An increase in the number of graduate engineers each year in Lancashire, providing North West employers with a source of locally trained new graduates, resulting in employment generation in the area. An increase in the number of young people and, in particular the proportion of females, choosing to take up engineering at university. Our UCLan Experience... SHAHAD AL-BARAKAT BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering I chose to study engineering because of my love for solving puzzles and equations. I believe that engineers play a large role at developing the world that we live in to create a better future. I also enjoy the diversity of the people on my course. Shahad also welcomes the support and advice provided by UCLan. There's a lot of teaching and support within the university itself, we even have online logins where we could book appointments with our lecturers whenever we wish, pick a time and date and have one-to-one sessions with them concerning your course. Before going to University Nic primarily worked alone on projects, however the course has opened his eyes to the importance of working alongside your peers to achieve your goals. I have certainly gained better people skills. I ve always preferred working on my own, but being put into groups fairly frequently has helped me work better with a group of people to solve things Nick added. With Nic only part way through his studies, he s hoping to get a chance to work at the UCLan Engineering Innovation Centre, which opens in 2018/19, and lists it as one of the main reasons why he thinks anyone interested in a career in Engineering should study at UCLan. The fact that there s a lot of investment recently into engineering at UCLan (EIC) really shows that they value the subject. I haven t seen many other universities invest so much at once into engineering.

13 24 ATHENA SWAN UCLan has been awarded a prestigious educational chartermark for its commitment to women in specialist subject areas. In its first attempt, UCLan has been recognised in the Bronze Institution category of the ECU Athena SWAN award. I wouldn t be where I am today without my time at UCLan. They gave me the skills and knowledge required to compete in a highly competitive industry. Callum Craw, BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering graduate 2008 The skills I developed from my course and my knowledge and further understanding of my duties have helped me to hit the ground running straight away. Kyran Chana, BSc (Hons) Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying (now titled Quantity Surveying) graduate 2011 My greatest achievement since graduation is that I have created my own company with a partner - we are in seven countries already! Francisco Dominguez Roman, UCLan graduate 2002, BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering Self-employed Managing Director Without my degree I couldn't have had the same life experiences and doubt that I would have left the north of England. With it, I have worked in countries across the world, including the USA and the Far East and many places in between. Gary Beck, BSc (Hons) Electronics graduate 1994 I see UCLan as a key part of my development. Without it I wouldn t have the knowledge I needed to progress my career path, been exposed to the real world motorsport situations and met the people I work with or gained the skills I now have. Andy Lewis, BEng (Hons) Motorsports Engineering graduate 2009 Aerodynamicist, Williams F1 Gain as much experience as you can while you re studying as this is what employers will look for to set you apart from other applicants. Your qualification is important, but employers also need the right personalities and attributes when employing staff. Peter Crolla, BEng (Hons) Motorsports Operations graduate 2004 The final year of my course was really tough. It was all worth it though. I achieved a First in my degree, and as a result was promoted at work. I ve really enjoyed my university experience. I had a great relationship with my tutors who were really supportive and encouraged me all the way. Sarah Holmes, Surveying graduate 2011 I was made up to get a first. I d always wanted to work in engineering and my degree results have given me that chance. Defence engineering allowed me to combine my marine engineering experience with the theoretical knowledge gained at UCLan and BAE provided this opportunity. Max Taylorson, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Maintenance Engineering graduate 2014 BAE Systems graduate scheme Had it have not been for enjoying my studies during my building surveying degree and for graduating with a good degree from a well-respected programme of study at UCLan I would not be in the position I currently am with my career. When I look back to prior UCLan when I was originally choosing which course to study, one of my aims was to combine the elements I was interested in that would give me a career I would be passionate about. Well, I can truly say that has been achieved! Samantha Davis BSc (Hons) Building Surveying graduate 2002

14 26 27 MEET ONE OF OUR GRADUATES THE UCLAN EXPERIENCE STARTS HERE... REBECCA SMITH, 2014 graduate BEng (Hons) Robotics Engineering It was a conversation with a family friend which convinced Rebecca that a career in engineering would be for her. Originally coming to UCLan to study Electrical Engineering, she enjoyed the optional Robotics modules so much that she decided to switch courses and pursue a degree in Robotics Engineering a course fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. My lecturers were fantastic, they worked their socks off, and without them working as hard as they did, my degree wouldn t have the accreditation, meaning I wouldn t be where I am now. I remember one of my first assignments was racing a robot around a maze. Everyone thought I was crazy when I was telling them, but it genuinely happened! The aim was to create a program to control the robot and to put it to the test we used the maze to see whose program worked the best. Rebecca who graduated with a First Class degree Is now a Field Engineer at UK Power Networks. Her main role is to carry out repairs to the low voltage (LV) electricity network in Central London, which includes planned and reactive repairs to home and businesses and minimising the chance of them losing supplies again. However, there are other roles that she is expected to fulfil. I have other roles that include helping with the yearly quota of maintenance and upgrades by organising the replacement of aged, faulty or poor condition equipment and installing new equipment for the continued upgrade of the electricity network, Rebecca said. I am fully authorised on the LV network, being allowed to put myself to work without supervision, however I am still in training for HV (high voltage) authorisation. Her high level of work has not gone unnoticed with Rebecca recently reaching the final stages of the Women in Construction Awards Unfortunately she lost out to an engineer who had been in the industry for ten years, however to reach the finals is something Rebecca should be elated with at such a young age. Rebecca says she finds her career in engineering incredibly rewarding. There s nothing like the good feeling you get when someone comes out and genuinely thanks you for getting their electricity back on as quickly as you can. Seeing my portfolio of completed jobs slowly increase makes me feel like I m contributing to the company and doing something useful, and to me there really isn t any greater achievement.
