2 Science Agora (its objectives and achievements) Agora is an event for the purpose of linking science and society through science communication. It is an event consisting of a variety of programs for discussing policies from various angles to improve society by utilizing S&T. It has been held yearly since the inception in It has played a role as a showcase for diverse science communication practice. It has successfully created significantly useful knowledge for society through science communication. 3 Focused Approaches towards Agora Enriching Event Programs through the Participation of the Science Community Opening to the public JSTʼs virtual research institutes: Discussing underlying issues in the science community, such as the fusion of diverse academic fields, interaction with society, research ethics, and personnel development 2. 7 Development of Measurement and Analysis Technology at JST Development of Systems and Technologies for Advanced Measurement and Analysis : JST-SENTAN Program (launched from 2004) Implemented by Industry-Academia Collaboration Japanese Top Scientists Japanese Top Manufacturing Technology New Measurement and Analysis Technology Towards the creation of Only-One & Number-One Technology 37% of the main competitive funds for development of measurement and analysis technology 225 projects for the Development of Systems and Technology for Advanced Measurement and Analysis program out of 608 projects for the main development of measurement and analysis technology projects in Japan, including JST CREST, PRESTO, and ERATO as well as projects of JSPS, NEDO, and etc. Achievements so far Productization Cases: Approx. 40 (Ref) Revenue: Approx. 45 Billion yen Million yen About 40 research outcomes from the JST-SENTAN Program (Development of Systems and Technologies for Advanced Measurement and Analysis) are being utilized in JST Strategic Basic Research Programs (e.g. CREST), in which top-level scientists in Japan participate. Research outcomes from the JST-SENTAN Program were introduced to JST Strategic Basic Research Programs in FY As a result, we received approx. 100 inquiries, and about 40 outcomes were applied in CREST and so forth. 9 Reference: Examples of Products from Our Outcomes Optical Coherence Tomography (3D OCT-1000 series) System Development Type Development Period: FY Team Leader: Prof. Toyohiko Yatagai (Utsunomiya University) Participating organization: FUJIFILM Corporation - A high-resolution cross sectional imaging apparatus provides a true three-dimensional view of the underlying structures of the eye, including the retina. - 3D OCT brought a new concept of ophthalmological diagnosis and treatment of various pathologies, such as retinal separation and age-related macular degeneration. Commercialized by TOPCON Co. Automated 2D-Electrophoresis Device (Auto2D BM-100) Practical Realization Type Development Period: FY Team Leader: Yutaka Unuma (SHARP Corporation) Participating organization: Kumamoto University - An automated 2D electrophoresis device reduces total manipulation time to 100 minutes, more than 30 times faster than conventional manual 2D electrophoresis. - High resolution analysis is realized in both dimensions; 0.02pH for isoelectric point and 2kDa for molecular weight, with a spot reproducibility of less than 5% (CV). 10 Reference: Examples of Products from Our Outcomes Imaging Mass Microscope (imscope) Practical Realization Type Development Period: FY Team Leader: Kiyoshi Ogawa (SHIMADZU Corporation) Participating organization: Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Keio University - A combination of an optical microscope and a mass spectrometer, Imaging Mass Microscope enables obtaining an optical observation of biological tissue morphology, as well as tissue molecule distribution maps with a high spatial resolution of 5 μm. Real-time Stereo SEM(Hitachi SU3500) Practical Realization Type Development Period: FY Team Leader: Sukehiro Ito (Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation) Participating organization: Niigata University, Shizuoka University, EIZO Corporation - Real-time stereo SEM is realized by employing original tilted electron beam control technology combined with off-axis abbreviation correction. - High resolution 3D display for the naked eye allows high quality real-time 3D observation that is useful for micro-manipulation.
