Ka Welina is a network of native Hawaiian communities whose primary goal is stewarding the precious lands, culture and values of the Kānaka Maoli, the indigenous people of these islands. Ka Welina Network provides these communities with a dynamic way to invite visitors and engage in authentic host-visitor experiences, in the interest of sharing our culture and our passion for our work. The protocols of each visit are guided by cultural values that are relevant to the hosts respective communities.

10 Four Phase Project The long-term : create a new paradigm that allows Maoli access to, participation in, and community control of a portion of Hawaii s leading economic sector, the visitor industry. The project s strategic model: Establish community - based host-visitor (CBHV) programs.

19 Vision A Place Where we can be Hawaiian, A World that Shares Our Aloha Hawaiʻi Community-Based Host-Visitor experiences are culturally appropriate, socially responsible, environmentally sustainable and economically viable. They embrace and exhibit the Hawaiian values of aloha, pono, kuleana and mālama.

24 Intent Create a model that Moves Hawaii s visitor trade away from being a servantserved paradigm to a place and host driven process where visitors can experience life in Hawaii as a Maoli experiences it. From the Maoli host sharing the history and culture of the Maoli people, as well as their everyday life, the visitor will be culturally sensitized and socially enriched through building a kinship with their Maoli host and the aina.

25 Intent Work with multiple communities wherever we're invited to assist them to grow self-sufficiency; Help such communities network with each other to form host/visitor alliances; Create opportunities for networking with similar organizations throughout Pasifika; Provide training (at minimal or no cost) to host communities in resource and asset management.

32 The Community-based Host-Visitor Concept Around the World The CBHV concept was deeply grounded in the hosting traditions of Pasifika, and there are a number of CBHV operations in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu and Tahiti. The Tongan government has recently inquired about a more formal consultation regarding the development of Tonga s tourism sector. The project has garnered a very high level of interest from Native American and Alaska tribes. Next steps would involve traveling to some of these communities and doing presentations and workshops on the process.
