2 REASONS TO SMILE Academic community is an inexhaustible source of: knowledge / experience imagination / invention curiousity / speculation enthusiasm and dedication These features are waiting to be materialised and the results fully exploited for the benefit of the whole of the society and all the parties involved through technology transfer - the process of transferring scientific findings from one organisation to another for the purpose of further development and commercialisation as defined by the AUTM (Association of University Technology Managers )

3 REASONS TO ACT AWARENESS OF IPRs within the academic community IS RATHER LOW IP LAWS BREACHED FREQUENTLY with no apparent consequences for such a breach PATENT APPLICATION and PATENT maintenance FEES TOO HIGH (min. 5,365.5 for 20 years) Investigators work preferably for external companies who have means to fund

4 REASONS TO ACT LACK OF INFORMATION LACK OF MOTIVATION POOR INFRASTRUCTURAL CONDITIONS / environment for KT TT SCARCE as well as TT Offices (five TTCs in Slovakia established within projects, their future uncertain questionable funding sources)

5 National project National infrastructure for supporting technology transfer in Slovakia NITT SK Strategic goal of the NITT SK project To propose and put into effect the national infrastructure to support technology transfer, and thus contribute directly to more intensive and efficient state support to research and development.

7 Activities planned Awareness raising of IP and technology transfer Promotion of Slovak R&D organisations, their competencies and results Evaluation of science and research performance Support of science community in the process of IPR protection and TT Marketing of research results and searching partners for their commercialisation Support in negotiation and signing the licensing agreements Assistance with establishing TTC at universities and RD institutions and providing methodological support

19 OBJECTIVE 1 - current state Preparation for public procurement for provision of expert services associated with each step in TT process (call in July 2012). Expert services will be provided to the Slovak academic institutions payment-free from the NITT SK project budget, later from the Patent fund Analysis of feasibility of operation of the national system for supporting TT via NTTC at the institutional level Preparation for the introduction of systematic provision of services for retrieval of information from patent (and other IPR subjects) db, db of technology offers and demands as requested by the academic community in individual stages of R&D and TT processes Preparation of methodology and a sw tool to assess the potential of R&D institutions for TT (monitoring and competition for funding)... and more

21 In association with Data Centre project activities, a licence to use scientific computational programs have been granted VASP (Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package) - a computer program for atomic scale materials modelling, e.g. electronic structure calculations and quantum-mechanistic molecular dynamics Bioinformatics - a software platform for data-basing and analysis of 1D patterns, 2D protein gels, phenotype arrays, and DNA/protein sequences. It combines information so as to provide data-basing, integrated networking, data mining, clustering, identification and statistical tools
