Embroidery in bright shades is applied on items to emphasize uniqueness and craftsmanship. Aside from using mainly natural components, current trends are leaning toward new ways of dyeing raw inputs. Some suppliers use tea and other herbs to come up with different coloring mixtures. These developments will continue to be the focus of most design departments over the next six months. 2 Materials & sources Among suppliers interviewed, the largest product segment is Manila hemp, accounting for nearly one-third of exports. Models primarily made of other plant-based components such as buri and nito vines comprise about 30 percent of turnover. Rattan items contribute one-fifth to foreign sales. The majority of inputs used in wicker are procured locally. Manila hemp is available throughout the Philippines but is primarily cultivated in the Bicol region and the provinces of Southern Leyte, Davao Oriental and Sulu. The component is made from the leaves of the abaca plant, which is indigenous to the Philippines. Most companies source the material directly from farmers who regularly supply their requirements. These growers also provide enterprises with bacbac or havana hemp, which is abaca s dried outer leafs heath. It is generally used for trimming. Natural inputs include seagrass, raffia palm, maguey fiber, Bicol pandan, jute, and bangkuan or Actinoscirpus grossus. Vines such as nito or Lygodium circinatum, tilob or Dicranopteris linearis, and gugo or Entada phaseoloides are primarily utilized for accents and handles. Coconut shell, palm leaf and midrib, and twigs are also adopted. All are found across the country, but mostly in agricultural regions of Luzon such as Camarines Sur and several islands in the Visayas. Bamboo can be procured nationwide. The Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau through the Bamboo Research and Development Project has established 57 hectares of plantations in the provinces of La Union, Pampanga, Capiz, Cebu, Bukidnon and Surigao del Sur. Privately owned fields in Davao, Batangas and Rizal provinces have also been designated to address local demand. Rattan is grown throughout the country. It is usually found in forests at sea level or medium elevation. Some areas that cultivate the plant are the provinces of Batanes, Laguna, Quezon, Palawan and Davao del Norte. Metal wire and twigs for frames, and cotton, vinyl and synthetic leather for lining are bought from the Divisoria market in Manila. Embellishments, including glitter, paint, wood shaving, and plastic fruits and leaves are likewise procured there. New models are normally created by teams of one to three stylists. About 10 items are released every month. Sampling time is within two weeks, depending on the availability of materials. The majority of models are entirely constructed from natural materials. Rattan, in particular, do not come in the synthetic variety. Products are assembled using labor-intensive processes. The first step is raw component preparation, which includes dyeing fibers in various colors. A basket is then weaved into specific shapes from the base up. Handles, which are usually made of smooth and durable reed or wood, are added according to design. Weaving, which takes up about 90 percent of manufacturing, is generally subcontracted to local craftsmen. Material treatment, finishing and QC are performed in-house.
