual panes of glass or separate the glass with card board tabs or cork type seperators. Glass to glass contact must be avoided. Do not glue anything or write on the coated side. Cutting may be cut like normal glass. However, there may be increased wear and tear on the cutting wheels as a result of the hardness of the coating. We recommend that you use wheels at an obtuse cutting angle. In order to prevent permanent damage to the coating from scratches (glass splinters or dirt on the cutting table), the coating should always be pointing upwards (away from the cutting table). No cutting oil should remain on the coating since this could make cleaning the panes extremely difficult. We recommend slightly volatile cutting oils. There should be a clean cut to minimise the danger of a fracture as a result of thermal influences. It is not necessary to remove the coating on the edges. Cleaning You may clean in the same fashion as glass. If you use detergents, it is important that they are ph-neutral and free of abrasives. may be washed in all normal washing machines which are suitable for the production of insulated glass and coated glasses. We recommend that you check the machine before work. The following tests are especially important: hardness and cleanliness (e.g., lime deposits) on the brushes used adjusting the brushes (recommendation of the washer manufacturer) checking the entire washing machine for cleanliness since the coating could be destroyed by dirt getting into it (e.g., glass splinters, sand, lubricants) or it could be impaired in its quality.

4 Heat treatment When processing by heat treatment it is essential to be in mind that the heat reflection properties of the coating counteract warming up by radiation. During processing, there is a temperature difference between the coated top side and the glass side. Several tests will reveal the optimal oven parameter but in general it is advisable to apply lower temperatures and a longer time cycle than compared to clear float glass of the same thickness. Using a tempering furnace with convection current the coating will not be a handicap. The coating must always be on the side which is away from the rollers in order to avoid damage or the rollers leaving imprints. Before the is hardened, there may not be any soiling (such as finger prints, oil, water residues) or scratches on the coating since they are irreversible after firing up. For this reason, after washing you may only touch the coating after washing with suitable clean gloves. If an automatic machine grinds the edges, it is important to ensure that the coating is not damaged by glass dust accumulating. If the glass panes are intended for a glazing project, ensure that all of the panes are in the same position during firing up as the position in which they will be installed. Bending In general, it is possible to bend glasses coated with. If an object is planned with bent, it is important to make bending experiments ahead of time. GUARDIAN will be glad to support you with technical personel. Slight colour modifications can appear during tempering and bending. Laminating can be produced as composite glass with PVB vinyl interlayer (foil) or as a casting resin. There are two types for each model: the coating inwards in position 4 (Fig. 2b) is in contact with the PVB-foil or casting resin in position 2 (Fig. 2a) glass exterior interior exterior interior foil Abb. 2a Abb. 2b When the coating is laminated in position 2, it may be necessary to vary the process parameters of the composite glass manufacturer in order to achieve optimum bonding between the coating and the PVB-foil. Because of the large number of types of casting resin, we recommend a compatibility test or consulting with GUARDIAN for using the coating in position 2. There may be slight differences in colour between on composite glass and on normal floating glass. Because of the increased energy resorption, we recommend to perform a thermal analysis.

5 Enamelled silkscreen for spanderels Decorative coating Decorative screen printing are lines, points, etc. which are applied to the coating. The optical quality is excellent although the adhesion is not as good as to a non coated glass substrate but is sufficient for most applications. Do not glue anything on the enamelling without making compatibility tests. Parapet wall glazing It is possible to make screen printing enamelling on the whole surface of if nothing is to be glued between the enamelled and other objects. If there is something which is supposed to be glued on (for instance, structural glazing or gluing insulation materials), a compatibility test should be made. This test is necessary for each structural glazing project! Another possibility is glueing on the edge without enamel (see Fig. 3). enamel Fig. 3 Enamelling the edge It is possible to enamel in order to cover up construction elements in the edge area. Enamelling the edge with structural glazing provides protection against UV radiation, which makes it possible to use sealing materials (such as Thiokol) which are sealed against gases such as Argon and Krypton. This makes it possible to significantly improve the u-value of the glazing enamel exterior interior sealing material Fig. 4 Adhesion of paints or ceramic coatings to the coated surface may not be as strong as the sealing material in direct contact with glass or the coated surface. A compatibility test must be made here between the sealing materials and the enamelling. The test is necessary for each project! Another alternative is to enamel the edges on uncoated glass. The risk of thermal breakage Thermal fracture may be caused by a number of influences. The main factors are: the conditition of the edges of the glass (shrinkage, chipping) the model and material of the frame (quick heat dissipation) the energy absorption of the glass (strong heat up) shade (heavy shadow) from building edges, trees, half-open blinds (interior and exterior), the building s orientation, etc.) Glass is a poor heat conductor and exhibits brittle expansion-contraction behaviour. Because of the combination of all or some of these factors, there may be a build up of mechanical tension within a pane as a result of temperature differences.

6 If this tension exceeds a critical value, there will be a fracture. It is possible to eliminate the possibility of a thermal breakage by heat treatment (precompressing the glass) for all practical purposes. In any event, it is advisable to make a thermal analysis of the project to be glazed before using. If the glazing has an energy absorbtion of 65 % or more, GUARDIAN recommends tempering or heat-strengthening (partially precompressed) for products. You may find the exact values for energy absorbtion in our performance data sheet. The coated surface should always be in position 2 (towards the interior of the building - Fig.5). Any monolithic application must be considered as an exception and must be discussed with GUARDIAN in every specific case exterior interior sealing material Fig. 5 Quality features of coated glass Defects on coated glass are characterized by the European Standard of 1993 pren 1096/1. In examination of reflection the observer regards upon the outside of the glazing. Examining transmission is effected outwardly from the inside. In order to characterize defects it is necessary to keep a distance of min. 3 m between the observer and the coated glass (see Fig. 6). Daylight - an evenly covered sky without direct sunlight- should be used as light source. Stains and Defects in Homogeinity These defects are acceptable if an unbiased observer does not regard coating distinctions inside a lite or between neighbouring lites as disturbing.

7 Spot - shaped Defects Defects of all kinds larger than 3 mm are inadmissible. Seperate defects measuring 2-3 mm are acceptable if the number of defects does not exceed one per square meter. The concentration of small defects is only admissible in areas outside the normal field of vision. Line - shaped Defects Scratches longer than 75 mm are inadmissible in the center of a lite. Scratches in the edge area (10% of lenght and width) are acceptable if located 50 mm distant from each other.
