2 Intellectual Property and Collaboration with Industry RIKEN Spirit RIKEN is dedicated to the pursuit of basic research in science and technology that will lead to industrial applications. RIKEN Cluster for Science, Technology and Innovation Hub (RCSTI) promotes RIKEN s joint research with industrial partners by securing and managing intellectual property, handling administrative procedures for various contracts, assisting venture businesses, and conducting outreach activities. RIKEN Industrial Co-creation Program RCSTI Outline Part1 We promote interdisciplinary research among centers affiliated with RIKEN, as well as strategic alliances between RIKEN and industrial partners. In our Program, we have established a project to deliberate on problems affecting society by bringing managers, researchers, and technicians together from both the industrial sector and RIKEN. Our work consists of matching technological seeds and developing common themes leading to full-scale joint research and large-scale collaborative research, which is followed by progress analysis and evaluation of results. A comprehensive structure for collaborations enables participation by a wide range of RIKEN researchers in technological areas and the technicians of our industrial partners. Industry The RIKEN-DAIKIN Wellness Life Collaboration Project was launched in October 2016 as the first program utilizing this structure.

4 Activities to support collaboration with industry RCSTI Outline Part3 Securing and managing intellectual property Patent liaison staff, including patent attorneys, help find inventions that may be patented and give support to protect patent rights. They examine whether research results may be filed as patents and give advice on providing further data for protecting patent rights. Licensing activities Coordinators support license acquisition including joint research proposals and technical instruction. A number of commercial products and services have been produced by using RIKEN s intellectual property. For details, see the back page of this brochure. Administrative tasks related to contracts Staff in charge of intellectual property and relevant laws examine contracts and confirm legal matters on joint research and licenses. Business development activities The Business Development Office, set up to assist government-academia-industry joint research, makes suggestions for private-sector technologies utilizing RIKEN s research. Authorization and support of RIKEN venture companies Authorizes business ventures using technologies derived from RIKEN s research and supports them in collaboration with venture capitalists, banks, audit firms and local governments. Commercialization of research results is achieved by the researchers working together with business management professionals. Outreach Outreach activities include participation in exhibitions and disclosing information on intellectual property, including patents, on the website.
