2 Technology Google Develops Human like Text-To-Speech AI System Google has developed a text-to-speech AI (AI) system that will confuse you with its human-like articulation. The tech giant's text-to-speech system called "Tacotron 2" delivers an AI-generated computer speech that almost matches with the voice of humans. According to a paper published in arxiv.org, the system first creates a spectrogram of the text, a visual representation of how the speech should sound. That image is put through Google's existing WaveNet algorithm, which uses the image and brings AI closer than ever to indiscernibly mimicking human speech. The algorithm can easily learn different voices and even generates artificial breaths. "Our model achieves a mean opinion score (MOS) of 4.53 comparable to a MOS of 4.58 for professionally recorded speech," the researchers were quoted as saying. Google claimed that "Tacotron 2" can detect the difference between the noun "desert" and the verb "desert," as well as the noun "present" and the verb "present," and alter its pronunciation on the basis of its context. 3 Finance Machine-Learning Programs to Decipher Corporate Earnings Announcements St. Louis-based Prattle, a hedge fund has until now focused on applying the artificial intelligence method known as natural-language processing to make assessments of Fed and other central bank policy statements. The hedge fund is now training sights on corporate earnings announcements. According to Evan Schnidman, at a time when analysis is poised to get its own price tag, with the introduction of Europe s MiFID II regulations, research costs are an increasing focus for investment banks and asset managers. Schnidman s play is that Prattle s services will offer a productivity boost and help generate trading calls more quickly. The report on the earnings call means that an analyst that s struggling to keep up with covering 10 or 12 companies can cover 30 or 50. Having started with the US during the most recent reporting season, Prattle aims to offer analysis for public companies listed in all of the world s major developed equity markets by this time next year. 4 Technology A Plug-In to Combat Biased & Fake News A team of college students has developed a browser extension that alerts users to fake and biased news stories and helps guide them to more balanced coverage. The extension is called Open Mind. It was developed during a 36- hour problem-solving competition known as a hackathon at Yale University. The team's software was designed as an extension for Google's Chrome browser. It will display a warning screen when someone enters a site known to disseminate fake news. It also will alert a reader if a story shared on social media is fake or biased. Plug-in uses existing sentiment analysis technology to analyze any story that might appear in a newsfeed, identifying the major players and any political slant. It then can suggest to the reader other stories on the same topic that have an alternate viewpoint. The extension collects browsing data as well and can show a user a graph that indicates whether they have been reading stories from just one side of a political spectrum. 5 Defense AI-Powered Network to Automate Tactical Information Processing for the US Navy United States Navy is reportedly expanding their ocean combat network, known as the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES), to seamlessly connect their ships, submarines, and on-shore locations using A). CANES hopes to reduce number of sailors required to maintain operations. This will eventually help Navy save billions of dollars over the coming years. The systems could also automate tactical information processing, such as threat and target information, thereby making the Navy s fleets safer and more formidable. The US Air Force is also incorporating AI into their intelligence-gathering systems through Project Maven, an initiative to employ machine learning to better utilize drone surveillance footage. AI and automation can reduce the manpower needed to run military operations. However, not everyone fully supports handing over control of military systems to AI. The United Nations is currently in the process of considering how the world should move forward in terms of its development and use of autonomous weapons systems. 6 Finance Dark Pool Operators are Increasingly Using Artificial Intelligence Dark pool operators are hiring teams of Artificial Intelligence (AI) experts and, in some cases, buying AI companies, to remain competitive in the face of rising competition from major brokers and global exchanges. AI allows asset managers to execute multiple large block trades simultaneously, without leaving ripples in the market place. According to Brad Bailey, an analyst at research firm Celent, a division of Oliver Wyman that studies financial technology applications globally, Machine learning is becoming a core part of how venues such as dark pools can rapidly access market conditions,. Dark pool operator Liquidnet s acquisition earlier this year of London-based decision analytics company OTAS Technologies is an example of how dark pools are making AI as part of their product offering, helping fund managers to access new resources when many sell-side vendors are cutting services due to budget and staff reductions. 7 Miscellaneous Machine Learning in the Gym For Smart Workouts A fresh startup made up of recent MIT student-athletes is developing a smart system that uses camera vision and machine learning in the gym to create connected workouts and aid athletic development. Perch, the new fittech outfit aims to track movements and exercises of athletes, such as weightlifting - something the startup says current fitness technology fails to address - and capture a complete picture of athlete movement. Data collected is then delivered to coaches and personal trainers. 8 Technology Open Neural Network Exchange Project Aims to Bring Interoperability among Deep Learning Frameworks AWS, Facebook and Microsoft have collaborated to build Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX), which reuse trained neural network models across multiple frameworks. Companies including AMD, ARM, IBM, Intel, Huawei, NVIDIA and Qualcomm have announced their support. One of the critical challenges lies in choosing the right framework. Data scientists and developers have to pick the right tool from a plethora of choices that include Caffe2, PyTorch, Apache MXNet, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit, and TensorFlow. Once a model is trained and evaluated in a specific framework, it is tough to port the trained model to another framework. This led to lack of interoperability among available deep learning frameworks. ONNX will provide a format through which fully trained deep learning models can be exported from one framework to another.
