7 State of maritime information Insufficient metadata: Data about the data Based on fields Author Title Subject Publisher Date Terms are searched against discrete blocks of information rather than across the entire document. Examples A book that mentions Martin Stopford does not show up when searching Stopford as the author. An article that happens to reference an event that took place in 2010 is not necessarily retrieved when searching for material published in 2010

15 State of maritime information Summary: Compartmentalized in silos (disorganized, requires searching across too many different sites and different interfaces) Less than optimal indexing (Not easily searched on known values such as author, publication date, etc.) Unstandardized terminology (missed content, irrelevant content) Formatted for print (does not take advantage of tablets and e-readers) Poor pricing mechanism (little thought for academic and non-profit research users) Information Colonialism (Profits owners of the finished product, not the native population that does the heavy work of collecting the raw material)
