Engineering is one of the few ways in which human talent can be given the chance to improve, and frequently to transform, the comfort and prosperity of the human community HRH The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh KG KT OM GBE 2 Royal Academy of Engineering
Improving lives and opportunities through engineering Central to the wellbeing of people and the economic development of nations, engineering and engineers are at the heart of our day-to-day quality of life today and for future generations. What is possible today was often only imagined yesterday: from nanotechnology, transformative infrastructure projects, and advances in fighting disease to the ways we communicate, live, work, travel and play. In applying their knowledge, experience and creativity, engineers lead, shape and drive progress. Recognised and valued globally, they share their expertise and passion and pass these on to the next generation. Build a better world 1
Founder Fellows of the Academy at Buckingham Palace in 1976 A generation of achievement As the UK s national academy for engineering, we bring together the most successful and talented engineers to promote excellence in engineering for the benefit of society. Playing a powerful role in creating change, from the past to the present, we will continue to advance engineering practice and develop a new generation of engineers. A rich culture of generosity and philanthropy underpins the Academy s growth, and all our work benefits from the extraordinary expertise and standing of our Fellows. Significant achievements have been possible thanks only to private support from charitable foundations, industry, Fellows and friends. The Academy was set up as a Fellowship in 1976, the year of Concorde s first commercial flight 2 Royal Academy of Engineering
A generation of achievement We will continue to build for the future Early support from the Wolfson Foundation enabled us to launch our first industrial research fellowships in Today, hundreds of companies co-invest in and benefit from our expertise and mentoring. Nurturing future engineers is a natural role for the Academy, and we now deliver a range of national educational programmes. This expansion was made possible by early funding from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation which continues, alongside growing contributions from many others. A transformative donation from the ERA Foundation in 2004 helped launch new activities, including the Entrepreneur s Award. This support also underpinned the Academy s move to Prince Philip House in 2008, and with it, a step-change in our ambition and standing as the national academy for engineering. A subsequent campaign attracted keen interest and substantial funds. Providing authoritative, impartial advice and expertise optimises the value of our Fellowship and the Academy now advises on policy and issues of national and global importance. It also sets the agenda for education and diversity in UK engineering and technology. Fostering strong international networks from the start, we now tackle our world s grand challenges with a range of capacitybuilding, research and innovation activities in partnership with engineering communities across the globe. Shaping the education of engineers from every walk of life, the Academy s London Engineering Project was launched in 2005 and is now an exemplar nationally of a successful engineering education and engagement programme. We celebrate lifetime achievement and earlycareer successes with a range of awards including the prestigious international Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, launched in 2011, and the UK s long-standing MacRobert Award, recognising excellence in engineering innovation. In 2013 the Enterprise Hub was launched. This increasingly successful suite of activities enables the Academy to identify and support exceptional engineering and technology entrepreneurs towards commercial success by harnessing the expertise and insight of our Fellows. 6 Left: Dr Nicola Irwin, Enterprise Fellow 2015 Right: Students enjoying a Connecting STEM project Our impact In our vision for 2020 and beyond, the UK will increasingly be known across the world for the quality of its engineers and engineering and its deployment for the benefit of humanity. Making the UK a leading nation for engineering innovation In supporting the development of successful engineering innovation and business, we create wealth, employment and benefit for the nation. For every 1 the Academy spends on Research Chairs, we leverage a further 15 from industry and other sources. Over 300 companies look to us to develop research leaders and innovators. Our Enterprise Hub spin-outs have already attracted 6million in external investment. My understanding of business has markedly increased. I benefit from a knowledgeable and supportive mentor. We have many opportunities to network with and learn from leading entrepreneurs Dr Nicola Irwin, Enterprise Fellow 2015, Founder, Uroglide 4 Royal Academy of Engineering
Our impact Realising high-quality education and skills We meet the UK s needs by inspiring young people from all backgrounds and equipping them with the high quality skills they need for a rewarding career in engineering. Our Diversity Leadership Group brings together 50 organisations to increase diversity in engineering by recruiting from the whole talent pool. The Visiting Professor programme is active in over 30 universities enhancing teaching and learning and improving the employability of engineering undergraduates. Over 46,000 students in UK secondary schools have benefited from the Connecting STEM Teachers programme since its launch in It is very clear that students who have taken up opportunities through the project have been at a major advantage when applying for places both locally and at a national level Owen Belsey, Barrow Engineering Project Coordinator and Teacher of Design and Technology Positioning engineering at the heart of society We work to improve public awareness and recognition of the crucial role of engineers everywhere. 12 prestigious Academy prizes and awards recognise and celebrate excellent engineering every year. Over 60,000 young people and their influencers are reached annually through our school projects and Ingenious public engagement activities. Thanks to step-by-step guidance and support from my mentors in the Africa Prize, I was able to approach funders. The many insights gained from my training are opening doors for the project Dr Askwar Hilonga, 2015 Winner, Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation for creating a specialised water-filteration system for contaminated drinking water Build a better world 5
Photo left: Dr Askwar Hilonga receiving the Africa Prize for Engineering innovation from Malcolm Brinded CBE FREng Right: Bill Gates giving Keynote address at the first Global Grand Challenges Summit Leading the profession Our aim is to harness the expertise, energy and capacity of the profession to provide strategic direction for engineering and collaborate on solutions to the engineering grand challenges. The Academy advises government in policy areas covering energy, infrastructure, health and cybersecurity to support national capacity. Our Global Grand Challenges Summit in London explored mutual challenges and solutions with 450 leading practitioners and policymakers. The 36 professional engineering institutions participate in two policy alliances led by the Academy: Education for Engineering (E4E) and Engineering the Future. Engineering is a critical part of the UK economy. Government is always looking for the best advice wherever it can be found, and for engineering advice, the Royal Academy of Engineering provides an incredible source of expertise across the whole range of engineering Sir Mark Walport, Government Chief Scientific Advisor speaking at the Academy s 2015 Awards Dinner 6 Royal Academy of Engineering
Engineering has been good to me I still recall the tingling feeling when I got home one evening and saw an envelope franked Fellowship of Engineering, knowing that a few months earlier I had been asked if I would be willing for my name to be put forward for election as a Fellow. That was in 1985, and I still look forward to visiting and contributing to Academy activities. It is so comforting to be among other engineers who have been recognised for their contribution to engineering. In some ways, I m not really sure why I was elected, but I have for most of my career been willing to do work for the good of the profession or the country. Hence my continued involvement in international work trying to improve the collaboration of technologies for the ease of use of engineering guidance. I can look forward to the rest of my days in the knowledge that I do not have to worry about financial matters. I can see that the Academy has the need for more money to do even more work for the good of engineering, for the population of the world and to encourage a wider participation from young people entering the profession. It seemed sensible to me to leave a part of the money that I have earned over my lifetime to the Academy it came from engineering, so it should be used for that purpose. I personally have a SIPP arrangement for my pension, and leaving money in the SIPP to a charity is a tax-efficient way to use it. Accordingly, I have made an expression of wish to the Trustees of my SIPP fund, asking that a legacy be passed to the Academy. Barry Haseltine MBE FREng Build a better world 7
Colin Campbell Mitchell pioneered the development of the steam catapult for use on aircraft carriers. In his memory, his daughter left a substantial legacy to the Academy to create an award for UK engineers making the greatest recent contribution to the advancement of engineering Colin Campbell Mitchell Award winners Leaving a legacy A legacy gift is one of the most effective ways you can support the Academy. It is natural that your family and friends come first when considering a legacy. Once you have provided for loved ones there are several ways of leaving a gift to the Academy. Legacy bequests are vital to our work as they enable us to direct funds to meet our strategic goals and plan for the future. Your solicitor will advise you on the best way to record your intentions. If you wish to make a change to an existing will, a solicitor can advise on writing a Codicil. Our charitable status means there are tax benefits in leaving a legacy gift to the Academy. Under current legislation, a gift made through your will can reduce the taxable value of your assets. Your legacy gift to the Academy will help a new generation of engineers build our future for the benefit of all. 8 Royal Academy of Engineering
Leaving a legacy The planned redevelopment of the lower ground floor at Prince Philip House will provide a home for the Enterprise Hub A number of legacies and gifts have enabled the Academy to transform the public space at Prince Philip House. In an exceptional location, this leading venue contributes to a strong national presence for engineering. Recently, a transformative legacy gift from the late Geoffrey Argent FREng has enabled the Academy to plan for the redevelopment of the lower ground floor at Prince Philip House. This ambitious project will create a central gathering point for all the Enterprise Hub s beneficiaries, partners and investors as well as Fellows. The Hub s presence will improve the environment for the creation of successful, wealth-creating UK businesses. The Academy attracts the best researchers to work on the problems and opportunities that matter to industry Technopolis evaluation report, 2012 Build a better world 9
Left: : Students at our stand at the Big Bang Fair Right: Dr Daniel Elford, Enterprise Fellow 2013, developed novel noise barrier technology and was supported to form a new spin-out company Types of legacy gift Unrestricted legacies allow our trustee board to focus support according to our strategic priorities, and therefore are of the most benefit to the Academy. If you wish your gift to be applied to a particular area of our work we are always happy to talk to you or your executors about how your gift can be used. Residual legacy: A gift of all the remaining or a specified percentage of your estate, after all other gifts and costs have been deducted. Where only part of the residue is given, it is particularly important to ensure that the Royal Academy of Engineering receives that portion of the estate free from inheritance tax. Pecuniary legacy: A gift of a fixed sum of money, the value of which is likely to reduce over time with inflation. There are additional ways by which you can make a gift upon your death which your solicitors and other advisors can help you with. 10 Royal Academy of Engineering
Leaving a legacy Sample wording I hereby bequeath to the Royal Academy of Engineering registered charity number , based at Prince Philip House, 3 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5DG [enter percentage] of my residuary estate and I direct that the Director of Finance or other approved officer shall be a good discharge for such a legacy. Each trip I have organised through the award has given me much greater knowledge than university could have ever provided, and has led me to choose process safety as my career path and be completely happy in that decision Katherine Bayman Engineering Leadership Awardee Build a better world 11
You can help us build a better world NASA Letting us know If you decide to include the Academy as a beneficiary of a legacy gift, we would be delighted to hear from you so that we may thank you appropriately and keep you personally abreast of our work. 15 Our engineering leaders of the future are here now Toby Basey-Fisher, 2015 Enterprise Fellow, developed two affordable handheld anaemia diagnostic devices It is my great privilege to lead the Academy s Fellowship. Our collective capacity to contribute to the advancement of engineering is in evidence across our society and economy and we have much to be proud of. Our world is facing some great challenges and engineering and engineers are essential to addressing these successfully. The Academy has the ambition, responsibility and determination to play a leading role now and in the future. Remembering the Academy through a legacy gift will enable us to concentrate on our strategic priorities in the future and for future generations. Thank you for considering a gift in this way.
