Fall 2015 IAB Meeting: October 6-8th Hosted by: UMass Amherst Welcome: Welcome to the Center for e-design May Newsletter. This month s edition of the newsletter features the research site at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst), and industry members Raytheon and PTC. UMass Amherst is currently the oldest site in the Center for e-design, flourishing since the Center s inception in UMass Amherst will host the next IAB meeting October 6-8th The Center has had a strong relationship with Raytheon and PTC for many years. Both are headquartered in Massachusetts and both have collaborated with UMass researchers on many different projects in and outside of the Center for e-design. Raytheon, an international aerospace and defense company, and PTC, a technology solutions company, are featured on pages 5 & 6. We are also delighted to report that the Center for e-design will have a strong presence at the Industrial and Systems Engineering Conference (ISERC) in Nashville, May 30 - June 2. Two special sessions featuring research in the Center will be featured - details included on page 7. 2 Feature Site News An Original Site Changes with the Times The University of Massachusetts at Amherst is the one remaining site from the inception of the Center for e-design back in Much has changed in engineering design and the needs and capabilities of industry since The UMass Amherst team under Dr. Sundar Krishnamurty s leadership relies on the strong foundation built by their breadth of experiences to help the Center for e-design to build the bridge to the vision of the future by remaining on the cutting edge of exciting new technological advances. A Historical Perspective In the early days, design processes were rapidly evolving. Web-based tools were new then. Even CAD was not yet used widely for all designs. The need was great to develop any electronic tools that supported the engineering design process and to find ways to effectively take advantage of the paradigm shift caused by the new World Wide Web. Evolution of the Web By the middle of the last decade, the World Wide Web was established for about ten years. By then, the emergence of the Semantic Web caused a further shift in this technological paradigm. The Semantic Web, introduced by the W3C consortium, offered a way to organize the huge maze of information based on its context and meaning. The Web Ontology Language (OWL) resulted to enable the development of interoperable tools that are human readable but computer decidable. Research at UMass and the other original sites focused on improving engineering design processes in ways that utilized these and other technological developments over time. The UMass site was lead in the earlier years by Dr. Ian Grosse and Dr. Janis Terpenny. Dr. Terpenny is now at Iowa State University, where she serves as the Director of the Center for e-design. Dr. Grosse is still very active with the Center for e-design and offers expertise in engineering knowledge management that led to an OWL-based tool of an e-design framework to model information semantically during an engineering design process to reveal the context of product design intent transparently to all design participants and enable the execution of context-based logical decision making in the process. Progress toward the Future Coupled with technological advances in Web-based tools and product information management is the acceleration of advanced manufacturing capabilities in recent years. Advanced manufacturing opened up new industries to the realization of products that were unimaginable a few short years 2

3 Feature Site News ago. Additive manufacturing not only makes it possible to make products that were difficult to produce in the past, but also, accelerates the transition between design and manufacturing. This will likely cause a paradigm shift from Design for Manufacturing approaches of the past to Manufacturing for Design processes of the future. The team at UMass Amherst keeps a close ear and eye on the pulse of these changes to apply well established research capabilities to the needs of today. Thus, the focus of our team recently shifted to translational research in design and manufacturing. To this end, our team at UMass Amherst launched Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication Lab (ADDFab) in AddFAB aims to provide state-of-the-art additive manufacturing and related digital manufacturing capabilities to support the translation of new technologies in biosensors and medical devices from lab bench to human testing that can then pave the way for commercialized innovative products and services. AddFAB will move into a brand new facility at the Life Sciences Lab on the Amherst campus in 2016 to launch the Center for Personalized Health Monitoring. At that time, AddFab will expand significantly. This expansion will feature the addition of a direct metal printer and a high precision machining center. The plan includes addition of equipment for additive manufacturing of unique materials such as carbon fiber or electrically conductive material. There will also be a full suite of part inspection equipment, which includes a coordinate measuring machine, a surface roughness sensing system, and a Rockwell hardness tester. This equipment expansion will complete and compliment the full suite depicted below that was assembled in the summer of That suite already covers all main processes for the additive manufacturing of polymers. Durable nylon parts are made on a Formiga P110, which uses a laser sintering process. Photopolymers are solidified by UV curing materials from many jets on the Objet Eden for single materials and the Objet Connex 350 for the simultaneous production of multiple materials. The Connex and Formiga were each purchased for about $250,000. These capabilities are supported by more specialized and lower cost equipment. High quality Fused Deposition Modeling parts from ABS materials can be produced on a UPrint SE. Two-dimensional fabrication can be done on a GCC LaserPro Spirit GLS that cuts through soft materials and can engrave on most materials. A Geomagic Capture 3D scanner can represent and convert the external contour of a physical object into a digital format. 3

4 Feature Site News Latest Suite of Equipment for Additive Manufacturing of Polymers To maximize these new capabilities, several proposals have been submitted to contribute toward needed research advances to help address some of the most important issues in additive manufacturing today. A predictive metamodeling approach is in review at NIST to help to reduce the trial and error of current product development with additive manufacturing. An NSF Supplemental proposal was submitted with Wayne State to develop information modeling techniques that would facilitate design for additive manufacturing. A white paper and ASME conference poster propose advanced modelling and simulation techniques and tools to help to automate process prediction. A proposal was submitted with UMass Lowell to UMass Science and Technology Innovation to identify and develop the next generation of additive manufacturing materials. This shift to translational research in design and manufacturing is not limited to only additive manufacturing. This is evidenced by the team s recent partnerships with new SBIR Phase II organizations. One such example is the optimization of a highly customized mixed model production system at Artaic Innovative Mosaic. Here, automated and integrated forecasting and scheduling tools are being developed to overcome the inherent challenges. Another example is given by the use of team s strength in mechatronics to design and manufacture novel haptic feedback devices for the rehabilitation of stroke victims in collaboration Team Members Dr. Sup and Dr. Eddy with student researchers Tom Hagedorn and Jeremy Keys in ADDFab with FTL Labs. The team also collaborates with UMass Medical School, Bard/Duval, and Boston Scientific by contributing expertise in medical device design. The design and manufacturing expertise of the team lead to an invention this past year that retrofits seatbelts in older motorcoaches. The success of these changes to the focus at UMass Amherst is best exemplified by the team s collaboration over the years with Raytheon, a loyal industry partner. Raytheon reduced the costs of their transition to the electronic management of information from older documents by the successful implementation of the Memo Extractor that was developed at UMass Amherst. Here, information from old handwritten documents was captured and organized in an efficient and accurate process by the use of these tools. More recently, Raytheon shifted the focus of their interest with UMass Amherst to the opportunities availed by using additive manufacturing more effectively. A current project seeks to overcome some of the significant limits in process capability knowledge that limit actual product production. This project could help to integrate design and manufacturing in a way that can help to transform product realization in the future. UMass Amherst is proud to feature Raytheon in the following section. We hope to see you on the UMass Amherst campus at the October IAB meeting. Find out more about UMass Amherst at the event, and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage that New England has to offer at that time of year! 4
