inspire / engage / transform / discover There is resilience in diversity MULTICULTURAL ARTS VICTORIA FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN 2016
cultural diversity creates a rich and varied world, which increases the range of choices and nurtures human capacities and values, and therefore is a mainspring for sustainable development for communities, peoples and nations. - UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions
Multicultural Arts Victoria Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) is Victoria s peak arts organisation promoting cultural diversity in the arts. MAV is a not for profit organisation and the only one of its kind in the State which has, over four decades, provided significant leadership for the advancement of multicultural arts locally, nationally and internationally Multicultural Arts Victoria has developed an artistic program to bridge and create a framework through which parts of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 can be delivered in practical terms. It supports and embraces the objectives of the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which states the need to create the conditions for cultures to flourish and freely interact in a mutually beneficial manner. Our annual program aims to inspire new and diverse audiences, discourse and innovative forms of expression. It cultivates diversity in the arts ecology to in turn challenge, reflect, engage, investigate, and welcome the broad range of cultures and communities that define Australia. Our Guiding Principles are: Arts+ Diversity, Equity, Social Justice, Inclusion, Partnership, Respect and Human Rights. For further information, we welcome you to contact CEO Jill Morgan AM or General Manager Andy Miller on Multicultural Arts Victoria is endorsed as a Charitable Entity under Subdivision 50-5 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 and is a registered Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) in accordance with Subdivision 30-B of the Income Tax Assessment Act

VISIBLE MUSIC Links: Visible playlist on youtube.com/user/multiculturalartsvic EPs at bandcamp.com.au/multiculturalarts WHAT IS VISIBLE? A music mentoring and support program for musicians from new refugee and emerging immigrant and Indigenous Australian communities. THE PROBLEM(S) THE PROJECT ADDRESSES: Limited accessible pathways for newly arrived CALD artists, former refugee artists (including cultural griots and artists celebrated in their country of origin) Lack of recognition and understanding of multicultural artforms due to a range of factors (language barriers, institutional and industry bias Lack of resources for newly-arrived artists Loss of exceptional new Australian talent THE PROGRAM: Mentoring Sinit Tsegay was an opportunity to look outside of my world into another. Through Sinit I was introduced to Ethiopian pop music culture, the Amharic language and got to peak inside a music community in Melbourne that is vibrant and passionate. With my guidance Sinit wrote her first song Together As One, contributed to the performance and production of her song, made a clip to accompany the mastered track and also performed it live at the end of year Visible showcase. Sinit also learnt about the importance of building an online presence and some basic music management skills. Programs like Visible are a two way learning experience, they enrich the cultural diversity in Victoria and strengthen our world class music city. - Jen Cloher, Visible mentor Key components: Builds key industry connections through mentor/mentee relationships Provides rehearsal space and professional studios for creative development Portfolio development for artists Opportunities to record, release and market product Inclusion on annual Visible compilation Presentation opportunities in professional settings ACHIEVEMENTS: Builds key industry networks Diversification of the Australian music market Preventing loss of exceptional talent in Australia Building capacity in the industry through mentorships and industry platforms Improved public exposure to our inherent diverse talent Advocacy for diversity of cultural expressions and UNESCO s 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression WHAT IS DISTINCTIVE ABOUT VISIBLE? The longest running dedicated program of its kind in Australia supporting emerging and refugee artists to build their music career in Australia Advances cultural democracy and counteracts elitism in the arts Shares skills and perspectives amongst artists Fosters innovation in Australian arts Connects the wider public with diverse networks and diaspora Builds cultural knowledge and increases cultural competence Raises Australia s reputation as a welcoming country open to engage with diverse and innovative arts Boosts the confidence of the artists 6

PRODUCERS LOUNGE Links: youtube.com/user/multiculturalartsvic EPs at bandcamp.com.au/multiculturalarts WHAT IS PRODUCERS LOUNGE? THE PROBLEM(S) THE PROJECT ADDRESSES: A mentoring program for emerging producers from new refugee and emerging immigrant and Indigenous Australian communities. Addresses: Decreased accessibility of pathways for emerging CALD producers due to language, cultural barriers and cost of entry Lack of programs, equipment, studios and mentors for CALD producers Limited networks for aspiring producers from CALD backgrounds THE PROGRAM: Complements the growing number of performers in the music industry by strengthening the number of professionally trained producers by providing a crucial mentoring program for emerging producers from diverse pathways. Producers Lounge is unique because unlike other programs, the producers get hands on experience working to develop the artist s ideas and vision into music. As a producer, the artist relies on you to develop their vision and this can be really difficult if you don t already have an established network of people to bounce ideas off this program helps to build these networks and connections. Producers Lounge also gives the emerging producers the opportunity to learn new skills they may not already have and understand how to use their existing techniques to enhance their quality of work. Mohamed Komba (aka MC MoMO of Diafrix), Producers Lounge Mentor Key components: Hands-on experience working with an artist to develop their vision into music Builds key industry networks through mentor relationships Provides rehearsal space and professional studios for creative development Develops artist profiles through professional photography and copywriting Opportunities to record, release and market an EP Inclusion in MAV s annual Producers Lounge album and in events ACHIEVEMENTS: Extending diversity in the Australian music market Broadening access to new cultural product Strengthening the number of professionally trained producers for musicians Building capacity in the industry through mentors and industry platforms Advocacy for diversity of cultural expressions and UNESCO s 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression WHAT IS DISTINCTIVE ABOUT PRODUCERS LOUNGE? One of the only dedicated programs in Australia supporting emerging and refugee producers Develops cultural democracy and counteracts elitism in the arts Shares different perspectives that foster innovation in Australia s arts landscape Connects the wider public with diverse networks and diaspora Builds cultural knowledge and increases cultural competence 8

REMASTERED MYTHS Links: youtube.com/user/multiculturalartsvic EPs at bandcamp.com.au/multiculturalarts WHAT IS REMASTERED MYTHS? ReMastered Myths brings together artists from Melbourne s diverse communities with established contemporary musicians to spark new dynamic national collaborations, highlight rare and under-represented musical styles, and develop eclectic new genres. THE PROBLEM(S) THE PROJECT ADDRESSES: Addresses: Under-representation of diverse music styles in Australia Limited access and recognition for CALD musicians due industry inequity Limited industry networks for CALD musicians Few opportunities for cross-cultural experimentation Lack of capacity (time/resources/space) for CALD musicians to innovate Limited promotional and presentation platforms for innovative new styles THE PROGRAM: Highlights rare and under-represented musical styles and forges cross-cultural and intercultural exchange of musical styles and innovation for a richer and representative Australian sound. ReMastered Myths brings together some of Australia s newest talent alongside leading figures in Australia s music scene in an annual series of creative development workshops with multiple performance outcomes. Apart from the excitement of creating a dynamic synergy together, their partnership has already left enriching benefits for both parties. They reminded me how beautiful and complicated Persian music is, Payne laughs. All my life I only knew Persian pop music. It's been absolutely refreshing. I'm learning lots about the classical music and its structure, and I guess these guys are learning what drum machines can do! - Emerging Sounds, feature in The Music by Ching Pei Koo, Key components: Develops new work that highlights rare and under-represented musical styles and forges new cultural connections and musical innovations Provides rehearsal space and professional studios for creative development and recording of new material Portfolio development for artists Opportunities to record, release and market new cultural product Exposure on MAV s annual ReMastered Myths album and major events Presentations at major events ACHIEVEMENTS: Stimulating new innovations through exciting collaborations New creative connection between artists from a range of backgrounds Advocacy for diversity of cultural expressions and UNESCO s 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression WHAT IS DISTINCTIVE ABOUT REMASTERED MYTHS? One of the only dedicated programs in Australia supporting emerging and refugee artists to develop new material through collaboration Opportunities for the exchange of artists perspectives that foster innovation Connects the wider public to new ideas, diverse cultural networks and diaspora Builds cultural knowledge and increases cultural competence Diversification of the Australian music market 10

COMMON GROUND Link: Common Ground playlist on youtube.com/user/multiculturalartsvic WHAT IS COMMON GROUND? An interfaith spoken word workshop and performance program exploring the role of faith in everyday life and the power of spoken word. THE PROBLEM(S) THE PROJECT ADDRESSES: Limited opportunities for young people of different faiths and cultures to connect and explore their identities A lack of social cohesion and mutual understanding in Australia Issues of intergenerational understanding around faith and culture Limited platforms for creative cultural expression for young people Media misinformation, stereotyping and assumptions around race, faith, culture and young people from cultural diverse backgrounds THE PROGRAM: A series of workshops led by spoken word mentors to develop new poetry and spoken word pieces for performance showcases. As an Australian who has never experienced war, I do not know the anguish and fear of living in a country that forces one to flee for safety. I can t know it, but I can learn something of the feelings and experience when I hear it spoken and articulated in words prepared for performance - Common Humanity in Common Ground by Suzi Jacmenovic, Key components: Creating a safe space to share intimate stories and issues Builds interfaith and cross-cultural understanding Develops Melbourne s spoken word scene Showcases intimate stories and perspectives from young people from a variety of faith-based cultures and diverse backgrounds ACHIEVEMENTS: A core group of mentors from CALD backgrounds to drive the program Increased promotion of the value of the program through word-of-mouth and social media Publications and films produced New creative collaborations formed between young spoken word performers and musicians Increased confidence of performers Agenda driven by young people of different faith groups WHAT IS DISTINCTIVE ABOUT COMMON GROUND? A focussed program on interfaith understanding utilising spoken word and the arts to build social cohesion and cultural inclusion A robust creative arts approach to challenge stereotypes and negative mediaprofiling A tested model for empowering young people 12
It s why we re here, don t be real, be amazing. The best way to serve is when your dreams come true and it s fulfilling when it impacts the lives that surround you. For you and I can render no greater service than to make the most of ourselves because unless someone like you is going to care a whole awful lot nothing is going to get better, it s not. -Abe Nouk Image: Spoken Word Session #2, Igniting Imagination 2015, partnership with Melbourne Festival, James Henry Photography 13
