2 Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel Research Association (MWW) The names Marbach, Weimar and Wolfenbüttel stand for three institutions, united by more than 500 years of German and European ideas, literature and culture. The German Literature Archive Marbach, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel collect, preserve and provide access to sources that are crucial to the study of German literary and intellectual trad ition, and are thus devoted to illuminating the long-term transform ations of cultural heritage in Germany. At the recommendation of the German Council of Science and Humanities and with funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), these institutions formed a consortium in 2013 with the goal of bundling their research activities. The MWW Research Association pursues the following objectives: Developing innovative research projects and exhibitions in order to draw attention to the valuable works at the archives, libraries and museums at the three institutions and providing forward-looking impulses for humanities and cultural studies research Supporting junior researchers through collection-related research programmes and intensifying collaboration with international partner institutions Building a joint virtual research environment and initiating new developments in the field of Digital Humanities

3 Research projects Three joint research projects form the core activities of MWW. They address current issues of scientific inquiry with reference to the items in the holdings, and thereby illuminate developments from early modernity to the 20th century. Writers Libraries. Materiality Orders of Knowledge Performance Libraries are essential sources of reference for writers. Working with selected examples, this project investigates the books writers collect, how they work with them and what influence these books exercise on their writing. The project mainly focuses on scholarly libraries of the 16th to the 18th century (Wolfenbüttel), Goethe as a reader and user of his personal book collection and the ducal library (Weimar), and the libraries of 20th century Jewish writers in exile (Marbach). Iconic Strategies: Authors Portraits This project investigates a unique class of pictorial works in the holdings at the three institutions: authors portraits. Over the centuries and across genres from early modern prints (Wolfenbüttel) to the portrait sculptures of Weimar Classicism (Weimar) to modern photography (Marbach) this project examines the forms of presentation, the functional mechanisms and the poetological strategies of legitimisation contained within authors portraits. Text and Frame. Modes of Presenting Canonical Works Highlighting works spanning 600 years, this project assumes that an appeal to the senses plays a decisive role in the construction of a canon. Such works include visible and tangible books, church hymns and films. On the basis of the Psalms (Wolfenbüttel), Faust (Weimar) and the great moderns (Marbach), the project investigates how canons are subject to trends and examines the conditions and limitations of the media employed.

5 Virtual research environment The partner organisations have teamed up to build a virtual research environment which will permit researchers to use the digital collections at the three institutions for their own research projects. It will also provide a reliable means for storing data in the long term. The virtual environment will also include a universal search tool and a workspace for international humanities and cultural studies research. Programmes for young researchers MWW promotes international young researchers at the post graduate level in three different programmes: Four- to eight-week research internships in one of the three partner institutions Scholarships for researchers in the Digital Humanities Annual international summer school in Marbach, Weimar or Wolfenbüttel Publications As forums of research and reflection MWW publishes two academic journals: The Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte (ZIG), jointly published by the three institutions in cooperation with the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, cultivates the long memory of ideas and follows their hidden trails.
