September 2nd (Saturday) is the First Saturday Rosary at St. Bridget s Church. The Rosary plays a central role in the devotions that the Knights practice. Please remember to attend the 1 st Saturday Mass (at 9:00 AM) and Rosary. If you have any questions, please contact Committee Chairman Br. John Galvin at The Pancake Breakfast at St. Joan of Arc on the third Sunday has been put on hold for the time being. I am currently in discussion with St. Joan of Arc for some future activities. As information comes available I will let you know. The Past Grand Knight (PGK) steak dinner originally set for September 9th is being rescheduled. Once the new schedule is set I will pass on the information. On September 22nd through 24th is the Life is Beautiful Festival. The Knights may support the staff (and make some money) by selling lunches to the event staff. On September 29th the Council will sponsor a hole at the Knights of Columbus Meals on Wheels Golf Tournament. The event will take place at the Angel Park Golf Course. The council will be supplying water, sodas and beer. All proceeds go to Catholic Charities to support Meals on Wheels. Participants in the Golf Tournament will pay $1 00. There will be a lunch and dinner included. The tournament has a shotgun start and there will be prizes. Please contact me at if you need further information. Business Meeting - 7:30pm. Officers 6:30 pm. 365 Club: Bring your loose change to the September meeting. Every month we collect change (or dollars) for the 365 club. Remember this is a state wide fund created to help a brother Knight in need. Father McGivney Guild Join at the meeting, it is totally free and you get a monthly newsletter. There is no cost. Grand Knight's Message (continued) Dinner will be held at Markich Hall. I will provide details as they become available. On December 1 st and 2nd the Knights Midyear Meeting will take place at Markich Hall. St. Bridget s Council is the host of the event. No change to this event. On December 1 6th we are planning a Children s Christmas Party. We are coordinating with Metro and the Life is Beautiful people. More details will be forthcoming. No change to this event yet. At the 1 35th Annual Supreme Convention in Missouri a new set of regalia was introduced for the 4th Degree. The plumed caps and capes are gone! Supreme made the change in order to attract younger Knights into the 4th Degree. See article later in the newsletter. Do you shop online at Amazon? A Little Humor... A man who loved the nightlife was proudly showing off his new apartment to a friend late one night, the man led the way to his bedroom, where there was a big brass gong. What s that big brass gong for? asked the friend. It s not a gong. It s a talking clock, the man replied. A talking clock? How s it work? Watch, said the man. He picked up a hammer, gave the gong an ear-shattering pound and stepped back. Someone on the other side of the wall screamed, Hey, you jerk! It s three in the morning! Page 3

4 New 4th Degree Uniform The classic ceremonial hats and capes of Fourth Degree members of the Knights of Columbus that you may have seen at Mass or at parish events will now be getting a major alteration. This fraternal year, we make another historic change. The Board of Directors has decided that the time is right for a modernization of the Fourth Degree uniform, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus Carl Anderson announced on Tuesday at the Knights 1 35th annual international convention in St. Louis, Missouri. The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic men s organization with over 1.9 million members worldwide. The organization promotes four virtues of fraternity, unity, charity, and solidarity among its members. (The Knights of Columbus are among Crux s principal sponsors.) The Fourth Degree uniform is worn by those who have reached the highest levels of the Knights of Columbus, are at least 1 8 years of age and have been a Third Degree member in good standing. Each degree is associated with one of the four virtues of the Knights, with patriotism being associated with the Fourth Degree. Members of the Fourth Degree serve in honor guards for liturgical processions or in color guards at ceremonial events, hence the distinctive nature of their uniform. The uniform of the Fourth Degree has changed throughout the history of the Knights, as previous versions included a top hat and a tuxedo with tails. However, it has remained relatively the same since a plumed chapeau which can be worn with plumes of different recognized colors, a tuxedo, a cape, and a ceremonial sword. Now, however, the Knights will be leaving behind the classic uniform for a modernized version, a blue blazer with the Fourth Degree emblem and dark gray slacks, a blue Fourth Degree tie, and a beret. Vice Supreme Masters processed into Mass on Tuesday at the convention wearing the new uniform. Anderson then officially announced the change while delivering the annual report of the Supreme Knight. The board of directors for the Knights decided for the change, Anderson said, to modernize the dress uniform that is typically worn at ceremonial or solemn events. On a limited basis, assemblies may choose to continue using the traditional cape and chapeau for color corps at public events and for honor guards in liturgical processions, Anderson said on Tuesday. However, the preferred dress for the Fourth Degree - including color corps and honor guards - is now the new uniform of jacket and beret. Page 4
