The class was reserved for attendance by our employees and International Distributors. Even with a few last minute cancellations due to travel restrictions the class was a great success and representatives from ACAL Italia, Aries ( Spain ), BLM Synergie ( Russia ) and Preditest ( Czech Republic ) made rapid progress covering all major applications. Three of the orders were from University facilities. A notable order was from the Israeli government which included a Quattro based system with the SignalCalc Acoustics Analysis package. SignalCalc Literature Update The RotorDynamics and Balancing applications which have been discussed in previous issues of the Insider now have new datasheets describing their capabilities. ACE running on Quattro continues to shine A few months ago the SignalCalc ACE powered by Quattro was put to the test as a Rotating Machinery analysis System by doing RPM analysis tests at Schenck RoTec in Darmstadt, Germany. Having previously observed successful results with the Abacus hardware, the user was now keen to determine whether the little Quattro could handle the high speed, rapid ramp tests required to evaluate automotive turbochargers. 3 And a waterfall plot that identified various resonant conditions in the operating speed range We were pleased to be informed that the SignalCalc ACE powered by Quattro was the only system delivering fast and accurate results and with minimal effort. Our positive experience at RoTec gave us the ammunition we needed to aggressively pursue the Quattro sale at BorgWarner Turbo Systems which was received in December. SignalStar Vibration Control Systems Sales Highlights Barry Controls ( California, USA ) replaced an obsolete Spectral Dynamics Puma system with a 16 channel Vector System Johnson Controls ( Actidyn, France ) purchased a complete turnkey vibration test system with a 16 channel Vector and a GW-V3544/DSA4-32K 8000 lbf (35.6 kn) Vibration Test System ITENE ( Aries, Spain ) purchased a 4 channel Scalar system with all major software packages to be used for transportation and package testing (3 of 9)2/28/2006 2:40:34 AM

4 SignalStar Scalar SignalStar Scalar is a cost effective single shaker vibration control system. The system is scalable and flexible, addressing a wide range of vibration testing applications. Based on the new Abacus Lite hardware, Scalar can be configured from 4 to 8 input channels with or without COLA. The compact scalar control hardware system complements the software with high accuracy, wide dynamic range, and powerful DSP architecture optimized for closed loop shaker control. We shipped a dozen systems already. For demo purposes you can run the Scalar software on your Abacus hardware. New Controller Features Enhanced Graph Annotation Annotation added to graphs may now be docked in the margins of the graphs. Just drag an annotation or legend to the top, bottom, left or right margin, and the graph is automatically resized to accommodate it. 5 New Reference Editor for Transient Control Using field data for transient testing often requires some manipulation of the data before it can be used as the control reference on a shaker. Transient Control has been enhanced to include an editor for this purpose. The first step is to take measured data and put it in a format that can be used by the transient control software. All Data Physics analyzer and controller binary file formats (DAT & SDB) are directly supported. Also, files can be imported from ASCII text or Universal File format. A flexible import menu allows import from a wide variety of ASCII file formats. Once the files are brought into the editor there are a number of tools to extract the desired transient from the data file and make it suitable for testing. 6 Sometimes data taken with other instruments may require resampling to be compatible with one of the Abacus sample rates. A menu in the editor allows the user to select the resample frequency from any of the Abacus sample rates. Additional processing can include filtering (low pass, high pass, band pass, band reject) and scaling of the time history. SignalForce Vibration Test Systems Sales Successes We are happy to report more shaker sales successes in the months of December and January. Just to highlight a few, Data Physics China booked orders for a lbf (70000 N) water-cooled shaker system and a GW-V lbf (1000 N) shaker; Data Physics Germany booked an order for a GW-V400HG shaker system; Actidyn in France booked orders for a DP-22260/DSA5-300K lbf (222 kn) water-cooled shaker system, a GW-V400LT 1350 lbf (6000 N) shaker system and a GW-V3500 Series 8000 lbf (35000 N) shaker system; Data Physics USA booked an order from Northern Illinois University for 2 GW-M20 Modal shakers and a GW-IV47 Inertial shaker system; Aries in Spain booked an order for our largest air-cooled shaker, the GW- V5300 Series lbf (53000 N); Enditec in South Africa booked an order for a GW-V lbf (7330 N) shaker system; Data Physics (Bharat) Pvt. Ltd. booked an order for a 3000 lbf (13000 N) shaker system. In addition to these shaker orders, we had a very active month of January for service, repairs, and replacement parts. Congratulations to all for a very strong finish to the 2005 fiscal year. Technical Notes There are many different parameters that must be considered when sizing shakers. One important thing that is often overlooked is the shaker body motion, which must be considered when the customer is planning on performing low frequency tests. To calculate this we must consider Newton s third law of motion- For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Newton s third law means that as the shaker table vibrates up and down the shaker body will react and will also try to move. The amount of movement will be determined by Newton s second law: (6 of 9)2/28/2006 2:40:34 AM

7 F=MA Where F=Force, M=Mass, and A=Acceleration Example: If the armature is producing 43,391.6N, then so is the shaker body. ( Every action has an equal and opposite reaction) If the shaker body weighs 3000kg, the acceleration on the body is: 43, = 1.48g The ratio of moving mass to body mass (177~3000) confirms acceleration applying to shaker body. If the maximum armature displacement is 50mm and the acceleration is 25g, the maximum displacement will occur at 15.76Hz. At 15.76Hz the shaker body is producing 1.48g so the shaker body will be moving by 2.96mm peak to peak. This will prevent the armature from reaching its full stroke. So, as you can see, the available displacement must be taken into consideration when the customer needs to perform low frequency tests. Shaker Operation Expansion We are pleased to announce that our shaker operations continue to expand with the opening of our Southern California facility. We have completed our transition into the new 6500 square foot facility in Corona. The address is, 548 Malloy Court Corona, CA The Southern California office will house the regular offices of Kevin McIntosh (Shaker Operations), George Pearce (Shaker Service Sales ) and Terry Weed (National and International Sales ). Anite (pronounced Aneet) has many years of experience in the areas of Sales and Marketing administration with her last position being the Sales Administrator at Frontier Semiconductor in San Jose. She has an MBA from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
