1 Syllabus Professor Natalia Milovantseva School of World Economy, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs National Research University Higher School of Economics Spring Course Description a. Title of a Course Digital economy and technology megatrends b. Pre-requisites Matriculation at master s program 'World Economy' c. Course Type Compulsory d. Abstract This is a blended course that overviews socio-economic implications of digital transformation of economy and rapid technological advancement. The nature of these changes will be examined in three integrated parts: development and scope of digital economy, contemporary and potential challenges arising from technological megatrends, and future opportunities and implications related to pertinent changes in the economy. The main feature of this course is that students will engage in digital economy itself, not just learn about it or discuss others participate in it. They will do so through (a) case studies and (b) developing either entrepreneurial or policy project. During the course, students will examine technology megatrends, including increasing datafication, the Internet of Things/Everything, technological advances due to growth of the computing power, abilities of artificial intelligence, 3D printing, robotization and automatization, blockchain-based technologies and business platforms. The technical aspects needed to understand the implications, opportunities, limitations and management issues related to the expansion of the digital economy will be covered. However, the course is not technically focused. The knowledge and skills gained in this course will contribute to students toolkit necessary for anticipating and shaping the impact of emerging technologies and for reacting quickly to changing circumstances in the evolving new global economy. 1

Learning Objectives To develop deep understanding of the scope, velocity and socio-economic implications of changes that are taking place in the world economy due to various facets of digital transformation and rapid technological advancement. 3. Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the course students will be able to: know the fundamentals of the digital economy, understand contemporary technological trends, be familiarized with the nature and extent of the connection between contemporary technological trends and global megatrends, discuss the likely global vectors of digital development and technological advancements in the future. 4.
