3 AI and Robotics funding at the EC : a long history Significant funding for cognitive systems, robotics and Artificial Intelligence since 2004 Robots = embodied AI About 80m funding for new projects per year More than 90 ongoing projects Emphasis of activities has been on smartness Perception, learning, reasoning, acting, interaction, Testing and deployment Various application areas and platforms (healthcare, agriculture and food, inspection and maintenance, agile manufacturing, etc.) Total Cognitive Systems and Robotics funding about 550m between 2007 and 2013

4 H2020 : AI in DG CONNECT Robotics and AI o SPARC Public-Private partnership for Robotics in Europe o 700M EU funding - overall investment of 2.8 billion Future and Emerging Technologies o Human Brain project - 120M Big Data, Data analytics - 250M IoT pilot on Autonomous Vehicle - 20M AI-on-Demand platform - 20M [coming 2018] Supporting businesses and sectors to successfully apply AI Develop a European AI ecosystem bringing together knowledge, algorithms, tools and resources Develop a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda for AI (including ELSE aspects) 4
