1 Track Record Curriculum Vitae Dr. Timothy James Dodwell Prize Fellow, University of Bath, Bath, BA2 7AY Dr Timothy Dodwell is a Prize Fellow in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath, working at the dynamic interface between engineering, applied mathematics and high performance scientific computing. He has 9 international journal papers (with a further 5 submitted) and 11 conference proceedings, which span his research interests in modelling complex materials for industry- motivated problems. He has four on going projects totalling 743k ( 248k as PI) in multiscale modelling and optimisation of composite manufacturing processes and performance, non- local continuum models for crack propagation and uncertainty quantification in material performance and sub- surface flow applications. He supervises five industrially sponsored PhD students and one post doctoral researcher across these research areas. He obtained a First Class Honours in Mathematics (Bath, 2008), and was subsequently awarded a Bath Institute of Complex Systems (BICS) University Research Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering (Bath, ). His PhD focused on localised nonlinear instabilities in layered materials [6-9*]. Following his PhD, his two year post doc was supported by a 1- year EPSRC Pathways to Impact grant followed by a short Knowledge Transfer Partnership (sktp). During this period his work on wrinkling defects [1-3] provided the scientific basis for GKN to change the material used for manufacture of the A350 wing spar. The improved viscosity of this new (uncured) material has reduced scrap rates as a result of wrinkle defects in production spars (worth up to 200k each). EPSRC highlighted this work as an exemplar impact case study for the recent REF Panel. During the sktp, he led GKN s simulation work package on the national collaboration project Structural Technology Maturity (STeM) (joint with Bombardier and Spirit), during which he has developed a new multi- scale process model [1], which has resulted in an international patent (GB ). Based on Cosserat Theory, the continuum model captures interlayer mechanics without explicitly defining the layer geometry, and has shown the potential of capturing smallscale wrinkle defects at a fraction of the computational expense when compared to conventional finite element methods. Since his appointment as Prize Fellow he has secured additional funding as PI for further development and validation of the multiscale process models ( 123k TS/M000729/1 PI: Dodwell); an industrial sub- contract (GKN) in material characterisation and forming ( 50k GKN Sub- contact, PI: Dodwell) and two industry sponsored PhD studentships ( 140k total). During his fellowship he has continued to work on multiscale modelling of composite materials ( 495k EP/K031368/1 PI: Butler), yet has extended his research into areas of: optimization of tow steered composites [11], development of non- local continuum models for crack propagation, and stochastic quantification to capture material and modelling uncertainty in large scale simulations [10,14,20]. In collaboration with Scheichl (Bath) and Hafkta (Florida) he has developed novel multilevel stochastic methods for combining simulations with experimental field data using Bayesian techniques [10,14], and novel methodologies for computing rare events (failure)[20]. Very recently he has visited the University of Heidelberg, in which the ongoing collaboration will extend the high performance computation package DUNE, to include robust two- level domain decomposition methods for modelling highly anisotropic materials. He has chaired and co- organised a number of international workshops and conference sessions, including Flow, Folding and Fracture (Perth, July 2014), Nonlinear formation in the lithosphere (EGU Meeting, Vienna, April 2015) and Shock Sensitivity of Cylindrical Shell (Bath, April 2014). He has developed strong relationships with engineers, mathematicians, and industrial partners (GKN, Rolls Royce and Bombardier) which include international collaborations with the Universities of Western Australia (Hobbs, Bassom), Queensland (Muhlaus), Eindhoven (Peletier), Heidelberg (Bastian) and Florida State (Haftka).
