Commentary on candidate 1 evidence Candidate 1 was awarded 56 marks out of a possible 80. Section 1 Question 1(a) The candidate was awarded 10 marks (from the top band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated a very good knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. The candidate s explanation regarding the Bauhaus s inspiration and contribution to design included detailed consideration of most of the aspects. They provided a thorough and detailed explanation and attempted to cover all points provided. The candidate identified a design movement and provided a well-structured answer that considered the influence materials and technology had on their chosen design movement. Good use of the Wassily chair was made to exemplify different aspects of the answer such as materials, manufacture, aesthetics and public reaction to the movement. Good reference to the designer Marcel Breuer and his influence and response to social attitudes was made. The answer also showed a good understanding of the Bauhaus s inspiration and their influence on our industrial society. Attempts to consider public reaction was also included in the answer. Question 1(b) The candidate was awarded 6 marks (from the top band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter and a secure understanding of the main aspects was demonstrated. The answer provided a detailed description of both how computers are used in the manufacture of products and their impact on the manufacturing industry. The candidate s detailed description included how computers: have made manufacture more efficient have influenced mass manufacture can provide affordable products improved accuracy and quality have impacted working practices have had a negative impact on the workforce 1 of 5
Question 1(c) The candidate was awarded 3 marks because they provided an explanation with three valid points. The candidate s explanation considered: global companies producing similar products raising awareness on a large global market developing an awareness/image (branding) Most of the answer focused on marketing similar products in a global market. Question 1(d) The candidate was awarded 3 marks (from the middle band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter and an understanding of the main aspects. Answer did not always address the reasons why ergonomics has been influential in the design of products. Much of the answer focused on how ergonomics has influenced the design of a hand blender and Kettle. However throughout the answer the candidate did make general reference to why both these products were changed due to ergonomics. Question 1(e) The candidate was awarded 4 marks because they provided four valid points in their explanation. The candidate s explanation considered: increased sales gaining new customers increased awareness premium pricing for fashionable products They also provided a good explanation of the influence of seasonal fashion on the aesthetics (colour) of products. Section 2 Question 2(a) The candidate was awarded 5 marks (from the top band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated secure knowledge of the subject matter and a secure understanding of the main aspects. They considered a good range of techniques that were suitable for the information required. Their answer provided descriptions of: 2 of 5
research into materials testing models user trials researching and applying anthropometric data carrying out questionnaires researching existing products All the descriptions made clear reference to the baby changer and the information required to ensure comfort, safety and ease of use. However, some descriptions lacked enough detail to achieve full marks. Question 2(b) The candidate was awarded 6 marks (from the top band) because they provided a clear explanation of the suitability of the communication techniques identified. There was a good understanding regarding the types of information required to be communicated between each group and the suitability of each communication technique selected. The candidate identified a different communication technique suitable for each of the scenarios provided. A clear explanation was provided that detailed what information would need to be communicated for each scenario, explaining why: was suitable for communication between Market researcher and Designer CAD was suitable for communication between Designer and Production Engineer Video conferencing was suitable between Designer and Client Question 3(a) The candidate was awarded 3 marks because they provided three valid points explaining the suitability of selected materials with clear reference to the torch as follows: durability of ABS was explained and referenced to the potential to drop and scratch the torch comfort and durability of silicon was referenced to holding and pressing the button and the repeated pressing of the button the corrosion resistant property of Anodised aluminium was referenced to underwater use Question 3(b) The candidate was awarded 5 marks (from the top band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter and a secure understanding of the main aspects. 3 of 5
The candidate provided detailed descriptions of: snap fit fixings screws location points The descriptions made clear reference to a handheld mixer, and sketches were used to provide clarity and detail. Question 3(c) The candidate was awarded 0 marks because they did not answer the question. Candidate s answer was based on assumptions about 3D printing ie: 3D printing is not necessarily quicker than traditional methods traditional modelling can be highly accurate complex parts can be made with traditional methods Question 4(a) The candidate was awarded 2 marks because they provided a description with two valid points relating to the benefits of using new technology and made clear reference to Apple s IPhone. The description included: increased market share enhanced reputation The candidate s description of the benefits of changing consumer demands lacked enough detail or depth to be awarded any marks. Question 4(b) The candidate was awarded 1 mark because they provided one valid point relating to the risks of launching new products. The descriptions of product rejection and high pricing were generic and lacked depth and detail. However, the mark was awarded for the risk of rivals releasing a similar but superior product at the same time. Question 5(a) The candidate was awarded 3 marks (from the middle band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated an understanding of ergonomics. References to aspects of the product were made. The candidate displayed a good understanding of how ergonomics may have influenced the: weight of the extinguisher diameter of the main handle 4 of 5
operating the handle The description of how the condition in which it is used has influenced the design of the extinguisher lacked suitable depth and detail. Question 5(b) The candidate was awarded 4 marks (from the top band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated a clear understanding of how a company can ensure their products are manufactured to the highest standard. Consideration of two or more methods was given in their answer. The candidate s description included: monitoring machinery employing skilled staff training staff sampling raw materials random sampling No marks were awarded for BSI and Kite marks as the question was about the manufacture not the product. Question 6(a) The candidate was awarded 1 mark (from the bottom band) because they provided an answer that demonstrated a limited understanding of the key stages of questionnaires which lacked sufficient depth and detail for this level. Their description of a user trip described a user trial that lacked depth or detail. Question 6(b) The candidate was awarded 0 marks because they provided an answer made up from generic statements that could be applied to any products manufacture. No consideration of high-tech products and the problems associated when manufacturing these types of products in limited numbers was displayed in their answer. 5 of 5
