Analysis of 3D- Printing Karan Mario Jude Pinto
Aim To explain the phenomenon of and to examine the advantages as well as the disadvantages of 3D- Printing
Will 3D- Printing lead to the Third Industrial Revolution?
Outline What is 3D- Printing? Current Situation and Applications Advantages Disadvantages Future Prospects Evaluation and Conclusion
What is 3D- Printing? 3D- Printing is three dimensional printing where 3D objects are fabricated by printing two dimensional layers over each other (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014). It employs additive manufacturing where products are built with the bottom up approach with the help of a computer based design( Hausman and Horne,2014). The materials used as ink in 3d printing are plastic, powder, resin, metal etc. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2014).
Figure 1: A 3D- Printer (Lipson and Kurman, 2013).
Figure 2: Layer by layer building of products (Hausman and Horne,2014;Brewster,2014).
Figure 3: The 3D- printing process (Forbes,2014).
Current Situation What is being printed? Parts of planes Food and chocolate Toys Guitars (Shek,2014)
Skin, bones, hands, ears and windpipes. (Dredge,2014) (Dredge,2014) (Chowdhry,2013) Concept Cars (Chowdhry,2013)
Applications Aviation: ü Parts of planes could be printed. A prototype of a printed plane has been created (Marks,2011,pp.17-18). Construction: ü Could help build houses and construction parts. Dutch architects are currently building a house using a 3D- printer called Kamermaker (The Times of India, 2014).
Applications Food: ü Could print edible food (Kelion,2014). Medicine: ü Could change the world of prosthetics (Wainwright,2013). ü Could use human tissue to print hearts and livers (Richards, 2013). In turn, solving the problem of organ donation.
Advantages v Printed products can be of a wide range of materials offering Xlexibility and robustness. v Increase efxiciency and manufacturing speed. v Reduced costs and losses. v Rapid prototyping.
Disadvantages Could lead to loss of jobs in countries with low skill laborers. Misuse of 3D- printing: Create harmful products like weapons and Xirearms. Intellectual Property Theft: People could print copyright items and create counterfeit products which could lead to losses of $100 billion per year (Stamford, 2014). The emission of ultraxine particles by 3D- printers could be harmful to health (Mosbergen, 2014).
Future Prospects Offers inxinite possibilities Widespread applications will benexit the Xields of architecture, aviation, automobiles, medicine, education and defense (Wile,2013) 3D- Printing is growing. (Newscientist.com, 2014)
Future Prospects The estimated growth of the 3D Printing Industry (Forbes,2014).
Evaluation and Conclusion 3D- printing will change the consumer culture from passive consumers to active creators. Certain laws and regulations surrounding the use of 3D- printing will have to be laid down. It could lead to the third industrial revolution provided enough investment is made and regulations are implemented. It could be the future of technology and could change the way the world works.
