2 DEAR MEDIALOGY STUDENT VIL DU VIDE MERE? We re sure you have given your future a lot of thought; where to go, where to live, where to work and not least what to work with. In this pamphlet, we want to give you an insight into your job opportunities and perhaps open your eyes to prospects you haven t yet considered. Throughout your education, you have obtained a range of specialised skills which make you eligible for many types of jobs perhaps more than you are aware of. Up until now, Medialogy graduates have had a tendency to look for employment in creative fields such as the film industry, art, music and entertainment; however, for one thing, jobs in these fields are rather scarce, and more importantly: medialogists are far more versatile than that! As a medialogist, you are highly qualified for jobs within programming, UX design and evaluation, software development, web development, interaction design, IT consultancy, project management, etc. Such jobs are plenty especially people with good programming skills are much sought after and you are eligible for all of them. On the following pages, you may read about job experiences by former Medialogy students; a UX designer, two software engineers, an IT consultant and a UX senior consultant. In addition, we have gathered some statistics to show you where Medialogy graduates typically find jobs. 2 AALBORG UNIVERSITY 2016

As can be seen, almost all graduates have been employed in jobs that can be categorised as IT jobs such as software development, interaction design, web development and a range of consultancy jobs, etc. 3

4 COMPETENCE PROFILE As a graduate of Medialogy, you will have obtained a strong and facetted profile within media technology and interactive digital media. Below is a competence profile, showing the core competences of a medialogist. Medialogists specialise in: Systematically conceiving, designing, implementing, programming and evaluating prototypes of digital media products (including their software) targeted at specific users, e.g., apps, web pages, games, audio-visual installations, tangible interfaces, virtual reality experiences, augmented reality technologies, etc. Analysing, applying, and developing theories and technologies behind digital media products and their software. Designing and carrying out iterative development processes that generate knowledge about users and feeding this into product designs to optimise the user experience in a given context. Operating effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary research & development team in collaboration with clients and representative users. Designing and carrying out scientifically sound experiments to evaluate media products and prototypes, as well as analysing and communicating the results thereof. The Maslow is a result of combining fields such as computer science, electronics and mathematics. Medialogy s interdisciplinary structure gave me the ability to look at a problem with many different perspectives. Looking at a problem from different discipline s viewpoint often sheds a new light on its domain, enabling one to come up with novel solutions. Furthermore, it motivated me to continue my search for tools after I graduated that would help me become a better problem solver. 6 Name: Lars Knudsen Current employment: Danske Bank, Aalborg Job category: Software development Job title: Software Engineer Employed since: June 2016 Graduated: 2011 LinkedIn Profile: bit.ly/larsknudsen During my studies at Medialogy, I learned about a lot of different topics regarding design, user involvement, scientific methods, programming skills and so on. At first, when I finished my studies, I did not consider becoming a software engineer at Danske Bank, but when browsing for job opportunities, I realised that my skills actually matched what they were looking for so I ended up applying and getting the job. As a software engineer, I expected I would mainly be applying my programming skills, writing software for the bank's backend and frontend. However, I have also found myself spending a lot of my time discussing design and user experience consideration for the projects I am involved in. I participate in making design decisions, ranging from whether to use a certain type of menu or the options regarding different types of notifications in mobile apps, to designing user facing interfaces from scratch and making prototypes. On the more technical side of things, I provide technical insight regarding for example infrastructure limitations for products or propose different technologies for implementing a given solution. In my experience, the problem-oriented projects and the group work experiences are a great preparation for working in IT and I have found plenty of opportunities to apply a lot of my skills, even though I expected the job as a software engineer to focus only on programming." 6 AALBORG UNIVERSITET SPIL.AAU.DK 6

In my current position as executive consultant with Moment A/S [a Danish recruitment agency, ed.], I am the main responsible for our activities within IT, media technology and computer games. We do both consultancy and recruitment for a broad range of positions in Danish companies. This very much requires a thorough technical professional competence within these specific subjects. A few years back when I started as a consultant with a successful Danish IT consultancy firm, I was actually surprised how much of my background in Medialogy matched the required skills for an IT consultant. It turned out that Medialogy s general focus on programming in relation to analysis, design, implementation and evaluation formed an almost perfect basis for an IT consultant s everyday tasks. Solid programming skills are essential for an IT consultant, and while developing solutions for pension schemes and job seekers allowance systems may sound a bit dull, it really gave me the perfect chance to utilise and further develop the competences I obtained during my studies. I can only encourage current Medialogy students to program as much as possible during their studies, and also to open their eyes to the fact that the IT world is not just configuration of networks and printers, but actually a very exciting field for a medialogist. Name: Nikolaj Jensen Company: Visma Consulting, Copenhagen Job category: Consultancy Job title: UX senior consultant Employed since: June 2015 Graduated: 2012 LinkedIn Profile: bit.ly/nikolajjensen The broad knowledge and skillsets I gained from a bachelor s in Medialogy, combined with the specialisation in user experience from a master s in Medialogy and the AAU model made me a coveted asset for several companies. I chose to start my career in one of the world s largest providers of video surveillance software: Milestone Systems. Here, I was put in charge of improving the usability of existing solutions as well as designing new ones. I worked closely with backend and frontend developers to ensure that my prototypes and wireframes were executed as intended. Today, I work as a UX senior consultant at Visma Consulting, a large Nordic IT company, where I work closely with customers on all user experience matters, ranging from user testing and evaluations to designing large scale systems. I still rely on the broad range of skills I gained from my education; knowledge about programming, design, project management etc., which enables me to effectively communicate with all members of a project team, and make me a valued asset for many of our customers. 8

This has given me the insight I need in daily planning and communication of assignments to a team of designers, backend and frontend developers. In practice, this means that I take part in all aspects starting from brainstorms and conceptualisation of ideas with user involvement in pride of place, focusing on UX, to business modelling and review of code in backend to technical input in frontend, and lastly, presentation to customers and users. While studying Medialogy, I gained experience in such work via cooperation with external partners in semester projects supported by the courses. *Søren founded the company BookBites A/S after having worked as among others assistant professor at AAU. 9

I help ensure that products are compatible with the reality and context for which they are intended. Medialogy has given me a strong basis for actively including users in the research, design and evaluation phases, enabling me to develop products consistent with their needs. During my studies, the common denominator was to develop solutions based on real-world problems which, as a UX designer, you must be prepared to handle. The focus on programming in Medialogy has given me broad technical competences, allowing me to realise concepts and design ideas for functioning interactive prototypes where I can revise solutions effectively. With my background in Medialogy, I am able to contribute in all phases, but my true strong suit is my competence to create solutions which ensure good user experience! 10

11 Name: Simon Pedersen Current employment: Accenture A/S Job category: Software development Job title: Software Engineer Analyst Employed since: September 2015 Graduated: 2015 LinkedIn Profile: bit.ly/simonpedersen Accenture is one of the world s largest IT consultant companies in the world with over 370,000 people worldwide, over 500 in DK and two from Medialogy. Here, I work with Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and we are starting on artificial intelligence to bring our clients into the new era of IT. The great thing about Accenture is you try new technologies and even bring it to the clients. As a bonus, you have this enormous network of people, which is eager to help you. How have I used Medialogy? I directly or indirectly use a large portion of Medialogy. In current projects, I am programming in VB.net or C# (If you fancy Java, we have people using that as well). The job as a consultant is very exciting, because instead of just programming you will meet with clients face-to-face. I need to analyse current business cases with the client and then implement solutions for them. It is very interesting to present solutions to business owners and system experts, which is very much similar to what you do at Medialogy. 11

12 SPILPROGRAMMØR IT.AAU.DK Name: Peder Walz Pedersen Current employment: The Central Denmark Region Job category: Interaction design Job title: E-learning Consultant Employed since: August 2016 Graduated: 2016 LinkedIn Profile: bit.ly/pederwalzpedersen As an e-learning consultant, I develop digital teaching material for employees in psychiatry, the social sector and hospitals, patients and relatives. In my daily work, I manage my own projects and take part in others. I am responsible for developing DIY -tools. Among others, I have undertaken innovation and user involvement in concept developing and programming an App-designer from where clinicians can personally manage development of simple apps for clinical work and hereby support the mission of promoting citizens opportunities in health and welfare. In addition, I have managed a project in development of e-learning pertaining to resuscitation of children and adults. As a project manager, I solve several tasks myself while planning and coordinating the tasks outside of my core competences in cooperation with my colleagues. The project approach allows me to utilise my broad competence profile from Medialogy, applying to everything from project understanding, planning and cooperation in design and implementation. In the design process, I utilise my UX experience from Medialogy regarding concept development, user involvement and solution evaluation. In the development process, I utilise my knowledge from the programming courses in developing digital solutions for apps and web.
