8 Press Release - December 2016 Avidsen, a French SME specialising in smart homes, is entering the war of home automation protocols With its new range of accessories for smart homes presented at CES 2017, Avidsen is tackling the issue of communication protocols. This world exclusive and highly innovative approach will be showcased at the biggest international consumer electronics show, which opens in early January Avidsen is coming to CES 2017 with a breakthrough patented innovation that solves the issue of home automation protocols. This bold technical stance is elegant in its simplicity and implementation, and will be revealed in a preview on 5 January. Alexandre Chaverot, CEO of Avidsen, explains: "Today, there is a huge range of products for all home needs, but there are still obstacles to purchasing, and we're a long way from a mass market. Consumers who have already been converted to home automation solutions find themselves locked in to ranges and products using a single protocol they are limited to products that can interact with their box. Professionals and end consumers are reluctant to take the leap, and the home automation market is struggling! The worst aspect is that new protocols are regularly released, that this is an inevitable movement, and that they bring new benefits but ultimately, the market becomes increasingly fragmented. There is no end in sight in the protocol war for years, no particular alliance has won over the market, and this is killing the market's dynamic for everyone." The reality of the purchasing experience can be frustrating when a product appeals to customers but they ultimately do not purchase it because it is incompatible with our box. Products should be bought because they are truly wanted, not despite their flaws! But above all, who wants to have to be a geek and spend time choosing automation devices based on their protocol, not on their features, cost or design? Home automation is struggling to escape the circle of electronics fans and gadget lovers, of cutting-edge innovators and computer whizzes the people who enjoy mastering new technology. This is just a small proportion of what the smart home market could become if we didn't have this psychological barrier or this 'entrance test' that requires prior knowledge. There are too many home automation protocols! Thread, HomeKit, Z-wave, EnOcean, Zigbee, Brillo, Weave, Alljoyn, ARW, X2D, EIB/Konnex, KNX, Iocontrole, Somfy RTS, DIO So many strange names, so many different protocols, both proprietary and open, but rarely interoperable. There is a wide range of home automation boxes on offer, and users initially bought one without really knowing that they were locking themselves into a world of a single (or several) communication protocols chosen by their manufacturer to control their automated home devices. Although some home automation boxes take the opposite stance and offer multi-protocol and multi-application formats, the market is still divided.
